2. What is Facebook?
ď Facebook is a social networking site where users can add
people as friends, send messages, chat, share photos and
videos and update their personal profiles to notify friends
about themselves
3. Facebook Facts
ď Facebook is a social networking website launched in
February 2004
ď Facebook has more than 500 million active users in July
2010, which is about one person for every fourteen in the
world
ď The average American spends 66 hours a month online
and 7 of those are spent on Facebook
ď Facebook is the #1 website world wide, with more page
views than Google
ď http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zihI7fYeq2o
4. Facebook and Your Business
ď There is no charge to create a Page for your business
ď Over one third of Facebook users âlikeâ Pages of one or
more brand or business- over 132 million people
ď The number one reason users become fans of a brand or
business is to receive offers and promotions
ď 56% of internet users cite Facebook Pages and their updates
as having significant influence over buying decisions
ď Users click through 2X more links through Facebook than
through Google
5. History of Facebook
ď Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with his college
roommates, fellow computer science students
ď The website's membership was initially limited by the founders
to Harvard students, but quickly was expanded to other
colleges in the Boston area and Ivy League schools
ď It gradually added support for students at various other
universities before opening to high school students, and,
finally, to anyone aged 13 and over, in 2006
6. Basic Facebook Terms
ď Group- Is like a club created by bands, companies and
other organizations to promote their activities
ď Network- Friends and acquaintances that center on a
school, company, or military organization
ď Status- A micro-blogging feature which allows users to
inform their friends of their current whereabouts, actions,
or thoughts
ď Like- AÂ link next to something that allows users to let
others know they appreciate something like a video, page
or an article
8. News Feed
ď Appears on every user's homepage and highlights information
including profile changes, upcoming events, and birthdays of the
user's friends
9. Profile
ď A Facebook site intended for and created by people who want
to share personal information about themselves and socialize
with others
10. Wall
ď A featured space on every user's profile page that allows friends
and users themselves to post messages for others to see
11. Info
ď Part of a profile that allows users to inform others about
themselves including birthday, city, phone number, work and
school info, favorite movies and TV shows and more
12. Privacy Settings
ď Allow a user to control who can or cannot see different parts of
the userâs profile
13. Sharing Information on Facebook
ď This section controls who can see all the content you post on
a day-to-day basis (status updates, photos, etc)
ď Also includes some things you share about yourself (birthday
and contact information) and content others share about you
(comments on your posts and photos and videos you've been
tagged in)
ď "Customize settings" displays a full list so you can control the
privacy level for each setting
14. Basic Directory Information
ď Certain information is visible to everyone because it's essential to
helping people find and connect with you on Facebook. Name and
profile picture are visible to everyone so real world friends can
recognize you, and so we can display them when you write on
someone's Wall
ď Gender is public so we can correctly display your gender (for
example, "Add her as a friendâ)
ď Networks are visible to everyone so you can see who else is part of
your network (and will have access to your information) before
choosing "Friends and Networks" for any of your privacy settings
ď Other information in this section, including hometown and interests,
is visible by default to help friends and other people you have things
in common with connect with you
15. Application and Website Settings
ď This section controls what information is shared with websites and
applications, including search engines (applications and websites you
and your friends use already have access to your name, profile
picture, gender, networks, friend list, user ID, and any other
information you share with everyone)
ď You can view your applications, remove any you don't want to use,
or turn off platform completely
ď Turning off platform means you won't be able to use any platform
applications or websites and we won't share your information with
them
16. Everyone, Friends of Friends & Friends
ď "Everyone" is best for information that people may want to share
with a larger audience and can potentially be seen by anyone on
Facebook (Would you share this info with everyone on the street?)
ď "Friends of Friends" is best for things like photos and videos of you,
which are often relevant to friends of your friends (Would you share
this info with everyone you went to school with?)
ď "Friends Only" is for things you only wish to share with people you
are directly friends with
ď Custom option is available if you wish to organize your friends into
groups and select visibility based on groups (ie co-workers cannot
see photos, but all other friends can)
17. Block Lists
ď This section lets you block people from interacting with you or
seeing your information on Facebook
ď When you block a person, you cut all ties (friends, details and
comments) with the person and you will not show up when they
search for you while logged in to their account
ď You can also specify friends you want to ignore application invites
from, and see a list of the specific applications that you've blocked
from accessing your information and contacting you
18. Preview My Profile
ď This feature on the Privacy Settings page lets you see how
different people can view your page with the settings you
have selected
ď The view that comes up is your directory listing as it would be
seen by someone that is not a friend
ď You can type in the name of a friend to see how they would
see your profile
19. Tagging in Your Status
ď To add a friend's name, group or Page to something you are
posting, just include the "@" symbol beforehand
ď As you type the name of what you would like to reference, a drop-
down menu will appear that allows you to choose from your list of
friends, groups, events, applications and Pages
ď The "@" symbol will not be displayed in the published status update
or post after you've added your tags
ď Friends, Groups or Pages you tag in your status updates will receive
a notification and a Wall post linking them to your post (if their
settings allow this)
20. Page
ď Facebook site intended for and created by artists, musical
groups, celebrities, businesses, brands and similar entities (not
individuals for themselves)
21. Business Page
ď Creating a Page is very similar to creating a profile- visit
http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php upload a photo
or your logo, fill in the desired description and contact
information and invite your friends to âLikeâ it
ď To keep your page relevant, interesting and indexing well itâs a
good idea to regularly update your Page with videos, pictures,
offers, quizzes and information that relates to your business
and field
ď The person who establishes the Page is the administrator and
can decide what âLikesâ and other people have access to on
the page
22. Insights for your Page
ď On the left hand side of your page (from an administratorâs
account) by the fold is a Insights area
ď This provides detailed feedback about your likes, post
feedback, demographics of users and how many people
looked at content on your page like photos and videos
ď This is a great tool to use to see how your users react to
particular offers, deals or information you post
ď This is also a great tool to see what type of people might be
interested in your business
