This presentation deals with the problem of efficient and correct implementation of Accessible Rich Internet Application (ARIA) recommendation into user interface component during rich internet application development process. A new methodology is presented, which is based on testing the accessibility on real-life web applications with help of experienced blind users. Three Web Toolkits were evaluated by this method and serious accessibility issues were found. This new approach was then used to implement ARIA recommendation into one open source Web Toolkit.

This presentation outlines the findings of two surveys that were conducted throughout Europe by two FP7 projects (ÆGIS and ACCESSIBLE), addressing the specific needs for AT ICT (Assistive Technologies for ICT applications) and accessibility in the area of desktop, web and mobile accessibility, while also understanding the needs of the developing community with regards to assessment and simulation tools to enable them in ensuring their developed applications are accessible to an as wide as possible audience. Based on the collected data, a large number of commonalities were pinpointed across all targeted user groups in all countries where the survey was conducted. As a next step to support a fully user centred design within the projects, a whole range of personas were defined, depicting people with disabilities in a variety of (working) environments. The presented findings are at present being used for the development of open source assistive technologies, development, assessment and simulation tools to support accessibility for desktop, mobile, web and rich internet applications.

During the last 10 to 15 years the use of graphic symbols to support literacy development and access to text content has become increasingly widespread in special needs education and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) practices. This popularity is founded on a growing body of positive experience and research studies. It is also accompanied by the availability and use of a widening range of educational software tools (such as the Widgit_Communicate:-series, Clicker, BoardMaker-Speaking Dynamically Pro, and EdWord). But why should these methods and resources remain in the confined domain of special needs education? As part of the ÆGIS project, graphic symbol support for access to text is developed for the standard and open source office suite OpenOffice.org (OO.org). This task is a part of the ÆGIS ambition to include people with cognitive difficulties in the efforts towards more general accessibility in standard ICT environments. The graphic symbol support will be developed as a plug-in extension primarily for Writer in OO.org, and will build on the Concept Coding Framework (CCF) I suggested open standard for multimodal language support defined in the WWAAC project, and further developed within the SYMBERED and ÆGIS projects. When the user enters text – by ordinary letter-by-letter typing or by selecting and entering whole words (provided by Assistive Technology tools) – or loads a file, contained words will be matched against a concept database. Graphic symbol representations will be offered according to the user’s preferences, ranging from inline parallel text + symbol representation, using the Ruby Annotation format, to a word lookup service. The graphic symbol support will be integrated with the improved Text-to- Speech (TTS)I support within OO.orgI that will also be addressed in one of the ÆGIS tasks. Functionality will be evaluated and refined in three rounds of user pilot resting within ÆGIS.

The Language Server Protocol in a popular IDE-independent and Language-independent interface to provide and consume language edition services - such as code analysis, completion, hyperlinking... It basically lets the language providers implement the protocol as a server, and the IDEs consume the protocol as a client to have the IDEs presenting the language-specific data without having to know about the language. This protocol already has multiple successful stories. In this talk we’ll demonstrate: * How a C# language server can be used in Eclipse IDE (thanks to LSP4E) to provide rich C# edition capabilities * How a Java language server implemented on top of JDT is integrated into VSCode to have VSCode supporting rich Java edition capabilities * How you can easily write a language server in Java (with LSP4J) and plug it into Eclipse IDE (with LSP4E) and VSCode and demonstrate how easy it becomes to ship additional features for your language in all tools at once.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
