 All good thesis statements present a topic that is

arguable.
 One type of thesis statement is a thesis that lists

points.
 A thesis statement that lists points previews the

ideas supported in the upcoming body paragraphs.
Determining a Stance
 When drafting the thesis statement, determine the

overall stance you want to take on the topic and then
the supporting arguments for such an argument.
 Argument explored: Should school uniforms be

required?

Parallel Structure

 Next, using parallel structure, combine the three

sub-topics into one sentence.
 Parallel structure lists items and uses words and

phrases that end similarly. For instance, if a list of
words uses the –ing form of a word, all words in the
list use the –ing form.
Examples of Parallel Structure
 Non-Parallel Structure: Activities where students write,

are multiplying, and label ensure more effective mastery of a
topic.
 Parallel Structure: Activities using writing, multiplying,
and labeling ensure more effective mastery of a topic.

 Non-Parallel Structure: Negative public feedback should

never be issued because it is offensive, unnecessary, and
makes everyone depressed.

Thesis Statement with Listed Points

 Finally, in your body paragraphs, you will write at least

one paragraph on each of the sub-topics mentioned in
the three-part thesis statement so that your thesis
statement is well-supported.
