· Visual Analysis Essay Guidelines for Visual Analysis Essay Assignment Overview Your next major essay in this course will be a visual analysis essay. In this essay, you will be expected to apply the concepts covered in Units 1-4 as you analyze an image to show some of its larger meanings. This includes knowledge of the writing process, rhetorical situation, formal register, essay structure, and visual analysis. This essay also requires you to cite at least one credible source. Due Dates Refer to the assignment calendar for due dates. Remember, peer reviews are graded separately and have their own due dates in the assignment calendar. Purpose and Learning Objectives In this assignment, you should practice analyzing visual texts, using the writing process, and developing a well-constructed essay in formal register. The essay should show how an analysis of the visual components of an image leads to a better understanding of the image. Process for Completion 1. The first step in this process will be to choose an image. Browse the images available through the Gordon Parks Foundation Archives. The link is available near the end of Unit 3. Choose an image that you find engaging and that you feel offers ample opportunity for analysis. Some images are interesting, but they’re difficult to talk about. The image you choose will be the subject of your essay. 2. After you have chosen your image, you should engage in some prewriting activities using the ideas and terms presented in Unit 4. First, take stock of your initial reactions to the image. What emotions did you feel as you first looked at the photograph? What aspects about the image lead viewers to react a certain way? 3. Before you begin writing, you will want to perform some research. This assignment requires at least one source (print or web). If you're choosing an image about the Civil Rights Movement, you might want to research the movement. If you're choosing an image about Flavio in Rio de Janeiro, you might want to research how Gordon Parks met Flavio. You're welcome to use more than one source, but be sure to keep track of the information you gain from your source so that you can cite the source appropriately. 4. Next, analyze the image by looking closely at the content, framing, composition, focus, color, lighting and context. What interesting or unique features do you notice about the image? What is the cultural or historical context of the image? You should record all of these activities. Some of them will become important pieces of your final draft. 5. Next, it will be time to find your focus and begin generating a working thesis statement. For this assignment, your thesis will make a claim about the meaning of the image. In other words, what message does the image communicate? Remember, every image tells a story and an image may tell a different story depending on who is looking. Once you have decided what idea or story the image communicates to you, you will need .

Abakporo Hi Rowland! Your current draft is off a start, but there is more work to be done. Your essay should include detailed comparisons about who, what, when, where, why, how and what kind in regard to the two NASA missions you discuss. I know that revisions can be difficult and frustrating at times, but I think that you will be on your way to an effective essay by making revisions based on my suggestions as well as your professor’s instructions. You will get better as you gain more practice, so be sure to keep up the good work, Rowland! My review is below: INTRODUCTION/THESIS: Rowland, be sure that you create a thesis that contains a clear comparative argument, preferably with details of the points of comparison of the two missions you discuss in your essay. The grounds for comparison should determine the comparative nature of your thesis, and the thesis depends on how the two topics you've chosen to compare and contrast actually relate to one another. Be sure to review your professor’s instructions, check out the link in the section below, and pay close attention to the “Your Thesis” section. CONTENT DEVELOPMENT: Rowland, you can develop effective unity of your essay by developing more effective topic sentences that directly connect to and support your overall thesis, once you revise it. You can also develop an efficient flow of your essay by structuring your body paragraphs to better analyze the specific points of comparison and contrast you discuss. I provide you with a comparison/contrast outline handout to help you create effective topic sentences and to help you to further develop your thoughts. These resources will help you to further develop your essay. Here are some links to help you as well: · Comparing and Contrasting · The Five-Paragraph Essay USE OF RESOURCES: Rowland, while you do a good job of incorporating information from your outside sources, you want to make sure that you explain how this information supports your claims. I also noticed at least one area where you haven’t clearly identified the resource you use to develop your essay. In a research paper, readers need to know when you rely on outside sources. If you do not make this distinction, you might accidentally plagiarize or use someone else’s words or ideas as though they are your own. You will see at least one area in your paper where I point out possible plagiarism. You will see text highlighted in lime green that is assumed to have come from source material because it is not common knowledge and would have had to come from an outside source. GRAMMAR & MECHANICS: Rowland, the few grammatical and mechanical errors that I found in your paper pertain to comma usage. Check are some links to help you with those errors: 1. Finding Common Errors 1. Extended Rules for Using Commas Be sure to check out the comments that I have left throughout the text of your essay Good luck with your revisions! In this paper, you will explore what a future sustainable world might look like, and in the process of doing so, extend your previous descriptions of selected terms and explain how they may play a role in aiding us in achieving environmental sustainability on a global scale. The Journey to Sustainability Imagine a future (probably a long time from now) in which human beings have achieved environmental sustainability on a global scale. That means that we as a species have figured out how to maintain a lifestyle that can go on indefinitely. Humans will exist in harmony with their environment, not needing more resources than can naturally be replenished. What would such a world be like? How might we get there from here? In this final assignment, you will play the part of science-fiction writer, imagining and describing what a sustainable Earth, inhabited by humans, might look like in the distant future. You will need to provide examples throughout to support your descriptions. You should include all the terms that you have researched during Weeks 1 through 4 of this class, underlining each term as you include it. Be sure to expand on your terms and include other concepts that you learned in the course. Provide as detailed a picture as possible of how that future world might function on a day-to-day basis. In your paper, use grammar and spell-checking programs to insure clarity. Proofread carefully prior to submitting your work. F.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
