INTRODUCTION
Wireless Technology is an alternative to Wired
Technology, which is commonly used, for
connecting devices in wireless mode.
Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) is one example that
allows an electronic device to exchange data
wirelessly over a computer network, including a
high speed internet connections.
An wireless local area network products based
on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
(IEEE) 802.11 standards.

  PRESENTATION ON WI-FI SLIDE - 3 OF 20
HOW IT WORKS
A Wi-Fi hotspot is created by installing an access point to an
internet connection that acts as a base station.
When Wi-Fi enabled device encounters a hotspot the device can
then connect to that network wirelessly.
A single access point can support up to 30 users and can function
within a range of 100 -150 feet indoors and up to 300 feet outdoors.
Many access points can be connected to each other via Ethernet
cables to create a single large network.
Wi-Fi radio s have a slight difference to other radio’s, Wi-Fi radio’s
transmit frequencies of 2.4 GHz or 5GHz, a considerable high
frequency than that used by cell phones or television radio waves.
The reason being the higher the frequency the more data can be
carried by the signal.

COMPONENTS
Access Point (AP) - The AP is a wireless LAN
transceiver or “base station” that can connect one or
many wireless devices simultaneously to the Internet.
Wi-Fi cards - They accept the wireless signal and relay
information. They can be internal and external.(e.g.
PCMCIA Card for Laptop and PCI Card for Desktop
PC)
Safeguards - Firewalls and anti-virus software protect
networks from uninvited users and keep information
secure.

ADVANTAGES
Unmatched mobility & elasticity
Can be expanded with growth
Quick easy setup
More faster & secure
Convenience
Multiple Connections by sharing hardware
Inexpensive
Good for business
 PRESENTATION ON WI-FI SLIDE - 8 OF 20
LIMITATIONS
High power consumption
Scarcity of hot spots
Updating older computer
Privacy concerns
Interference leading to degradation in
performance
Limited range

 PRESENTATION ON WI-FI SLIDE - 9 OF 20
SECURITY
DATA INTEGRITY
ENCRYPTION
AUTHENTICATION

The most common wireless encryption-
standard, Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP),
has been shown to be easily breakable
even when correctly configured.

TOPOLOGY
Topology can be referred as a model of connections of
different wifi devices to other devices and sources.

    AP-based ( Infrastructure Mode )

    Peer to peer (Ad-hoc Mode)

    Point to multipoint bridge

AP-based Topology
The client communicate through Access Point.
BSA (Broad Band Signal Analyzers) - Radio
Frequency coverage provided by an AP.
ESA-It consists of 2 or more BSA.
ESA cell includes 10-15% overlap to allow
roaming.

 PRESENTATION ON WI-FI SLIDE - 12 OF 20
Peer to peer (Ad-hoc Mode)
AP is not required.
Client devices within a cell can communicate
directly with each other.
It is useful for setting up of a wireless network
quickly and easily.

Point to multipoint bridge
This is used to connect a LAN in one building to a
LANs in other buildings even if the buildings are
miles apart. These conditions receive a clear line of
sight between buildings.
The line-of-sight range varies based on the type of
wireless bridge and antenna used as well as the
environmental conditions.

WiFi HOTSPOTS
Physical location that offers internet access over
a wireless LAN
Found in coffee shops, hotels, airports etc.

These are two types- free and commercial
Free - Uses open public network , Wi-Fi router
required , No control on router
Commercial - Monthly or yearly subscription
required , Any mode of payment could be used ,
May allow free access to certain sites.

CONCLUSION
To conclude, it is really up to us to be responsible
for decisions using these devices. Even though we
have the luxury having no cords attached to all
these devices, we need to be careful. We need to
also keep the traditions of using regular books so
don’t forever loose paper books. It is important
we use this technology with respect without
getting too connected to these devices so we
don’t depend on them too much. This technology
is to help and not hurt us or loose other
important objects.
