2. HISTORY OF WIKIPEDIA
Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry
Sanger.
Larry Sanger used the name Wikipedia because a wiki is, “a website that
allows collaborative editing of its content and structure by its users”
and the Hawaiian word for quick.
Wikipedia received a lot of attention in 2006 by the print media, including
Time Magazine.
It started to rapidly grow and millions of people around the world started
using it.

3. WIKIPEDIA OVERVIEW
“Wikipedia is a free, open content online encyclopedia
created through the collaborative effort of a community of
users known as Wikipedians . Anyone registered on the
site can create an article for publication; registration is
not required to edit articles. The site's name comes from
wiki , a server program that enables anyone to edit Web
site content through their Web browser”.

4. WIKIPEDIA DESCRIPTION
Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia where you can find out a lot of
information on many different subject matters. The only negative part is
anymore can write or edit an article on Wikipedia therefore we do not
know if everything on the website is reliable information but if we verify
information from other places we can figure out if the information is
accurate.

The user problems it solves are learning new information, being able to
write articles and publishing them on the internet for free, and having
the access to edit articles if they are not correct.
The audience Wikipedia is intended for is anyone who wants to read, write,
or edit articles about many things on the internet. Wikipedia is available
in many different languages therefore people all over the world can use
it.

5. FEATURES OF WIKIPEDIA
Wikipedia offers 4,329,582 articles to read in English.
The main topics of the articles are art, biography, geography, history,
mathematics, science, society, and technology.
Wikipedia has a “today’s featured article”, “in the news”, “on this day…”,
“did you know”, and “today’s featured picture” on it’s home page
everyday.
Wikipedia is available in 264 languages. You can easily change the
language from the main page of the home page of any language.
If you see a mistake in an article on Wikipedia you can easily change it by
editing the article. You edit the article by clicking the edit button in the
top right.
You can easily write your own Wikipedia article first by going to “Your first
article” then the “Article Wizard”.

6. FEATURES OF WIKIPEDIA CONTINUED
There is a random article tab on Wikipedia’s home page if you are
interested in reading something random that you might not usually
read.
If you want to collaborate, find news, or tasks about Wikipedia you can visit
the Community Portal. You can find the link to the community portal
from the home English Wikipedia page.
You can find out about all the recent changes made to Wikipedia by going
to the recent changes link located on the home English Wikipedia page.
You can access information about what the change was, who made it,
and what time it was changed.
On the contact page off of the English Wikipedia’s home page you can read
about how to report a problem, article subject, licensing, donors, press
and partnership.

7. WIKIPEDIA AND WEB 2.0
The application Wikipedia supports is Web 2.0.
Web 2.0 is what is used by web sites that use new web technology and no
longer use the old technology.
The term “Web 2.0” was created by Darcy DiNucci and later Tim O’Reilly
made it popular at the O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference that happened
in late 2004.
A Web 2.0 websites allows users to interact with each other through the
web.

8. HOW TO FIND WIKIPEDIA
The URL to find Wikipedia is http://www.wikipedia.org. When you open up
that URL you can select the language you would like to search
Wikipedia in. After you select a language you can search for many
things Wikipedia has to offer in the search bar.
You can make a Wikipedia account by going to
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin/signup&re
turnto=Wikipedia%3AWhy_create_an_account%3F and filling out the
necessary information (username, password, optional email address,
and a security check). You do not need an account to search Wikipedia
but it is good to have one because you can chose an appropriate
username, communicate with other account holders, use move
advanced editing tools, and much more.
