A verb is a word that is used to express an action, a condition, or a state
of being.
There are THREE types of verbs: action, linking, helping
Action Verbs tell what the subject does. The action can be physical
(climbing) or mental (knowing).
EX King Kong stomps through the streets of New York.
EX Everyone fears King Kong.
EX Kong loves Anne.
Linking Verbs link the subject to a word in the predicate (the verb in
the sentence and everything else that follows).
Form of be: is, am, are, was, were, been, being
Express condition: appear, become, feel, grow, look,
remain, seem, smell, sound, taste
EXKing Kong seems angry.
EXHe is a huge gorilla.
Some verbs can serve as linking or action.
EX Kong looks at Anne. She looks frightened.

Helping Verbs help main verbs (action or linking) express meaning.

others: could, should, would, may, might, must, can, shall, will
The combination of one or more helping verbs with a main verb is called
a verb phrase. HV+MV=VP
EXWe have watched the movie King Kong four times.

Helping verbs come before the main verb.
Helping verbs can act as a main verb in some sentences.
