Question 1
1. 1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
2. • ‘I Can See You’ follows typical sub-genre
conventions of the thriller theme.
• Within the teaser trailer we have tried to use
fast cuts with a variety of shots to convey the
‘stalking’ plot. In particular, POV shots follow
what the stalker can see. The leaves from
branches in front of the camera make the shot
more realistic, the stalker is avoiding from
being seen by the female protagonist.
3. POV shot from the villain, peeking
through at the female protagonist
Contrast darkened but the green leaves from plant look emphasised, which highlights
what the stalker is hiding behind and that they are actually trying not to be seen.
4. • Most shots were filmed during the day time
and natural sunlight, as this was the only time
we could film. In actual trailer’s they have the
availabilities to film whenever, specifically
horror films filming at night – a genre
convention. To make the shots within our
teaser trailer appear more authentic that they
were filmed in dark light, we decreased the
contrast and saturation on iMovie and
Photoshop (film poster and magazine image)
to do this.
5. Production company
Large film title with tagline
The release date Where you can watch the film and
the film’s website
6. • Following typical horror and thriller
conventions within film it can always been
seen and a key element within the plot line
there is a protagonist (hero-like figure, the
‘good guy’) and an antagonist (the villain). This
is a factor that we wanted to utilise within ‘I
Can See You’ as it is a plot function that
interests the audience and never fails to be
successful.
7. • With many horror films, the aspect of gore is a main
attribute but as we wanted to mix the horror and
thriller genres together we decided that our teaser
trailer show the thrilling element of the film. We
decided upon the ‘stalking’ and ‘obsession’ theme
from the thriller genre as it symbolises realism, as it
can and has happened within reality. Our antagonist
within the trailer never reveals their face and is seen
hooded to remove any identity which often appears in
films with the same genre. Within our film we have
decided that the ‘stalker’ will never be found out.
Stalker’s like within ‘The Roomate’ (2011) are visible
and known to the spectator and this loses a sense of
realism, shock and fear which we didn’t want to do
with our teaser trailer.
8. • When we began developing the teaser trailer
within iMovie it was important for us to make
sure that the genre of the film was prominent
and not obscure to the spectator. Our editing
pace had to be increased as this is what we found
features in horror trailers, this is important
because production companies often reveal the
most interesting scenes of the film (the action) as
this is what the audience will need to see to
become engaged and want to watch the film at
the cinema. Making the scenes appear fast in the
trailer makes the film appear more intriguing to
the audience and can entice them to watch it.
9. • Location is an important part of the filming
process and especially our chosen genre. The
location can emphasise the fear aspect. For
example, we have one seen within our teaser
trailer that what filmed in a subway, it was
isolated at the time and was the perfect
surrounding to suit the conventions we
needed for the trailer.
10. • In many films where there is seen to be a protagonist
and an antagonist, the protagonist is given the POV
(point-of-view) shots as the audience then will know
who’s side that they should be on, and they can also
see what their ‘hero’ is seeing from their perspective.
We challenged this and used POV shots from the
antagonist. The audience therefore seeing what the
‘bad guy’ is seeing, and often when shown in the
teaser trailer the antagonist is often stalking the
female. The spectator could feel apprehension from
knowing that they are virtually in the shoes of the
stalker, but it can add fear and emphasise more of a
thrill as the audience know that the protagonist is
being watched but they can’t help her.
