Welcome, everyone, and thank you for coming. I hope you’re learning some useful tips today, and having a good time overall!I was asked to present today on social networking, and your social network, essentially preparing yourself to look good online, and connecting to the right people. As I go along, if you have any questions at all, please let me know.
Anyone know who this is?
This is Carly McKinney.
She was a high school teacher in Colorado.Until it was revealed that she had quite the Twitter presence. One that involved scantily clad photos of herself, and posts about smoking pot.
Then I did just some minimal poking about on Twitter and happened upon this non-URI library school student’s tweet.
And this one.
Then I found this post on Hack Library School. Anyone here read Hack Lib School?
I read the post and found this sentence: “I wondered if I should change my twitter handle from @lez_brarian to something safer and scrub my tweets of anything not strictly library related.”
My point of view? That’s not necessary.
Most library professionals would not be fazed by something like that. Post kitten pictures, shopping lists, etc. You are a person.
Your resume, cover letter, and online presence are all the search committee is likely to know about you.And if there’s a professional HR department or hiring manager, it’s even more likely you’ll be Googled, and perhaps have a background check as well.
