Marathon a city, a name, a legend!
Marathon is the unique city in the word that has given its name to an Olympic sport
and the only Greek city that is the most renowned in the whole word even more
renowned than Athens.
The name Marathon is inextricably connected to the history of the Greek nation ever
since the ancient times. We encounter the name in the mythology, as it is the place
where Thiseas killed the terrible bull of Marathon. In classical history, one of the most
renowned battles took place in the Marathon plain, a battle that symbolizes the
unquenchable love of Greek people for freedom and independence.
Marathon constitutes an emblematic symbol of democracy and the trophy of
supremacy of human values and spirit against any conqueror.
Marathon 490 BC ...
A travel of 2500 years back in time Athenian and Plataean soldiers, Persian archers,
images of a battle that determined the whole course of human history.
Marathon race: 42,195 kilometers of glory and history
Marathon race of 42.195 meters designates the grandeur of human strength. It is a
legend of 2.500 years beginning with the myth of Pheidiooides and reaching the
modem heroes of classic sports. This race unites millions of people in all around the
world.
3. Marathon Today
Marathon is not just one of the most famous toponyms around the world, but also a
city worth visiting and admiring for its natural beauty and enchanting atmosphere.
Built on the northeast coast of Attica, just 40 km away from Athens, Marathon has
become a very attractive destination for visitors, as it is only twenty minutes away
from Athens International Airport and just ten minutes away from the port of Rafina, a
port that connects the Greek capital with the cosmopolitan Aegean islands. It is also
one of the few areas of Attica, which combines the blue sea and the green of the
mountains (as it is located at the foothills of Mount Penteli and bordered by the Gulf of
Evia).

The referee will be a Beach Volleyball Referee, (at least to the highest national level)
and will lead the game exactly according to the FIVB rules:
• The service reception and the defence/reception of soft driven balls like
drives/shots must be executed with underhand pass or with tomahawk or poke
shot or supporting techniques like one hand reception/defence
• Only the hard driven balls can be defended with the overhand pass/beach dig
• During the action of players setting overhand with fingers, the ball must be
played with one quick motion. There must not be any significant movement of
the ball downwards whilst in the hands and the ball may not visibly come to
rest in the player's hands. The emphasis with the double contact is that this is
not indicated by the spin of the ball but by the fact that a clear fault - time
difference between the two hands that contact the ball - has occurred and that
this is visible for the Referee
• The only exception is the block against the service that is allowed by WOVD in
Sitting Volleyball.
