2. “A sound mind in a sound body” is a wise and apt saying. This underlines the importance
of bodily and mental health and the inner- relation of mind and body. Physical exercise is one
among the many important factors that contribute to a healthy constitution.
Exercise may be defined as the activity for training or developing the body or mind,
especially bodily exertion for the sake of health. Exercise, together with good food, make the body
perfect. The one with the other will do harm to the body.
There are many kinds of physical exercises. The simplest of them is walking. Walking in
itself is of different types. There is the ordinary walking every one of us indulges in as part of our
daily activities. Then there is trained walking as in military services and N.C.C. Walking should
be practiced daily for a certain amount of time.
Besides walking, there are many items of bodily exercise practicable by every one of us
without much strain. Playing games like football, badminton etc. Provide both exercise and
entertainment we have to regulate our life to indulge in such games.
There are institutions to impart training in physical exercises. Even as part of education,
drills and exercises have been provided in our curriculum. But in many schools, this part of
education is neglected. This should not be permitted. If bodily training is encouraged from the
school level itself, a healthy future generation will evolve. This will finally lead to the whole nation
being disciplined.
One important effect of physical training is freedom from diseases. In our time, diseases
are a great menace, resulting in loss of precious lives, time and money. Diseases will not visit a
perfectly healthy body. Here in lies the importance of the saying, “prevention is better than cure.”
A general awareness of physical exercise has to be created among our people through
seminars, discussions, corner meetings, training camps etc. Awareness of physical exercise will
naturally lead to its physical practice
