Precipitations can be rain, snow, or hail. Precipitation is measured with a rain gauge. On the Earth, we find humid zones, where it rains a lot, semi-humid zones, where it rains some, dry zones, where it rains very little, and desert zones, where it hardly rains at all. 2) Temperature is the measure of how much heat is in the air. Temperature is measured with a thermometer. The temperature depends on how much sun a zone receives. ACTIVITIES 1) Relate and match. Climates and their geographic locations On Earth, there are three big climate zones: cold climates, temperate climates, and hot climates. In these climate zones we find other climates. 3.1 Hot climates The Equatorial Climate: The Equatorial climate has very high temperatures all year. In the Equatorial climate it rains all year. Rivers in the Equatorial climate carry a lot of water. There are rainforests in the Equatorial climate. Animals in the Equatorial climate are animals that can fly or climb. For example, birds, monkeys, reptiles, and insects. The Tropical Climate The Tropical climate has a wet season and a dry season. It rains a lot during the wet season. It hardly rains during the dry season. In the Tropical climate, it is hot. In the Tropical climate, the amount of water in the rivers depends on the season. The savannah is found in the Tropical climate. The savannah has tall grass. Examples of animals in the Tropical climate are: lions, hyenas, zebras, and giraffes. The Tropical Desert climate In the Tropical Desert climate, it rains very little. In the Tropical Desert climate it is very hot during the day and cool at night. The rivers are dry in the Tropical Desert climate. There are not many plants in the desert. In the Tropical desert, the plants are found in the oasis. Examples of animals in the Tropical desert climate are vipers, rodents, and birds. ACTIVITIES 1) Write T (true) or F (false). There are very few trees or grasses in the Equatorial climate. It rains all year in the desert. The savannah is found in the Tropical climate. In the desert, it is hot during the day and cool at night. In the Equatorial climate, the rivers carry much water. We find plants in the oasis. 3.2 The Temperate climates The Mediterranean Climate In the Mediterranean climate the winters are mild and the summers are hot and dry. In the Mediterranean climate it rains in the spring and autumn. Rivers in the Mediterranean climate are short. The vegetation in the Mediterranean climate is the Mediterranean forest. Examples of plants are pine trees, mosses, and aromatic plants. Animals in the Mediterranean forest are: wild boars, wolves, lynxes, foxes, etc. The Oceanic Climate In the Oceanic Climate, it is cloudy and it rains most of the year. In the Oceanic climate, the temperatures are mild. The rivers carry a lot of water in the Oceanic climate. Vegetation in the Oceanic climate: oak trees, chestnut trees, etc. Examples of animals in the Oceanic climate: bears, wolves, deer, etc. The Continental Climate In the Continental climate, winters are long and cold. Summers are not hot in the Continental climate. In the Continental climate, it rains in the summer and it snows in the winter. Rivers in the Continental climate are very long. The vegetation in the Continental climate is varied. Examples of plants are: evergreen (pine) trees, fir trees, and birch trees. Meadows or grasslands are found in the Continental climate. Examples of animals in the Continental climate are: deer, bears, wolves, reindeer, and birds. 3.3 Cold Climates In cold climates, there are two zones. One zone is the Polar Zone. The Polar Zone is found in two places, in the north and south of the Earth. The second zone is the high mountain zone. The high mountain zone is found at the peaks, or tops, of mountains. The Polar Climate In the Polar climate it is very cold. In the Polar climate there is little precipitation. The only precipitation is snow. The tundra is found in the Polar climate. Examples of plants are mosses and lichen. Examples of animals are reindeer, wolves, foxes, polar bears, penguins, and birds.
