20. For instance, EAc1 with ASHRAE 90.1-2007 is a much more difficult base case threshold. 10% energy improvements are challenging.

22. LEED 2009 includes three major enhancements to the LEED rating system: harmonization, credit weightings, and regionalization. Harmonization: Credits and prerequisites from all LEED commercial and institutional rating systems have been consolidated and aligned… most effective common denominators, … consistent across all LEED 2009 rating systems. Necessary precedent-setting and clarifying information from Credit Interpretation Rulings (CIRs) were incorporated into the rating systems. LEED for Homes and LEED for Neighborhood Development will not be changed under LEED 2009. LEED 2009 HighlightsHarmonization
23. Credit weightings: …now have different weightings depending on their ability to impact different environmental and human health concerns. …LEED now awards more points for strategies that will have greater positive impacts on what matters most – energy efficiency and CO2 reductions. Each credit was evaluated against a list of 13 environmental impact categories, including climate change, indoor environmental quality, resource depletion and water intake, among many others. The impact categories were prioritized, … giving the most value to credits that have the highest potential for making the biggest change. The credits are all intact; they are just worth different amounts. As a result, LEED 2009 will operate on a 100-point scale. LEED 2009 HighlightsWeighting

LEED 2009 HighlightsWeighting Credit weightings tool: Download to learn all about what went into the weightings process (ZIP) »Examples: SSc4.1: The proximity of a building to public transportation allows for building occupants to utilize alternative transportation …. It affects a large component of the building’s environmental impact – its carbon footprint associated with transportation to and from the building. LEED for New Construction 2009 has increased the point value of this credit. WE Credit Category: Reduction in water use … While the impacts of these credits were primarily in water use, the benefits of water reduction are heavily emphasized in LEED for New Construction 2009. EAc2: Utilizing renewable energy for a building’s energy needs reduces the dependency on less environmentally sound energy sources, …

27. New in LEED 2009 Regionalization: Through USGBC’s regional councils, chapters and affiliates, regionally specific environmental issues were identified. For a project’s specific location, six LEED credits have been prioritized because they address the specific environmental issues. The project will be awarded up to four extra points (one point per credit) for earning the priority credits. 28. New in LEED 2009 LEED 2009 HighlightsRegional Priority Credits Examples from LEED for New Construction 2009: Urban Florida: SSc5.2, MRc1.1, WEc2, EAc1, MRc5, and EQc8.1, to incentivize (among other things) decreased reliance on fossil fuels, reuse of existing building stock, decreased reliance on insufficient municipal wastewater plants, and utilization of abundant local sunshine. Rural Michigan: SSc1, SSc6.1, SSc6.2, SSc8, MRc5.2, and EAc2, to incentivize (among other things) the preservation of prime agricultural land, reduction of light trespass into neighboring natural habitats, and minimizing the amount and improving the quality of stormwater into the Great Lakes.
36. THE Frequently Asked Questions I’m already a LEED AP. Do I need to retest to stay active? No. If you are already a LEED AP, you do not need to retest if you opt in within two years and satisfy the maintenance requirements. Reference CMP Enrollment Guide Valid for July 2009 for LEED APs without specialtyhttp://www.gbci.org/ShowFile.aspx?DocumentID=3666 How do I fit into the new tiered system as a current LEED AP? What do I need to do?
37. Starting August 3, 2009 GBCI will begin sending emails to existing LEED APs, letting them know that their enrollment window is open. They will have two years to enroll from the date noted in their email. Emails containing open enrollment windows will be staggered through October 2009 to ensure a smooth enrollment process. LEED APs without specialty can view their enrollment window through My Credentials on the GBCI website, www.gbci.org, beginning August 3, 2009. The schedule is alphabetically driven and will be posted on www.gbci.org to provide LEED APs with a sense of when their enrollment window will be open. During the enrollment window, LEED APs without specialty will have three options:
38. Do nothing - you will be designated a LEED AP without a specialty title in the LEED Professional Directory. Reference LEED APs Without Specialty and Enrollment FAQs http://www.gbci.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CMSPageID=110 Become a LEED AP+ by enrolling in the new tiered system – agree to the Credentialing Maintenance Program (CMP) and signing the Disciplinary Policy and completing the prescriptive CMP requirements for the initial 2-year reporting period. Once you have enrolled, you will use one of the new specialty designations (O&M, BD&C, ID&C) after your name. Enrollment must occur before June 2011.
39. Become a LEED AP+ by passing one of the new specialty exams - only part 2 of a LEED AP+ exam will be required if testing by June 2011. When applying for the exam you will need to sign the Disciplinary Policy and agree to CMP. You will need to complete the ongoing CMP for your designation and will use one of the new specialty designations (O&M, BD&C, ID&C) after your name.

I’m all about green building so we’re going to talk about LEED. You know you can’t talk about green building without talking about LEED – and you can’t talk about building energy efficiency or environmental performance without getting down into the LEED weeds, but I don’t want us to stay there. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big advocate of LEED despite its needs for better cultivation. We will learn about the new LEED v3, but first I want to tell you a story – kind of a school of hard knocks story - about one of my most important on the job learning experiences a few years ago.
LEED v3 is needed for three very important reasons…v3 is still untested for the most part. Only a very few firms have yet registered projects.
We’ll touch on these points. First we’ll look at LEED v3 … Then we’ll look at LEED and green building in this challenging marketplaceThis is an amazing time right now as people everywhere are focused on saving money – for the first time since the Carter Administration – energy savings is a central conversation. Our professions bring a lot more broad expertise about building science than we had in 1980 and building technologies have advanced dramatically. Green building is a great story right now!So what is LEED v3 all about? Is it a dramatic upgrade? I’ll be interested in your views later on.
Here is USGBC’s timeline with some just released updates…All this coincides with the creation of a new entity in the mix: the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI)LEED programs under development include:LEED for Neighborhood Development, Pilot (closed)LEED Portfolio Program, Pilot (closed)LEED for Healthcare, first comment period (closed)LEED for Retail, Pilot (in process)SPRING 2009LEED Green Associate Exam – Launch (May)LEED AP+ Operations & Maintenance Exam – Launch (May)LEED AP+ Building Design & Construction Exam – Beta TestLEED AP+ Interior Design & Construction Exam - Beta TestNew Candidate Application AvailableSUMMER 2009LEED AP+ Homes Exam - LaunchLEED AP+ Building Design & Construction - LaunchLEED AP+ Interior Design & Construction - LaunchNew Credentialing Maintenance Program – Launch2010LEED AP+ Neighborhood Development
GBCI was created to …There are over 17,000 registered projects. GBCI is committed to a faster, high quality certification process. GBCI contracts with 3rd party “certification bodies” to handle the workload and absorb the continuous explosive growth.
The profession is just getting to know LEED 2009 … Some initial impressions:The v3 emphasis on site, WE, EE and regional priorities improves in house awareness. We will start v3 Green Assoc classes in house within a month. Criticisms you may have heard from a prominent speaker “Why LEED Buildings Use More Energy and How You Can Avoid The Same Mistakes.”It is that LEED doesn’t require actual energy performance improvements – only predicted ones. LEED 2009 fixes that but introduces an additional complication that may be difficult for clients to commit to.
Prerequisites and credits have been made consistent across all 2009 rating systems.
Here are the high level changes from LEED 2.2 …You will want to go through the primers from USGBC and get your new Reference Guides to get a full understanding. And the new Regional Priority Credits Have you been wondering how they work?
Read SlideDownload xls for your state and then reference by the zip code of your site
For more information on how the Central Plains credits were established just email me any specific questions and I will sign you up for the Regional Credit committee.
Regional Priority Credits work similarly to ID Exemplary Performance. They are an additional point (up to 4 points) for achieving an RPC designated for the zip code of the project. For instance the RPCs here at the Discovery Center areZip code 64110 and the mid town SSc4 Alternative TransportationSSc7.2 Heat Island EffectWEc2 (30%) Innovative Waste Water TechnologiesWEc3 (75%) Water Use ReductionEAc1(79 rating/29 percentile) Optimize Energy EfficiencyMRc6 Rapidly Renewable MaterialsLet’s go now to the new LEED Online
LEED Online version 3 is available only for those projects registered under LEED 2009. The new version of LEED Online, they say, is faster, smarter and a better user experience. It is designed to be scalable and more robust, through improved design, a more intuitive user interface, and is upgraded for the LEED 2009.
