Tourism has significantly impacted the Spanish fishing village of Benidorm. Originally a small village with 6,200 residents and a few hotels in 1960, Benidorm now has 55,000 residents and receives 350,000 tourists at its peak, most of them British. The rise of tourism has transformed the local economy and lifestyle, providing jobs but also increasing costs and crowding. Local industries like fishing have declined as tourism has come to dominate the economy and landscape.
