2. What is the Endocrine System?
 Glands that maintain homeostasis in body
by secreting hormones
 Two types of endocrine glands
 Exocrine glands: Release hormones into
ducts that carries them out of the body
 Endocrine glands: Release hormones
directly into the bloodstream

3. Importance of Homeostasis
 Homeostasis is how the body maintains a
constant environment
 Hormones can help regulate the body
 If there is an imbalance in hormone
production there can be drastic changes
to the body

4. Symptoms of Disrupted
Homeostasis
 Acromegaly
 dwarfism
 Goiter
 Heart failure
 Hyperkalemia
 Hypercalcemia
 Hypoatremia
 Polyuria
 Etc.

5. Polyuria
 The condition of excessive urination
 Associated with hyposecretion of
antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
 ADH is a hormone released from the
posterior pituitary gland and promotes
water reabsorption in the kidneys
 A lack of ADH will increase urine/water
output

6. Hypercalcemia
 A condition of having high levels of
calcium in the blood
 Associated with hypersecretion of
parathyroid hormone (PTH)
 PTH is secreted from the parathyroid gland
and regulates calcium concentration in the
blood
 An increase in PTH will increase the amount
of calcium in the blood
