CEEDS Partners
 FP7 FET Human Computer Confluence project
 September 2010 – August 2014
 Consortium comprises 16 partners from 8 European countries
 15 leading research centres and universities and
 And a world-leading white goods manufacturer

The Problem: Data Deluge
 Our ability to generate data exceeds our
capability to understand it
© CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20144
The CEEDS Project
 CEEDS is developing an integrated theoretical and
technological framework that, through the enactive merging of
physical and virtual sources of stimulation, will deliver
novel ways for the on-line perception, creation of and
interaction with massive volumes of data
© CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20145
Project’s Objectives
 To build new synthetic reality (SR) systems that allow
people to consciously experience properties of large
data sets
© CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20146
How CEEDs works
 CEEDs is monitoring signals of discovery
or surprise in subconscious processes,
when users are experiencing innovative,
artistic visualisations of large data sets
 Where it identifies such signals, CEEDs will
use them to direct users to areas/zones
of potential interest in the visualisations
 Individuals’ pattern detection and
discoveries will be augmented by linking
multiple users together, creating a
collective discovery system
© CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20147
Identify signals of discovery
 CEEDs measures a range of variables, including users’:
 heart rate
 skin conductance
 eye gaze
 observable behaviours
 speech characteristics
 and brain activity
© CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20148
CEEDs: uses cases
 CEEDs comprises
 one application: experience induction
 two core use cases:
 to communicate known meaning
 with sensitivity to user’s state, including to
components of state of which user is not aware
 to support discovery
 exploiting recognition of user responses (implicit
and explicit) according to user model
© CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20149
Use Case Implementations
 CEEDs as an application can be implement across several domains
Neuroscience Archaeology
History Commercial scenarios
© CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-201410
CEEDs for neuroscience
 The CEEDS Neuroscience application will be a tool
for scientists, who will be able to visualize the
intricate brain connectivity (both at the structural
and functional level) and disclose different layers
of complexity, test brain models and manipulate
them in real time as well as use this application for
discovery (e.g. new patterns etc…).
© CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-201411
CEEDs for designers
 To inform the design of optimised desirable white goods
 monitoring implicit users’ responses to virtual representations of appliances, specifically
where users focus attention (gaze direction);
 delineating products into parts (e.g., handle, display) that are considered satisfactory /
unsatisfactory (evaluated against thresholds, e.g. level of satisfaction/posit - negat valence)
 replacing parts that are:
 ‘tagged’ as non satisfactory with parts that least match that which were initially presented
 ‘tagged’ as satisfactory with parts that most match that which were initially presented to
identify whether higher satisfaction reactions can be elicited
 evaluating implicit responses to replacement parts in an iterative cycle until all component
product parts receive optimised satisfaction ratings (if none of the opts reaches the
satisfaction threshold, users can sketch their preference and a similarity search can be run)
 the recorded implicit/explicit responses of users (as individuals or groups) to the product
range are accessed and reviewed by the product design team who are able to sort the
results (e.g., by level of satisfaction per part/overall product)
© CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-201412
CEEDs for consumers
 In a commercially oriented scenario, an objective is to explore the
use of CEEDS technologies to allow users to develop CEEDs
Universal Personal Preferences (CUPP). These will contain the
explicit and implicit preferences of users with respect to their
interests and behaviours. The CUPP will be generated while the user
experiences a CEEDs system. Users can, upon their agreement,
make their CUPP file available through their mobile phones and
received a service more tailored to their history and interests
WORKSHOP CHALLENGE (60 min):
what can you imagine as other innovative usage scenarios using the CEEDs
approach and core features?
DESCRIBE
 The problem/s you want to solve
 Innovative solution/s with a descriptive scenario (or a set of scenarios) that illustrate, from the
user's perspective, what will be experienced when using the system under various situations
(using CEEDs core features)
ANSWER
 What are its key features?
 When, where and how to use it?
 Who is it for? (types of users)
 What are their needs? (problems/possibilities/context of use)
 What are their requirements? (clear statements of any function, constraint, or other property
that the system should do/have to satisfy the user needs) (e.g., performance, reliability,
usability, security)
 What are the scientific and engineering challenges to realising the scenarios? How best to
address the challenges?
 What are potential monetisation routes for your solution?
drawings are welcome

CEEDs - Collective Experience of Empathic Data Systems - Dr J Freeman - HCDI seminar 10 May 2013

  • 1. The Collective Experience of Empathic Data Systems © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-2014 The CEEDs project Dr Jonathan Freeman, CEEDs Project Coordinator Senior Lecturer, Psychology, Goldsmiths, University of London and Managing Director, i2 media research limited An empathic adaptive system for consumers and designers - MAY 10th 2013
  • 2. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20142 CEEDS Partners  FP7 FET Human Computer Confluence project  September 2010 – August 2014  Consortium comprises 16 partners from 8 European countries  15 leading research centres and universities and  And a world-leading white goods manufacturer
  • 3. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20143 The Problem: Data Deluge  Our ability to generate data exceeds our capability to understand it
  • 4. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20144 The CEEDS Project  CEEDS is developing an integrated theoretical and technological framework that, through the enactive merging of physical and virtual sources of stimulation, will deliver novel ways for the on-line perception, creation of and interaction with massive volumes of data
  • 5. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20145 Project’s Objectives  To build new synthetic reality (SR) systems that allow people to consciously experience properties of large data sets
  • 6. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20146 How CEEDs works  CEEDs is monitoring signals of discovery or surprise in subconscious processes, when users are experiencing innovative, artistic visualisations of large data sets  Where it identifies such signals, CEEDs will use them to direct users to areas/zones of potential interest in the visualisations  Individuals’ pattern detection and discoveries will be augmented by linking multiple users together, creating a collective discovery system
  • 7. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20147 Identify signals of discovery  CEEDs measures a range of variables, including users’:  heart rate  skin conductance  eye gaze  observable behaviours  speech characteristics  and brain activity
  • 8. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20148 CEEDs: uses cases  CEEDs comprises  one application: experience induction  two core use cases:  to communicate known meaning  with sensitivity to user’s state, including to components of state of which user is not aware  to support discovery  exploiting recognition of user responses (implicit and explicit) according to user model
  • 9. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-20149 Use Case Implementations  CEEDs as an application can be implement across several domains Neuroscience Archaeology History Commercial scenarios
  • 10. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-201410 CEEDs for neuroscience  The CEEDS Neuroscience application will be a tool for scientists, who will be able to visualize the intricate brain connectivity (both at the structural and functional level) and disclose different layers of complexity, test brain models and manipulate them in real time as well as use this application for discovery (e.g. new patterns etc…).
  • 11. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-201411 CEEDs for designers  To inform the design of optimised desirable white goods  monitoring implicit users’ responses to virtual representations of appliances, specifically where users focus attention (gaze direction);  delineating products into parts (e.g., handle, display) that are considered satisfactory / unsatisfactory (evaluated against thresholds, e.g. level of satisfaction/posit - negat valence)  replacing parts that are:  ‘tagged’ as non satisfactory with parts that least match that which were initially presented  ‘tagged’ as satisfactory with parts that most match that which were initially presented to identify whether higher satisfaction reactions can be elicited  evaluating implicit responses to replacement parts in an iterative cycle until all component product parts receive optimised satisfaction ratings (if none of the opts reaches the satisfaction threshold, users can sketch their preference and a similarity search can be run)  the recorded implicit/explicit responses of users (as individuals or groups) to the product range are accessed and reviewed by the product design team who are able to sort the results (e.g., by level of satisfaction per part/overall product)
  • 12. © CEEDs Consortium Confidential 2010-201412 CEEDs for consumers  In a commercially oriented scenario, an objective is to explore the use of CEEDS technologies to allow users to develop CEEDs Universal Personal Preferences (CUPP). These will contain the explicit and implicit preferences of users with respect to their interests and behaviours. The CUPP will be generated while the user experiences a CEEDs system. Users can, upon their agreement, make their CUPP file available through their mobile phones and received a service more tailored to their history and interests
  • 13. WORKSHOP CHALLENGE (60 min): what can you imagine as other innovative usage scenarios using the CEEDs approach and core features? DESCRIBE  The problem/s you want to solve  Innovative solution/s with a descriptive scenario (or a set of scenarios) that illustrate, from the user's perspective, what will be experienced when using the system under various situations (using CEEDs core features) ANSWER  What are its key features?  When, where and how to use it?  Who is it for? (types of users)  What are their needs? (problems/possibilities/context of use)  What are their requirements? (clear statements of any function, constraint, or other property that the system should do/have to satisfy the user needs) (e.g., performance, reliability, usability, security)  What are the scientific and engineering challenges to realising the scenarios? How best to address the challenges?  What are potential monetisation routes for your solution? drawings are welcome
