Google's recent announcement that it will support the use of microformats in their search opens up new possibilities for librarians and library technologists to support the goals of the semantic web; namely to provide better access, reuse and recombinations of library resources and services on the open web. This lightning talk introduces the semantic web and semantic markup technologies.

The Research Data Alliance (RDA) has developed a Catalogue of Metadata standards and tools aimed at researchers and those who support them. In its new version, the Metadata Standards Catalog will provide much greater detail about metadata standards and tools, and through its new API - it will be usable within other applications. It will also provide a platform for furthering the work of the RDA Metadata Interest Group, which is seeking to improve the interoperability of metadata in different standards by working towards semi-automatically generated converters.

Presented at DocTrain East 2007 by Joe Gelb, Suite Solutions -- Designing, building and maintaining a coherent information architecture is critical to proper planning, creation, management and delivery of documentation and training content. This is especially true when your content is based on a modular or topic-based model such as DITA and SCORM or if you are migrating to such a model. But where to start? Terms such as taxonomy, semantics, and ontology can be intimidating, and recognized standards like RDF, OWL, Topic Maps (XTM) and SKOS seem so abstract. This pragmatic workshop will provide an overview of the standards and concepts, and a chance to use them hands-on to turn the abstract into tangible skills. We will demonstrate how a well-designed information architecture facilitates reuse and how the information model is integrally connected to conditional and multi-purpose publishing. We will introduce an innovative, comprehensive methodology for information modeling and content development called SOTA Solution Oriented Topic Architecture. SOTA does not aim to be yet another new standard, but rather a concrete methodology backed up with open-source and accessible tools for using existing standards. We will demonstrate ֖and practice—hands-on—how this powerful methodology can help you organize and express information, determine which content actually needs to be created or updated, and build documentation and training deliverables from your content based on the rules you define. This workshop is essential for successfully implementing topic models like DITA and SCORM, multi-purpose conditional publishing, and successfully facilitating content reuse.

Workday is a leading provider of cloud-based enterprise software products such as Human Capital Management, Talent, Finance, Student, Planning etc. These products produce a wealth of natural language data. However, this data is unstructured and denormalized. Retrieving relevant information from such data is a challenging task. Using simple index-based search methods can only take us so far. The Data Science team at Workday is determined to apply Machine Learning and AI to make search better across Workday’s products. In this session, we present to you, how we use word embeddings to normalize the data and add structure to it. We will also talk about using word representations to make search intelligent. The specific use cases we will discuss are adding synonyms detection and entity-recommendation. In this talk, we will focus on the word-embeddings techniques explored, metrics used to evaluate Natural Language Processing Models, tools built, and future work as a part of improving search. With the enormous growth of data, retrieving information from the Web became more desirable and even more challenging because of the Big Data issues (e.g. noise, corruption, bad quality…etc.). Expert seeking, defined as returning a ranked list of expert researchers given a topic, has been a real concern in the last 15 years. This kind of task comes in handy when building scientific committees, requiring to identify the scholars’ experience to assign them the most suitable roles in addition to other factors as well. Due to the fact the Web is drowning with plenty of data, this opens up the opportunity to collect different kinds of expertise evidence. In this paper, we propose an expert seeking approach with specifying the most desirable features (i.e. criteria on which researcher’s evaluation is done) along with their estimation techniques. We utilized some machine learning techniques in our system and we aim at verifying the effectiveness of incorporating influential features that go beyond publications

Alive and kicking! Keeping data re-usable in the European Values Study Evelyn Brislinger, Astrid Recker GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences Repeated cross-national surveys generate huge amounts of cross-linked data and metadata. To enable replication and to make this data re-usable in new research contexts, thorough and standardized documentation of data and project workflow is indispensable. However, in the social sciences, data and documentation often undergo a continuous process of correction, refinement, and further development. These processes need to be documented too, especially to allow data providers to build on these results and experiences in preparation of the next wave. In this paper, we use the European Values Study (EVS) 1981-2008 to illustrate the challenges to be met in the active curation of extensive amounts of data and documentation created, altered, and re-used across the survey life-cycle. Outlining how these challenges are met by the EVS, we will particularly discuss the following questions: Looking beyond the “standard” documentation of data and survey methods, what supporting contextual information should accompany data to ensure their effective “migration” and use across waves? Especially relevant in a project composed of 125 national surveys covering 49 countries and spanning almost 30 years is the question which preservation metadata is needed to achieve this objective and thus support the long-term accessibility of data and contextual information?

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
