The Great Smartie Problem
By Miss Dunsiger and Mrs. Howe
Mrs. Howe and Miss Dunsiger are good friends. They teach
right beside each other, and they love to talk and plan
together. They also love to have their snacks together too.
One day, Mrs. Howe brought in a special snack to share with Miss
Dunsiger. She brought in some Valentine's Day Smarties.
Some of the Smarties were white ones, and some of the Smarties
were red ones. Mrs. Howe brought in two heart-shaped buckets to
hold this special treat.
One heart-shaped bucket had 10 Smarties: some were white
Smarties and some were red Smarties.
The other heart-shaped bucket had 4 white Smarties and 2 red
Smarties.
Mrs. Howe is always fair. She wanted to make sure that both heart-
shaped buckets had the same number of Smarties.

What could she do to make sure that each heart-shaped bucket has
the same number of Smarties?
