Why this report?

Discussions with vendors and users of automation technologies about their needs for
information has shown that in addition to that valuable information available in our Market
Intelligence Reports about the markets and applications, some further future orientated
technological topics would be of interest.

The content selected for those topics is a direct result of many discussions with end users and
vendors of Machine Vision and vision based automation equipment.

The Market Intelligence Report (MIR) “Future Trends in Machine Vision” therefore is focused
on these topics, showing information on important trends collected from more than 90
companies, such as Bluebotics, Cognex, Comau, Dalsa, Edixia, Fatronik, HGV, LMI,
Motoman Robotics, MVTech, National Instruments, Sick; Tordivel, Universal Robotics
and many more, being active in Machine Vision, most of them with a strong expertise in
guidance and robot vision.

Introduction: „Future Trends in MV 2011“ Presentation

Real time detection and the integration of machine vision are the most important
machine vision topics for companies focused on robotics and automation in the near
future.
Almost 100 companies representing industries such as Agriculture & Forestry, Aerospace,
Automotive, Food & Packaging, Logistics, Medical Engineering, Military & Defense,
Photovoltaic, Security & Surveillance and Service Robotics reported back about their
expectation for the future potentials of several technical topics and applications and the most
pressing user requirements.

The topics addressed and explained within the report include technologies that are already
well known such as real time detection, integration and camera resolution but also new hot
topics like HDR (high dynamic range), computational cameras and cloud computing for
machine vision. To see how important those technologies already are for the industries and
which potential for business is to be expected is also one of the goals of the market
intelligence report as well as giving clear and understandable explanations for each of the
technology topics.

MIR: „Future Trends in Machine Vision 2011“ – Outlook
Machine Vision traditionally was focused on the industrial markets. Looking back to the 90´s
market leading vendors used this message in their naming such as “Cognex - Vision for
Industry”. In the last years the Machine Vision business changed. It is developing more and
more into other markets and applications outside the traditional industrial business.

At the same time technologies and trends from other industries, especially consumer
electronic markets influenced the Machine Vision business and helped to open new areas in
the traditional industrial markets.

In the moment we see the world become 3- dimensional – a trend that is pushed from several
directions: Machine Vision, industrial measurement and consumer markets such as gaming
and video entertainment as well. This is only one example showing how things come together,
influencing the whole business, changing markets and their vendors.

Therefore it is of high importance to monitor all these developments and changes in
technologies and markets. Market Intelligence Reports help you to keep track, be prepared
and stay on top of these changes and developments.

  • 4. www.amc-hofmann.com Why this report? Discussions with vendors and users of automation technologies about their needs for information has shown that in addition to that valuable information available in our Market Intelligence Reports about the markets and applications, some further future orientated technological topics would be of interest. The content selected for those topics is a direct result of many discussions with end users and vendors of Machine Vision and vision based automation equipment. The Market Intelligence Report (MIR) “Future Trends in Machine Vision” therefore is focused on these topics, showing information on important trends collected from more than 90 companies, such as Bluebotics, Cognex, Comau, Dalsa, Edixia, Fatronik, HGV, LMI, Motoman Robotics, MVTech, National Instruments, Sick; Tordivel, Universal Robotics and many more, being active in Machine Vision, most of them with a strong expertise in guidance and robot vision. 03.10.2011 ©AMC- Hofmann 2011 4
  • 5. www.amc-hofmann.com Introduction: „Future Trends in MV 2011“ Presentation Real time detection and the integration of machine vision are the most important machine vision topics for companies focused on robotics and automation in the near future. Almost 100 companies representing industries such as Agriculture & Forestry, Aerospace, Automotive, Food & Packaging, Logistics, Medical Engineering, Military & Defense, Photovoltaic, Security & Surveillance and Service Robotics reported back about their expectation for the future potentials of several technical topics and applications and the most pressing user requirements. The topics addressed and explained within the report include technologies that are already well known such as real time detection, integration and camera resolution but also new hot topics like HDR (high dynamic range), computational cameras and cloud computing for machine vision. To see how important those technologies already are for the industries and which potential for business is to be expected is also one of the goals of the market intelligence report as well as giving clear and understandable explanations for each of the technology topics. 03.10.2011 ©AMC- Hofmann 2011 5
