2. ISO 14000 Family of Standards
ISO 14000 is a series of standards developed by ISO to
provide businesses with a structure for managing
environmental impacts
ISO 14000 environmental standards help organizations
manage their environmental requirements and tie them into
their overall business objectives

3. ISO 14000 Family of Standards
There were twenty four (24) ISO 14000 standards in
existence but these standards fall into six categories;
1. Environmental management systems
2. Environmental auditing
3. Environmental performance evaluation
4. Environmental labeling
5. Life cycle assessment
6. Environmental aspects in product standards

4. Note:
Organizations do not register to ISO
14000 as a series, but they will help an
organization implement an EMS, audit
properly, but ONLY register to ISO
14001:2004.

A generic model for an environmental
management system for an organization.
Tool that will provide companies with a
method to systematically manage their
environmental activities, products and
services that eventually affect the
conditions and quality of Flora, Fauna,
Water and Air

9. EMS – ISO 14001
The EMS does not establish additional
environmental compliance requirements or any
performance levels but provides instead the
framework for a company to meet the
environmental goals and objectives that it sets for
itself
The EMS does not prescribes additional
environmental protection but does provide a
structure to protect the environment in a reliable
and consistent manner and offers a tool for an
organization to go beyond compliance.

2. Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) is
specifically tasked to implement, recommend,
and provide technical assistance for their
implementation and monitoring

An organization may be
Self-certified
Third-party certified

14. Potential Benefits and Implications
Company with an ISO 14001 certification will
have a strong competitive advantage in the
international and national marketplace
Environmental trade barriers will be reduced to
facilitate trade
An enhance public image, demonstration of
environmental commitment, and improved
environment recognitions of products will
accompany ISO 14001 certification.

15. Potential Benefits and Implications
The EMS will undoubtedly lead to the
implementation of more efficient and cost saving
pollution prevention projects, reduction in
potential liabilities, potentially lower insurance
premiums, more favorable lending status, a shift
toward more pro active and international
strategies and greater personnel awareness and
involvement in multimedia environment-related
issues

16. Potential Benefits and Implications
Regulatory flexibility for companies that are third
party certified is being considered by federal and
state regulatory programs.
The ISO 14001 standard is consistent with
governmental policies on compliance assurance
systems.
US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and
some states have also included EMS
requirements in some settlement and consent
orders.
