3. What attracts me to this genre
• I find the Genre Action very thrilling and full of
suspense, throughout any action film are the codes and
conventions of fast cars, guns, crime, drugs and female
representation who are sexually objectified. This is
what attracts me to this genre. I enjoy the suspense
and the whole atmosphere of not knowing what is
going to happen next.
• As we sit in a movie theatre for an action film, our eyes
are dazzled and mesmerized by the explosions, car
chases, fist fights, and weapons of destruction that are
shown in the cinema screen.
4. Dredd 2013
Anthony Dod Mantle, BSC is a British cinematographer notable for his work in digital
cinematography was the cinematographer for Dredd 2012 a massive profitable, success film,
other film that he has worked on are films such as 172 hours, Rush, Slumdog Millionaire,
Trance and 28 days later. The Production of Dredd 2012 took place in south Africa because I as
most Practicle and cost effective for shooing the starting base o Mega City one. The location
shows parts of of Johannesburg and Cape Town. The Writer Alex Garland had regualer contact
with the Judge Dreadd creator John Wagner. They used VFX for the blood and gore when
people are being shot, so for reference we fired bullets at blood bags and prosthetic skin and
noticed the stringy nature of the blood and the shock wave impact of the bullet on skin. We
shot as much of it as possible in layers so we could control the action and in VFX we added
particulates in the air to add depth to the stereo. The slo-mo 'look' was developed over a period
of time and consisted of separating out the colours and objects in the scene and taking them in
different directions with hue and saturation. Add to that some sparkles in the highlights and
some heightened stereo and we had our drug look. The Film used a lot of VFX, The total VFX
used was close to 300 and had a total shot count of 650 shots
5. Need for speed
The Need For Speed film is very action based
staring Aaron Paul who stars in the popular TV
series breaking bad.
The director of need for speed is Scott Waugh who
has directed films such as 2002 Spiderman and
Act of Valor (2012).
The story is about cross-country race against
time-one that begins as a mission for revenge, but
proves to be one of redemption. In a last attempt
to save his struggling garage, blue-collar mechanic
Tobey Marshall-who with his team skilfully builds
and races muscle cars.
The story is a plot on revenge with Aaron pauls
best friend dies due to the bad guy the antagonist
in the film Dino Brewster who clips his back
bumper and makes little Pete crash and die.
However the antagonist doesn’t go back to look at
him and make sure he is okay leaving him to die.
There for the themes in this film are revenge
friendship and love.
6. Batman
The batman film franchise are very popular all over the world batman started out as a
television series back in January 12, 1966. the director of that latest batman film is
7. Intertextuality
• Dredd has Intertextuality with other films and games such as ROBOCOP , w9th the
whole I am the law, and action. Both films show Intertextuality with each other for
example they both have the Intertextuality of the clothing as shown in the images
below.
• The Intertextuality in a film makes you to want to watch the film more for example
the if a previous film is good and has a good rating from the IMDB , and a new film
that is similar to it then this encourages you to watch the film.
9. Star Theory
• Many people go to watch a film because of its actors and story
line. If I was a huge fan from someone such as Daniel Craig
then I would want to go and see his latest movie that he is
filmed in,
• If the star is there main actor then I would want to go and see
it and if the actor plays his last even scene then I would want
to go and see it. For example one of my favourite actors is Seth
Rogan and he has been in films such as pineapple express and
in June 2014 he is playing the lead actor of a film called Bad
Neighbours.
10. Media literacy
• When a film is coming out and about to be
released they advertise there film or there
product on social networking such as Facebook
twitter and other social networking sites. They
advertise there film by adding there film, trailer
in to web banners on other websites also another
way that we hear about films is on YouTube every
day people watch hundreds of thousands of
videos on YouTube so this is the perfect
opportunity to get people to see the trailer.
11. Media literacy
This is an
example of
Media Literacy
used as you can
see I am
watching a video
on YouTube
when before the
advert starts it
comes up with a
trailer for A
million ways to
die in the west a
comedy film
featuring Seth
MacFarlane and
Liam nelson.
As you can see I
have to option to
press skip ad
12. Reception Theory
• Reception Theory is where how we react to a film
based upon our age, gender, ethnicity, social class.
For example a teenage male who loves action films
and is from a normal social class would love to watch
Godzilla a action disaster hi fi film where a 10 year
old female who has a different ethnicity and from a
different social class would not like to see the film
Godzilla and would want to watch something more
appropriate for her age.
