independent colleges and universities

• All accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools (SACS). Meet the same rigorous quality
standards as KY’s public colleges and universities.
• 33,000+ total students. 75% Kentucky residents.
• Provide critical choices and access to postsecondary
success. 70% of AIKCU students who graduate do so in
4 years.
• Fully committed to goals of 1997 House Bill 1 and
integrated in state postsecondary initiatives.
The 10th component of Kentucky’s
postsecondary education system
Diverse institutions...
• From Pikeville to Mayfield, Northern to
Southeastern Kentucky. Mix of traditional
campuses, extended sites, KCTCS and business
partnerships, and distance learning.
• Admissions standards range from open
admissions to highly selective.
• Diverse learning environments: traditional
residential campuses, distance learning,
community-based programs, KCTCS
partnerships, accelerated degree completion,
graduate programs.
• More than 6,000 total employees.
...serving diverse students...
• Geographic: 75% of the 33,000+ students are
Kentucky residents. Students from all 120
counties, across US, 108 countries.
• Age: 23% are adult students
• Racial: 10% of students are minorities (7.5%
African-American). Minority enrollments as high
as 30% on some campuses.
• Economic: 40% of undergraduates receive
federal Pell grants.
...and addressing diverse state needs
• Enroll 20% of KCTCS transfers.
• Produce 1/4 of new public school teachers
annually. 1/3 of teachers have at least one
credential from an AIKCU institution.
• Produce 20% of Kentucky bachelor’s degrees in
nursing.
• Produce 20% of all KY STEM bachelor’s degrees
(with no engineering programs)
• AIKCU percentage of KY bachelor’s degrees in select STEM areas
(2006-2008): 32% mathematics; 28% chemistry; 21% physics;
33% biology; 78% biochemistry

The Status of Kentucky's Independent (Nonprofit, Private) Colleges and Universities

  • 2. • 20 independent, nonprofit colleges and universities. • All accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Meet the same rigorous quality standards as KY’s public colleges and universities. • 33,000+ total students. 75% Kentucky residents. • Provide critical choices and access to postsecondary success. 70% of AIKCU students who graduate do so in 4 years. • Fully committed to goals of 1997 House Bill 1 and integrated in state postsecondary initiatives. The 10th component of Kentucky’s postsecondary education system
  • 3. Diverse institutions... • From Pikeville to Mayfield, Northern to Southeastern Kentucky. Mix of traditional campuses, extended sites, KCTCS and business partnerships, and distance learning. • Admissions standards range from open admissions to highly selective. • Diverse learning environments: traditional residential campuses, distance learning, community-based programs, KCTCS partnerships, accelerated degree completion, graduate programs. • More than 6,000 total employees.
  • 4. ...serving diverse students... • Geographic: 75% of the 33,000+ students are Kentucky residents. Students from all 120 counties, across US, 108 countries. • Age: 23% are adult students • Racial: 10% of students are minorities (7.5% African-American). Minority enrollments as high as 30% on some campuses. • Economic: 40% of undergraduates receive federal Pell grants.
  • 5. ...and addressing diverse state needs • Enroll 20% of KCTCS transfers. • Produce 1/4 of new public school teachers annually. 1/3 of teachers have at least one credential from an AIKCU institution. • Produce 20% of Kentucky bachelor’s degrees in nursing. • Produce 20% of all KY STEM bachelor’s degrees (with no engineering programs) • AIKCU percentage of KY bachelor’s degrees in select STEM areas (2006-2008): 32% mathematics; 28% chemistry; 21% physics; 33% biology; 78% biochemistry
