GEOGRAPHY AT THE MOVIES!
Science Fact or Science Fiction
Natural disasters such as volcanoes are often used as the basis
for films and cartoons but how accurately are these natural
disasters portrayed?
Can you tell the difference between
science fact and science fiction?
SUPERMAN – VOLCANO - 1942
Watch the cartoon and in
your books note the
following:
•Any three things about the
cartoon that you know are
‘scientific fact’ based on
what you know about
volcanoes.
• Now write down 3 things
that are not scientifically
possible or are unlikely to
actually happen.
Science Fact Science
Fiction
1. What types or tests / monitoring do the
scientists do to check the level of
volcanic activity – list what you see.
2. What are the hazards for people living in
Dante’s Peak?
3. Why don’t the council follow the USGS
advice to evacuate the town?
4. Describe three things in the film that
are scientifically reasonable or likely to
happen.
5. List three things in the film that are
scientifically accurate.
DANTE’S PEAK - 1997 Complete the worksheet as you
watch!
