To prevent cyberbullying and ensure normal
psychological development of our students and
good relationship with their society.
MAIN OBJECTIVE
1.Educating parents about digital citizenship
concept, and the danger of cyberbullying.
2.Encouraging parents to discuss with their kids
about internet friends and chatting.
3.Enhance the communication, interaction and
collaboration between educators and parents
(home and school) to prevent such problems.

What is Digital Citizenship
• How to use technology in appropriate, and
responsible manners.
• Is the concept that helps us as teachers and
parents to learn what our students and kids
should know to be able to use technology
appropriately and responsibly. Consequently, we
can prepare them for community full of
technology.

• The rate of technology using by young people is
increasing.
• According to the Pew Internet American Life
Project 93 % of children and teenagers are
online,
• 75 % of them have their own cell phones.
• 73 % are using MySpace or Facebook.

Digital Health & Wellness
• Is to protect students and kids from
physical and psychological hazards
related to technology use.
• Unsafe use of technology is
associated to physical and
psychological issues:
• Physical issues: Eyes related issues,
sound ergonomic practices and
repetitive stress syndrome.
• Psychological issues as cyberbullying
and internet addiction.
Definition: using communication technology
tools (as cell phones and Internet) to bother
another person and make him/her feeling angry,
scared, or sad usually in repetitive way.
It can be in different forms, including spreading
made up rumors online or through cell phones,
sending bad texts, messages, and posting photos or
video on social media.
CYBERBULLYING
According Michele Ybarra
Bully: defined as “ongoing, repetitive peer aggression or
victimization that is marked by a power differential between
bully and victim”
Harassment:  ”mean and rude comments,
threatening and aggressive behaviors, spreading
rumors and other annoying or hurtful behaviors.”
17 % of the teens being bullied, were bullied
online.

• The prevalence of cyberbullying ranges
approximately from 10 to 40 percent students.
• 36% of 12-17 years old students had been
cyberbullied.
• 17% of 6- 11 years old students had been
cyberbullied.

Impact of Cyberbullying 
Children that have been harassed and bullied online
are more likely to:
•be bullied on person
•have more depression
•suicidal thoughts
•alcohol abuse
•social issues
•poor relations with caregiver.

Internet usage evaluation form :
•Each child will be given an internet usage evaluation
form, together with his/her homework. Their parent
has to fill and sign this paper in daily basis.
• The paper includes number of hours the child spent
on computer and internet, type of internet usage
[checklist includes social networking sites, games
information gathering, or others (please specify)]
• This will help parents to discuss with their
children about their internet usage and give
parents idea if there is possibility of
cyberbullying, and take early actions to prevent
it.
• Collaboration and continuous communication
between home and school, making sure kids are
using technology in a safe way.

Preventing Cyberbullying Through Digital Citizenship Education

  • 2. To prevent cyberbullying and ensure normal psychological development of our students and good relationship with their society. MAIN OBJECTIVE
  • 3. 1.Educating parents about digital citizenship concept, and the danger of cyberbullying. 2.Encouraging parents to discuss with their kids about internet friends and chatting. 3.Enhance the communication, interaction and collaboration between educators and parents (home and school) to prevent such problems. What is Digital Citizenship • How to use technology in appropriate, and responsible manners. • Is the concept that helps us as teachers and parents to learn what our students and kids should know to be able to use technology appropriately and responsibly. It is an important issue! • The rate of technology using by young people is increasing. • According to the Pew Internet American Life Project 93 % of children and teenagers are online, • 75 % of them have their own cell phones. • 73 % are using MySpace or Facebook. http://www.apa.org/monitor/2011/10/technology.aspx

Digital Health & Wellness • Is to protect students and kids from physical and psychological hazards related to technology use. • Unsafe use of technology is associated to physical and psychological issues: • Physical issues: Eyes related issues, sound ergonomic practices and repetitive stress syndrome. • Psychological issues as cyberbullying and internet addiction.
  • 7. Definition: using communication technology tools (as cell phones and Internet) to bother another person and make him/her feeling angry, scared, or sad usually in repetitive way. It can be in different forms, including spreading made up rumors online or through cell phones, sending bad texts, messages, and posting photos or video on social media. CYBERBULLYING
  • 8. According Michele Ybarra Bully: defined as “ongoing, repetitive peer aggression or victimization that is marked by a power differential between bully and victim” Harassment:  ”mean and rude comments, threatening and aggressive behaviors, spreading rumors and other annoying or hurtful behaviors.” 17 % of the teens being bullied, were bullied online. http://www.apa.org/monitor/2011/10/technology.aspx
  • 9. • The prevalence of cyberbullying ranges approximately from 10 to 40 percent students. • 36% of 12-17 years old students had been cyberbullied. • 17% of 6- 11 years old students had been cyberbullied. (Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, 2006).
  • 10. Impact of Cyberbullying  Children that have been harassed and bullied online are more likely to: •be bullied on person •have more depression •suicidal thoughts •alcohol abuse •social issues •poor relations with caregiver.

  • 13. Internet usage evaluation form : •Each child will be given an internet usage evaluation form, together with his/her homework. Their parent has to fill and sign this paper in daily basis. • The paper includes number of hours the child spent on computer and internet, type of internet usage [checklist includes social networking sites, games information gathering, or others (please specify)]
  • 14. • This will help parents to discuss with their children about their internet usage and give parents idea if there is possibility of cyberbullying, and take early actions to prevent it. • Collaboration and continuous communication between home and school, making sure kids are using technology in a safe way.
