- In April, 1993, Henry McMonagle requested permission to survey the community to determine if there would be interest in the formation of a Yavapai College Institute for Learning in Retirement, an ILR. If the survey proved favorable, Elderhostel agreed to put up $2000 for start up costs.
- On July 28th 1993, at Yavapai Performance Hall, a meeting of 175 local people gathered to hear about the concept of a retirement learning group. Henry Lippman, a spokesman for ILR’s came from New York to speak at the meeting.
- After committees were formed to develop a conceptual plan for facilities, sessions, governance, feeds, etc, the college granted approval for the formation of an ILR in December of 1993. Ed Cornett was a member of the original steering committee.

- By 1996, we were starting each fall term with a kick-off coffee, which in years to come expanded to a kick-off lunch and then to a kick-off party. The purpose has always been the same, to get started on our wonderful fall class line up.
- By 1997 our Governing Council Chair was Walt Bull, Vice Chair was Andy Reti, Financial Officer, Roy Leroux, and Secretary was Pat Beaugrand. If you recognize more and more of these names, it’s because so many of our members have been active for many, many years.
- In 1999, the YLI Newsletter announced that we had increased our membership to 217 people, a growth rate of 72% over the previous year. And probably our largest % increase in our history. Shirley Purcell was Curriculum Chair, and she and her committee offered 23 learning groups and 2 field trips.
- In 2000 some thought about a name change, and suggestions included Methuselah’s Learning Institute, Learning for the Chronologically Enhanced and Learning for Fossils. We decided, in our infinite wisdom, to stay with Yavapai Learning Institute which made us Ylites.
- For the Love of Learning was our new slogan developed by Dave Warner, and it is still in use today.
- In 2004, we received a grant from the Osher Foundation and the Osher Endowment in 2007. These additional funds allowed us to expand our services, our administrative staff, & our schedule of classes. The money has made growth easier. And with the help of the Osher funding, we have raised our membership fees only three times in our history -- definitely below the general rate of inflation.
- We made one major change when we received the Osher funding. We were no longer the Yavapai Learning Institute, but became the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Guess we could handle that!
- Our staff has evolved and grown over the years
- Anticipating change and growth, we held a Long-range Planning Meeting which was heavily attended. Literally thousands of ideas came out of that meeting, many of which we are still working on.
- In the spring of 2006, Lesley Schuler gave us the wonderful new look that you will all recognize as our schedule, a very classy publication which comes out 5 times a year.
- As we welcome new members, we also have to say goodbye to some of our long time contributing members. Some of those we have lost in recent years: Eve Wynant Jeanne Toor Albert Lovejoy Dick McCord John Riley Bert Wilson They and the other members we have lost are missed!
