 THE “POLS” ARE FACING HEAVY TRAFFIC AND CONGESTION
LEADING TO LACK OF INFRASTRUCURE AND SERVICES.
 SINCE LOCATED IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY, RAPID
COMMERCIALISATION IS TAKING PLACE RESULTING IN THE DECAY
OF RICH TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE.
 MIGRATION OF PEOPLE TOWARDS MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE AND
AMENITIES IS LEADING TO NGLIGENCE AND DETERIORATION.
 GROWTH IN TECHNOLOGY AND LACK OF AMENTIES AND CHANGE
IN LIFESTYLE OF PEOPLE IS LEADING TO IMMIGIRATION.
 STREETS WERE DESIGNED SOME 600 YEARS AGO THEREFORE
CANNOT SUPPORT HEAVY TRAFFIC AND LACK OPEN

MODERN MODERN BUILDING REQUIREMENTS BUT
THEY SHOULD BE ECONOMICAL THEN THEY WILL HELP
US PRESERVE OUR HERITAGE THROUGH SUSTAINABLE

SOME MINOR CHANGES:
•THE HOUSE WAS PREVIOUSLY USED BY 12 PEOPLE AND NOW IS USED BY
4 PEOPLE, THEREFORE THERE IS AMPLE PLACE FOR SOME OTHER
ACTIVITY.
•UPPER FLOORS ARE PROPOSED TO BE USED AS
RESTAURANTS,LIBRARY AND INFORMATICS CENTRE PROVIDING
INFORMATION ABOUT ART,CULTURE,HERITAGE,TRADITION OF GUJRAT
FOR TOURISTS.
CONDITION ASSESMENT OF THE
HOUSE:

CONCLUSIONS:
 PRESERVING OUR HERITAGE IS VITAL AS IT ADDS TO OUR INTELLIGENCE.
 WE CAN STRENGTHEN OUR FUTURE STRATEGIES FOR DEVELOPMENT.
 AS THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE POL HOUSES IS IN CONJUNCTION TO THE
CLIMATIC,SOCIAL, CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS IT CAN ACT AS A MODEL
FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS TO LEARN THE PRINCIPALS OF SUSTAINIBILITY
AND ORIGINATED TO MEET THE BASIC NEEDS OF THE
OWNER/INHABITANTS.
 THE PROCESS OF PRESERVATION SHOULD NOT ONLY EXHIBIT THE OLD
HOUSES AS OBJECTS BUT TO SUCCESSFULLY ADOPT THEM SO THAT THEY
BECOME SELF SUSTAINED.
 TRADITIONAL STRUCTURES SHOULD BE UPGRADED TO RECREATE
QUALITY HABITANTS AND SOURCES OF TECHNICAL KNOWHOW AS THEY
ARE BASED IN RESPONSE TO CLIMATIC AND SOCIAL FACTORS KEEPING IN
MIND HUMAN REQUIREMENTS.
 SUSTAINIBILTY CAN BE ACHIEVED ONLY IF THESE STRUCTURES ARE
ADOPTED FOR CONTEMPORARY USES WHIVH WILL SAVE OUR BUILT
HERITAGE AND ALSO CONSERVE THE EMBODIED ENERGY USED TO BUILT

POL HOUSES DERIVATION OF WORD AND FEATURES:  THE WORD POL IS DERIVED FROM “PATROLI” MEANING A GATE OR ENTRY.  6000 POLS WITH 12 ENTRANCE GATES AND CONNECTED BY 2 MAIN STREETS.  “POL” CAN BE DEFINED AD MICRO NEIGHBOURHOOD WITH HOUSES OF VARYING SIZES ON BOTH ENDS.  FEATURES: A) HAVE ONE OR MORE TEMPLES B)BIRD FEEDER C)ELABORATE FACADES WITH INTRICATE CARVINGS D)NARROW STREETS E)SECRET EXIT PASSAGES DURING EMERGENCIES.  GENERALLY,PLOTS SHARE A 3 WALL BOUNDARY WITH ADJOINING HOUSES AND HAVE OPENING IN THE FRONT ONLY.  SPACES ARE DIVIDED AS PER PUBLIC,CHOWK AND PRIVATE SPACES. PRESENT CONTEXT  THE “POLS” ARE FACING HEAVY TRAFFIC AND CONGESTION LEADING TO LACK OF INFRASTRUCURE AND SERVICES.  SINCE LOCATED IN THE CENTRE OF THE CITY, RAPID COMMERCIALISATION IS TAKING PLACE RESULTING IN THE DECAY OF RICH TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE.  MIGRATION OF PEOPLE TOWARDS MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE AND AMENITIES IS LEADING TO NGLIGENCE AND DETERIORATION.  GROWTH IN TECHNOLOGY AND LACK OF AMENTIES AND CHANGE IN LIFESTYLE OF PEOPLE IS LEADING TO IMMIGIRATION.  STREETS WERE DESIGNED SOME 600 YEARS AGO THEREFORE CANNOT SUPPORT HEAVY TRAFFIC AND LACK OPEN SPACES,PARKING SPACES. INITIATIVES TAKEN :  SOME FAMILIES WHO HAV SHIFTED TO OTHER AREAS ARE WILLING TO CONSERVE PROPERTIES WITH PROPER GUIDANCE AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT.  AMC(AHMEDABAD MUNICIPAL CORPORATION) IS WRORKING ON PROMOTION OF HERITAGE CONSERVATION AND ADAPTIVE REUSE ACTIVITIES  INITIATIVES ARE TAKEN BY GOVT AS WELL AS NON GOVT ORGANISATIONS.  SOLUTIONS: A) ADAPTIVE REUSE OF THESE HOUSES: MAINTAIN THE ORIGINAL FABRIC AND JUST ALTERING THE ORIGINAL USE. B) ORGANISING HERITAGE WALKS IN AND AROUND THAT AREAS.(INNER AREAS ARE EXPLORED IN TERMS OFREFRENCE:JOURNAL OF NDIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS JUNE 2013. BY AR.

PROPOSAL:  IDENTIFICATION AND PROPOSING REUSE OPTIONS INVOLVING AND SUITING THE INHABITANTS WILL LEAD TO PRESERVATION OF “POL” HOUSES  IF THE PROPOSED USE IS IN TUNE OF THE OWNER IT HELPS TO GENERATE MONEY WHICH CAN BE USED FOR MAINTAINENCE OF THESE HOUSES.  MINOR MODIFICATIONS CAN BE MADE TO ADAPT THESE HOUSES TO MAKE THEM COMPATIBLE TO NEW USES.  SYSTEMS INSTALLED CAN BE UPGRADED TO MEET MODERN MODERN BUILDING REQUIREMENTS BUT THEY SHOULD BE ECONOMICAL THEN THEY WILL HELP US PRESERVE OUR HERITAGE THROUGH SUSTAINABLE PRACTISE. EXAMPLE OF ADAPTIVE REUSE: DARYAPUR WARD II THIS HOUSE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE ADAPTIVELY REUSED WITH SOME MINOR CHANGES: •THE HOUSE WAS PREVIOUSLY USED BY 12 PEOPLE AND NOW IS USED BY 4 PEOPLE, THEREFORE THERE IS AMPLE PLACE FOR SOME OTHER ACTIVITY. •UPPER FLOORS ARE PROPOSED TO BE USED AS RESTAURANTS,LIBRARY AND INFORMATICS CENTRE PROVIDING INFORMATION ABOUT ART,CULTURE,HERITAGE,TRADITION OF GUJRAT FOR TOURISTS.

CONCLUSIONS:  PRESERVING OUR HERITAGE IS VITAL AS IT ADDS TO OUR INTELLIGENCE.  WE CAN STRENGTHEN OUR FUTURE STRATEGIES FOR DEVELOPMENT.  AS THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE POL HOUSES IS IN CONJUNCTION TO THE CLIMATIC,SOCIAL, CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS IT CAN ACT AS A MODEL FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS TO LEARN THE PRINCIPALS OF SUSTAINIBILITY AND ORIGINATED TO MEET THE BASIC NEEDS OF THE OWNER/INHABITANTS.  THE PROCESS OF PRESERVATION SHOULD NOT ONLY EXHIBIT THE OLD HOUSES AS OBJECTS BUT TO SUCCESSFULLY ADOPT THEM SO THAT THEY BECOME SELF SUSTAINED.  TRADITIONAL STRUCTURES SHOULD BE UPGRADED TO RECREATE QUALITY HABITANTS AND SOURCES OF TECHNICAL KNOWHOW AS THEY ARE BASED IN RESPONSE TO CLIMATIC AND SOCIAL FACTORS KEEPING IN MIND HUMAN REQUIREMENTS.  SUSTAINIBILTY CAN BE ACHIEVED ONLY IF THESE STRUCTURES ARE ADOPTED FOR CONTEMPORARY USES WHIVH WILL SAVE OUR BUILT HERITAGE AND ALSO CONSERVE THE EMBODIED ENERGY USED TO BUILT REFRENCE:JOURNAL OF NDIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS JUNE 2013.
