12. Writing Style
College Magazine Music Magazine
When writing for my college I created a first draft of my
magazine, I just wrote my text article to make sure I
without any thought for my corrected any errors or
audience. inconsistencies in my writing
style. I also chose words to
suit my audience such as ‘’
which would connect to my
target market in order for
them to purchase my
magazine.
13. Overall i think there is a clear positive
progression from my preliminary task to my
actual task. There was no planning or audience
research in any areas of my college magazine.
Therefore my magazine couldn’t fulfil its full
potential due to I didnt know what my actual
audience wanted. However my music magazine
was a lot more successful due to researching,
planning and using more advanced production
stages, such as photoshop rather than publisher.
14. Research
I used both audience and market research in order for my to
develop my music magazine.
For my audience research i created a survey on
www.surveymonkey.com which i posted on social networking
website, facebook. Once i had received 20 responses I closed the
survey and analysed my results. It gave me a clear idea of what I
needed to include in my magazine such as music magazines are only
bought when ‘one catches their eye.’ It also gave me primary
knowledge on what to include in my magazine such as gig reviews,
interviews and competitions.
For my market research I received media packs from established
indie/rock based music magazines. I analysed these to discover a
gap in the market for my mainly indie based magazine for teenagers
with a love for live music.
15. I first of all created a pitch to create
a profile on what i plan for my Planning
magazine to be like. I kept referring
back to my pitch during the
production stage as i felt i needed to
stick to my pitch which was based
around my research.
I also made a style sheet. This
allowed me to show example images,
text and colour schemes i was
proposing this use. This helped me
decide which would be suitable for
my audience rather than just choosing
random ones, like in my preliminary
task.
16. I then made flat plan designs. This gave
Planning
me a chance to experiment with
different possible designs i could use
when creating my actual magazine.
This allowed me to see what would
work with my draft content and what
wouldn’t.
17. I then created photography plans and a
contact sheet. Creating these helped me
Planning
think about how i should actually take my
images and then once i had taken then,
choosing the best suited ones.
18. Planning
I also made a more complex flat plan DPS with my
proposed article draft. This allowed me to think
more about what sort of words to include to suit
my target audience

• Image manipulation - adding different shadows around
images to make a photobooth effect and make them stand out on my DPS
• Text manipulation - adding a drop shadow onto a ordinary title
in order to create an effect that stands out against a busy image
