This activity has been accomplished by the
4th ESO bilingual section students
3. Activity objetive: Understanding the concept of survey in all the
stages:
•

•
Design.
Data collection.
Processing and presentation of statistical results.
This activity will also promote teamwork and the use of IT
tools (Excel , power point )
4. Day 1 : Designing the survey
• Students are introduced to the activity : they have to desing a survey to poll their school mates about different
questions, the respondents will be the 3rd and 4th of ESO (stundents betweent 14 and 15 years old)
• We group the students in teams of 2 or 3 students .
• Designing the survey. We establish three thematic sections on the board.
Block 1 : Personal household, habits,h ousekeeping.
Block 2: Work and leisure habits . ( sports , TV , computer, playstation, hours study, reading, Social Networking ... )
Block 3 : alcohol, tobacco , sexuality.
We share the teams in the three blocks,
giving them 10 minutes to write in their assigned
block issues with this premises:
Questions should be simple and clear ,
with CLOSED answers which should collect
all possible opinions .
It Is the moment to discuss the students proponsals,
first we appoint a secretary who will remain on
the board writing the conclusions
First couple of block 1 will tell us their issues after having checked all
of them we select the best ones and it´s turn for the nex team which
should provide only new issues.
Once we have a selection of 4 aproved issues we proceed
with blocks 2 and 3 ina similar way.
5. Day 2 : Preparing the Data collecting day
The group itself fill the pilot survey to assess the time spent and failures that could have been
encountered.
It Is the moment to prepare the logistic for the data collection day, groups asignements and define the
acting protocol:
Activity: Students should think and write about how they thik it should be done. We discuss and conclude a
plan.
THE BRIEFING: What information to be given to respondents and how to give it, our goal here is to inform
respondents about what we pretend with the survey and the importance of the sincerity in their answers:
• Surveys are completely anonymous .
•Interviewers will collect surveys ( that way we will discriminate male and female) .
6. Day 3 : Data collecting day
Pollsters uploaded on stage will
give
a
brief
collection
of
instructions to respondents :
Given the nature of some of the
questions, during the fullfilling time the
pollsters must avoid intimidating students
respondents keeping a distance.
7. Day 4 and 5 : Data procesing day
In the computer lab students continue performing the data counting and
procesing (excel sheet designed for this purpose) to obtain the results.
