2. The Chernobyl disaster
was a nuclear reactor
accident at the
Chernobyl Nuclear
Power Plant in Ukraine.
Chernobyl is the worst
nuclear power plant
disaster in history.
3. What happened…
• April 26th 1986
• 1:23 a.m.
• Pripyat, Ukraine
• 56 Direct Deaths
• 600,000 radiation exposure
• 4,000 cancer deaths
• 400 times more fallout then
bombs dropped in Hiroshima
4. How this happened…
On April 26th 1986 the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was conducting a
test that ended with an explosion of the No. 4 reactor. Operators had
allowed power levels to drop as part of a safety experiment, disabling
key mechanisms that would have shut the plant down if anything went
wrong.
No Lymphatic System
6. Today…
The Chernobyl reactor is now enclosed in a large concrete
structure.
200 tons of highly radioactive material remains
Habitation banned within 30km
The situation is just as bad now with cancer and leukemia as it was
in 1986
New Safe Confinement structure will be built by the end of 2011
Despite all of these negative consequences, the world may be
better off now that so much attention has been drawn to the
problem of mishandled nuclear projects
