WHAT IS A LEARNING DISABILITY


Definition- a neurologically based difficulty in the
achievement in academic abilities.
  Can effect-
     Basic skills- math, reading, etc.
     Higher level thinking- organization and time
     management
4 to 6 percent of all students have a learning disability.

  Pros- higher academic achievement, higher self-

  Cons- are LD students getting enough attention?
  Does that take attention away from other students?

  • 2. WHAT IS A LEARNING DISABILITY Definition- a neurologically based difficulty in the achievement in academic abilities. Can effect- Basic skills- math, reading, etc. Higher level thinking- organization and time management 4 to 6 percent of all students have a learning disability.
  • 3. FOUR TYPES Input Integration I Memory Output
  • 4. EXPECTATIONS AND SUCCESS Intelligence Potential vs. Ability All disabilities are different To encourage success focus on Individual achievements Individual progress Individual learning styles
  • 5. TREATMENTS Medication Do benefits outweigh the risks? Affects children differently than adults. Cognative Behavior Therapy Behavioral Training for Parents
  • 6. TREATMENTS Diet ADHD- avoid soda, sweets, quash, and natural orange juice Dyslexia- try sugar free diet. The law requires schools to develop individual education plans for all children with learning disabilities.
  • 7. AFFECTS AND OUTCOMES Learning disabilities can affect Mental abilites How they learn How they view themselves How they interact with peers
  • 8. MAINSTREAMING Mainstreaming- placing learning disabled students in “regular” classrooms throughout the day Pros- higher academic achievement, higher self- esteem, and better social skills. Cons- are LD students getting enough attention? Does that take attention away from other students?
  • 9. INCLUSION Types of Inclusion Regular Partial Full Goal- to take all necessary actions to accomidate students with a learning disability in a “regular” classroom
