    DSR-1600

    DSR-1800
Product Concept
Since the launch of DVCAM in 1996, DSR-80P Editing Recorder and DSR-60P Editing
Player have been playing active roles in a variety of video production fields, such as
production houses, corporate, educational facilities etc.
One of the impressive phenomena for the DVCAM is that excellences of this format as
well as the equipment is highly recognized and appreciated not only at B&I markets
which was an original target for the DVCAM but also at ENG fields that requires more
professional better quality e.g. picture & sound, durability under harsh conditions and
reliable editing performances. Of course, this much owes to its popularity of consumer
DV camcorders and PNC’s compact DVCAM equipment. It’s also true that the well-
acceptance of the DVCAM in wider fields has been brought out by DSR-2000P with its
high-standards of performances.

For the DSR-80P and the DSR-60P, along with their gradual penetration into the
markets, they’ve been receiving reports on defects or opinions from users especially
familiar with operation of analog Betacam SP, which should be considered to improve
or newly implement.
Performances of jog audio, slow motion, process delay between input and output have
been major complaints. Requests for i.LINK operation have been also increasing due to
its popularity as a convenient interface in Non-linear editing environment or a system
with consumer DV equipment.

Therefore, reflecting these demands and employing higher-standards of technologies
and experiences in the DSR-2000P, we will innovate the DSR-80P and the DSR-60P by
introducing new line-ups, DSR-1800P and DSR-1600P as their successor models.
The DSR-1800P and the DSR-1600P boast not only improvements of the above
functions but also an excellent search dial and DVCPRO playback. More compact unit
size and lower power consumption also complement efficiency of a system operation.
Furthermore, in order to make them more competitive enough in price-competition with
which DVCPRO often comes up, especially the price of the DSR-1800P is set almost
the same as the DSR-80P in spite of having better features.
With all these excellences and innovations available, the DSR-1800P and the DSR-
1600P will be major workforces in video production fields by satisfying those highly
professionals.

Main Features
1. DVCAM Format

    l Digital Component Recording Format
    l 4CH/2CH PCM Audio
    l Maximum 3 hours Recording

2. Playback Capability with DV Family Formats

The DSR-1800P/DSR-1600P has an excellent playback compatibility with DV family
formats (25Mbps) except DV-LP recorded tapes to offer flexibility in accepting video
sources in various types of video editing environment.
The ‘DV family formats’*1 include not only DVCAM and DV but also DVCPRO*2
format. Tapes of these formats can be played back in the DSR-1800P/1600 without any
special mechanical adaptor. Also there is no need for menu changes in choosing the
formats. They can be directly inserted, played back and also utilized as editing sources.
The editing functions such as Digital slow motion, jog audio and DMC are available
regardless of the tape formats. This means even when using the DV or DVCPRO recorded
tapes as editing sources, there is no need to dub up to other higher format, which is often
        required on DVCPRO VTR.
*1: Unlike the DSR-2000P, the DSR-1800P/1600 does not accept the DV-LP-recorded tape since they do
not employ narrow-pitch heads for the DV-LP playback. The DSR-1800P/1600 playbacks thin-type
        consumer DV tapes (SP mode).
*2: DVCPRO output is not available with SDTI (QSDI) and i.LINK due to differences in construction of
AUX data. For PAL area, the difference in video sampling also contributes to this inability.
Playback compatibility in DSR-1800P and DSR-1600P

                                                            Consumer DV (Mini)

                                                            Consumer DV (Std)

     DSR-1800 DVCAM (Mini)

                                                            DVCAM (Std)

                                                            DVCPRO (Std)
     DSR-1600
                                                            DVCPRO (Large)

3. Excellent Editing Functions

    l Responsive Jog/Shuttle Dial
The DSR-1800P/1600 incorporates a built-in Jog/Shuttle dial in its front panel, which
enables highly responsive operation giving a great convenience in searching desired editing
        points.

                                * Search dial with ergonomic design

        * Notice 1: No VTR-to-VTR editing is possible with DSR-1800P/1600 due to no editing functions in its
        front panel.
        * Notice 2: Front panel is neither detachable nor tiltable.

l Wider range of Digital Slow Motion
The DSR-1800P/1600 boasts a wider digital noiseless slow range from –0.5 to +0.5 times
normal playback speed, in increments of 1%, making it easy to designate editing points.
This range is effective for all DV formats (25Mbps) that are acceptable on the DSR-
        1800P/1600.
l Noiseless and Clear Digital Jog Sound
The DSR-1800P/1600 offers excellently smooth and clear performance of jog sound within
the provided range of –0.5 to +0.5 times normal playback speed, just like we have
experienced in analog VTR. This allows easier decision of editing points listening to the
audible jog sound. This will be of a great weapon to appeal to ENG markets that often
relies on jog audio in news editing application. This excellence is effective for all DV
family formats (25Mbps) the DSR-1800P/1600 accepts.

l Superb Audio Editing Functions
    Ø Audio Cross-fade editing
The DSR-1800P employs the Audio Cross-fade mode to achieve clear transition of
        audio at the editing points.

                                                                       DVCPRO
                             DVCAM
                                                                                 In Out
                             In Editing Mode
                                       Pre-recorded audio Fade out

                                                                                       +

l Frame accurate editing via RS-422A or i.LINK
The DSR-1800P/1600 is equipped with an RS-422A remote control interface (9-pin) to
interface with Sony EditStations, Sony VTR and editing controllers. Equipped with an
    optional DSBK-1803 i.LINK/DV Input/Output Board, i.LINK-based control is also
available. Frame accurate editing is possible in both cases.

l Achievement of No Input/Output Delay enables Outstanding Audio Editing
Ø Perfect Voice-over with No frame delay
Some frames-delay between video and audio in the voice-over has been annoyance in
conventional DV-based VTR, including DVCPRO machines and DSR series except DSR-
2000P. However, due to employment of the newly–developed digital processing and pre-
read technology that have been also applied to the DSR-2000P, the DSR-1800P has
realized the excellent voice-over functions with perfect matching of video and audio in
over-dubbing of audio without any frame delay.

               Microphone Recorder
                                           Play w/Pre-read head

                                              Output from CH2

                                               Input to CH4

                                                                CH1: Source 1
                                                                CH2: Source 2
                        Narration CH3: Source 3
                                                                CH4: Narration + Source 2
Ø Simultaneous Channel Mixing during Input Recording
The DSR-1800P is capable of mixing of pre-recorded audio channels into a vacant channel
while doing voice-over or receiving input audio signals. For example (See a diagram
below), if you are making a recording of input sources from Player or other audio
equipment, onto Channel 1 on a tape that has already recordings on Channel 3 and
Channel 4, leaving Channel 2 vacant, you can make a recording of mixing sounds of the
Channel 3 and 4 onto the Channel 2 simultaneously.

              * Audio Mix
              Player Recorder
                       or
DAT, CD, Microphone… Input Play w/Pre-read head

l Instant Start at Designated Editing Point
The DSR-1800P/1600 boasts immediate and precise start-up when changing operational
modes especially from STILL to PLAY modes. This conveniently allow users those who
especially engaged in ENG environment and want to skip a process of PREIEW to save
even a bit of time, to check the designated IN or OUT edit points.

l DMC (Dynamic Motion Control) via External controller
Being controlled by an external editing controller, the DSR-1800P/1600 provides noiseless
slow-motion pictures within the range of –0.5 to +0.5 time normal speed.
Note: The DMC is not available through i.LINK and SDTI (QSDI) since minute speed
control is impossible via these interfaces.

l ClipLink
The DSR-1800P/1600 supports the ClipLink operation. Being integrated in a NLE system
with EditStations, the DSR-1800P/1600 plays an active role by sending the ClipLink
information data onto the EditStations to provide great efficiency through the whole
    editing process.
Also, the DSR-1800P has a capability of full tape dubbing with ClipLink Log Data either
through i.LINK or a combination of SDTI (QSDI) + RS-422A.
Note: ClipLink data is not alterable.
4. Improvement in Picture Quality

l SDI Multi-generation dubbing quality (PAL only)
Due to employment of newly developed algorithm filter, color blurring that has been
annoying in SDI dubbing with a predecessor model of DSR-80P is extremely reduced in
        the DSR-1800P.

l Reduction of Mosaic noises in Panning pictures
By improving DCT motion detector, the DSR-1800P/1600 offers great improvement in
picture quality especially in viewing panning pictures.
For example, when watching the panning pictures, tiny compression mosaic noises are
extremely reduced to the level that is almost invisible.
This excellence of picture quality is very remarkable so that you will see a big difference at
a glance even in the first generation of pictures in comparing with that of DVCPRO
machines. It is more striking when you compare them with multi-generation pictures.

l Picture quality in Slow motion
Employing the same Y-Add filter as the one that has been used in Digital Betacam or
Betacam SX VTR, the DSR-1800P/1600 offers smooth digital slow motion picture by
greatly reducing vertical vibration. The difference of picture stability between DSR-
1800P/DSR-1600P and DVCPRO is also apparent especially comparing in the range of
less than 0.5 times normal speed.

5. Other Conveniences

    l 16:9 Aspect Ratio
The DSR-1800P/1600 has capability of recording and playing back the 16:9 aspect ratio
        pictures shot by DXC-D35WS + DSR-1, DSR-500WS or DSR-200A by receiving a wide
aspect ID pulse signal as video auxiliary data which indicates the picture is shot in the 16:9
        aspect ratio.

l VITC (Vertical Interval Time Code)
The DSR-1800P/1600 supports not only Time Code in sub code area on a tape but also
Vertical Interval Time Code (VITC) through all video signal interfaces.
When receiving video signal with the VITC, the DSR-1800P reads and records (DSR-
1800P only) it in video auxiliary data area. The VITC is output by being inserted on video
signal. Also, the Time Code in sub code area can be output as the VITC.
The VITC facilitates cable-handling enabling copying video signal and TC (Time Code or
VITC) with just a single BNC cable via composite or SDI, or allows users to record other
time code data in video auxiliary data area in addition to the Time Code, which is helpful
        especially for off-line editing.

    l Video Control (Process Control)
The DSR-1800P/1600 is equipped with a built-in Video Controller for the output of highly
stable analog and digital video signals, which is available by menu operation.
With the Video Control, Video level, Chroma level, Chroma phase (hue)*, Y/C delay, Sync
phase, SC phase and Set up (black) for composite, S-video, component and SDI outputs
can be controlled. Equipped with a Video Control port (15-pin) in a rear panel, the video
control can be also adjusted from an external TBC remote controller.
*: Following precedent Betacam SX and Digital Betacam VTR, there is a difference in the
        function name between UC/J and CE models as follows;
UC and J models: Chroma phase (hue)
                   CE model: Chroma phase
l Universal Powering System
The DSR-1800P/1600 employs the universal powering system to handle AC 100V to
240V. This system allows users to bring and use the DSR-1800P/1600 anywhere around
    the world without a transformer*.
    * Please note that the safety regulations of the DSR-1800P/1600 are taken per model (UC
    7, CED, J).

l Flexible Input/Output Selection
The DSR-1800P/1600 has flexibility in input (DSR-1800P only) and output selection,
which enables various combinations of video and audio inputs (DSR-1800P only) and
    outputs.
    However, there are limitations in the following cases;
        i. LINK: No combination with other I/F
SDTI (QSDI) for Audio: When SDTI (QSDI) is selected for audio, video
signal is determined to be SDTI (QSDI). However, when SDTI (QSDI) is chosen for
video, other I/F can be chosen for audio.

                                                                            XLR

l Channel Condition Monitoring
For ensuring reliable editing condition, the DSR-1800P/1600 is equipped with the channel
condition monitoring function representing a particular error rate threshold level with
    three-color (G/Y/R) indicator.
This is effective for all DV formats (25Mbps) that the DSR-1800P/1600 handles.
    Meanings of each color are as follows;
Green: Allowed to continue the reliable operation. Errors are corrected perfectly.
Yellow: Need to check the VTR and requested appropriate management. The status of
the error correction is in-between Green and Red.
Red: Now allowed to continue the reliable operation. Errors are not corrected and
               concealment is not effective.

l Internal Signal Generator
The DSR-1800P/1600 incorporates an internal signal generator. The indicator generates
Color bar (Full-field/NTSC: 75% color bar, PAL: 100% color bar) or Black burst for video
and 1kHz or No sound for audio. This function is convenient for making a pre-striped tape
    before editing.

l Character Generator
The DSR-1800P/1600 has a built-in character generator, which superimposes characters o
the video signal output from the VIDEO OUT 2 terminal. Time code data (TC, User bit),
VTR operation status, menu items and all alarm, warning and error messages can be
    shown in a monitor display.
l Auto Repeat
The DSR-1800P/1600 has the Auto repeat function that is the first adoption among Sony
         recorders.

Ø What’s disappeared from DSR-80P/60
            - RGB
            - SDTI (QSDI) and AES/EBU are not standard anymore which used to be
                a standard I/F on DSR-80P

Ø Most recommendable applications
² Editor & Feeder in Linear Editing system
       DSR-2000P: Good, but expensive
       DSR-1800P/1600: Best!
DSR-1500: Good, but inconveniences: frame delay in voice-over, no
                         independent audio editing

² Editor & Feeder in Non-Linear Editing system
        DSR-2000P: Good, but too expensive
        DSR-1800P/1600: Better
        DSR-1500: Best!

    ² VTR-to-VTR editing
        DSR-2000P: Best!
        DSR-1800P/1600: NG. Needs external controller.
        DSR-1500: NG. Needs external controller.

    ² Players in Cart machine
        DSR-2000P: Good, but too much
        DSR-1800P/1600: Best! (DSR-1600P)
        DSR-1500: NG

² Source receiver with search dial in Feed-room at BC stations
        DSR-2000P: Best!
        DSR-1800P/1600: Best!
DSR-1500: Good, but needs optional search dial for more convenience
² Source viewer/feeder with search dial in BC station
DSR-2000P: Good, though needs bigger space, too expensive. But better
                            since DV-LP is available
DSR-1800P/1600: Better, though DV-LP is not available. Smaller and lower
                            cost than DSR-2000P
DSR-1500: Best! Though DV-LP is not available

Dsr1600 1800

  • 1. DVCAM Editing Player/Recorder DSR-1600P / DSR-1800P Datum: 11/2000 Ref.- Nr: 2378 Contents l Product Concept l Sales points l Main Features l Specifications l Dimensions l Appendix - Comparison chart for DSR-1800P vs. DSR-80P vs. AJ-D450P - Improvement on predecessor models - Settings on Editing control units DSR-1600 DSR-1800
  • 2. Product Concept Since the launch of DVCAM in 1996, DSR-80P Editing Recorder and DSR-60P Editing Player have been playing active roles in a variety of video production fields, such as production houses, corporate, educational facilities etc. One of the impressive phenomena for the DVCAM is that excellences of this format as well as the equipment is highly recognized and appreciated not only at B&I markets which was an original target for the DVCAM but also at ENG fields that requires more professional better quality e.g. picture & sound, durability under harsh conditions and reliable editing performances. Of course, this much owes to its popularity of consumer DV camcorders and PNC’s compact DVCAM equipment. It’s also true that the well- acceptance of the DVCAM in wider fields has been brought out by DSR-2000P with its high-standards of performances. For the DSR-80P and the DSR-60P, along with their gradual penetration into the markets, they’ve been receiving reports on defects or opinions from users especially familiar with operation of analog Betacam SP, which should be considered to improve or newly implement. Performances of jog audio, slow motion, process delay between input and output have been major complaints. Requests for i.LINK operation have been also increasing due to its popularity as a convenient interface in Non-linear editing environment or a system with consumer DV equipment. Therefore, reflecting these demands and employing higher-standards of technologies and experiences in the DSR-2000P, we will innovate the DSR-80P and the DSR-60P by introducing new line-ups, DSR-1800P and DSR-1600P as their successor models. The DSR-1800P and the DSR-1600P boast not only improvements of the above functions but also an excellent search dial and DVCPRO playback. More compact unit size and lower power consumption also complement efficiency of a system operation. Furthermore, in order to make them more competitive enough in price-competition with which DVCPRO often comes up, especially the price of the DSR-1800P is set almost the same as the DSR-80P in spite of having better features. With all these excellences and innovations available, the DSR-1800P and the DSR- 1600P will be major workforces in video production fields by satisfying those highly professionals.
  • 3. Sales Points 1. Three-positioning cassette compartment 2. Improvements in compactness, light-weight, power-consumption Main Features 1. DVCAM Format l Digital Component Recording Format l 4CH/2CH PCM Audio l Maximum 3 hours Recording 2. Playback Capability with DV Family Formats The DSR-1800P/DSR-1600P has an excellent playback compatibility with DV family formats (25Mbps) except DV-LP recorded tapes to offer flexibility in accepting video sources in various types of video editing environment. The ‘DV family formats’*1 include not only DVCAM and DV but also DVCPRO*2 format. Tapes of these formats can be played back in the DSR-1800P/1600 without any special mechanical adaptor. Also there is no need for menu changes in choosing the formats. They can be directly inserted, played back and also utilized as editing sources. The editing functions such as Digital slow motion, jog audio and DMC are available regardless of the tape formats. This means even when using the DV or DVCPRO recorded tapes as editing sources, there is no need to dub up to other higher format, which is often required on DVCPRO VTR. *1: Unlike the DSR-2000P, the DSR-1800P/1600 does not accept the DV-LP-recorded tape since they do not employ narrow-pitch heads for the DV-LP playback. The DSR-1800P/1600 playbacks thin-type consumer DV tapes (SP mode). *2: DVCPRO output is not available with SDTI (QSDI) and i.LINK due to differences in construction of AUX data. For PAL area, the difference in video sampling also contributes to this inability.

  • 9. 4. Improvement in Picture Quality l SDI Multi-generation dubbing quality (PAL only) Due to employment of newly developed algorithm filter, color blurring that has been annoying in SDI dubbing with a predecessor model of DSR-80P is extremely reduced in the DSR-1800P. l Reduction of Mosaic noises in Panning pictures By improving DCT motion detector, the DSR-1800P/1600 offers great improvement in picture quality especially in viewing panning pictures. For example, when watching the panning pictures, tiny compression mosaic noises are extremely reduced to the level that is almost invisible. This excellence of picture quality is very remarkable so that you will see a big difference at a glance even in the first generation of pictures in comparing with that of DVCPRO machines. It is more striking when you compare them with multi-generation pictures. l Picture quality in Slow motion Employing the same Y-Add filter as the one that has been used in Digital Betacam or Betacam SX VTR, the DSR-1800P/1600 offers smooth digital slow motion picture by greatly reducing vertical vibration. The difference of picture stability between DSR- 1800P/DSR-1600P and DVCPRO is also apparent especially comparing in the range of less than 0.5 times normal speed. 5. Other Conveniences l 16:9 Aspect Ratio The DSR-1800P/1600 has capability of recording and playing back the 16:9 aspect ratio pictures shot by DXC-D35WS + DSR-1, DSR-500WS or DSR-200A by receiving a wide aspect ID pulse signal as video auxiliary data which indicates the picture is shot in the 16:9 aspect ratio. l VITC (Vertical Interval Time Code) The DSR-1800P/1600 supports not only Time Code in sub code area on a tape but also Vertical Interval Time Code (VITC) through all video signal interfaces. When receiving video signal with the VITC, the DSR-1800P reads and records (DSR- 1800P only) it in video auxiliary data area. The VITC is output by being inserted on video signal. Also, the Time Code in sub code area can be output as the VITC. The VITC facilitates cable-handling enabling copying video signal and TC (Time Code or VITC) with just a single BNC cable via composite or SDI, or allows users to record other time code data in video auxiliary data area in addition to the Time Code, which is helpful especially for off-line editing. l Video Control (Process Control) The DSR-1800P/1600 is equipped with a built-in Video Controller for the output of highly stable analog and digital video signals, which is available by menu operation. With the Video Control, Video level, Chroma level, Chroma phase (hue)*, Y/C delay, Sync phase, SC phase and Set up (black) for composite, S-video, component and SDI outputs can be controlled. Equipped with a Video Control port (15-pin) in a rear panel, the video control can be also adjusted from an external TBC remote controller. *: Following precedent Betacam SX and Digital Betacam VTR, there is a difference in the function name between UC/J and CE models as follows; UC and J models: Chroma phase (hue) CE model: Chroma phase
