1. Web 2.0 Challenges
for Appraisal
Modern Archives Institute
v 2.0 May 2009
2. Web 2.0 is:
A second generation of design for websites
Facilitating communication and collaboration
among individuals and content creators
Rise of social networks
5. Instant Messaging (IM)
IM is the act of instantly communicating
between two or more people over a network –
such as the Internet;
Requires the use of a client program that
establishes a connection;
Different than email – allows real-time
conversation. Services offer a “presence” feature
to indicate if people on contact lists are available.
6. Instant Messaging
Adoption in corporate world – less intrusive
than telephone:
“We send 2.5 million IMs within IBM each day.
And we have virtually zero voice mails here.”
David Marshak, senior product manager for
collaboration at IBM quoted in New York Times,
April 5, 2006.
7. Instant Messaging
SEC rule 17a-4 requires that exchange members, brokers,
and dealers must retain all communications sent or
received for a period of 2 years in a readily-available
form and then an additional 6 years. Applicable to IM.
Leading to the development of solutions to assist with
capture and “archiving” of IM.
IM clients may have the ability to preserve messages in
“history” files. Locations (directory) and size of file vary
from client to client.

Web Portals

RSS allows frequent users to receive content by
using aggregators.
Used for many activities: marketing, bug-
reporting, news updates, replaces email.
13. Blogs
Generally a series of articles/postings in reverse
chronological order (with or without comments)
Posting via a form with title, body, and link to
article (increasingly content in the body… not
linked)
Automatic posting with date, category
Can contain text, video, images and text linking
to audio.
20. Wikis
Wiki brings together a "community of interest" around a
simple web content management application to post and
edit web content.
Unlike blogs, anyone can edit content.
Each change is saved so that postings can be compared.
More than any other of the applications, a wiki promotes
direct and active participation by a distributed network
of collaborators.
Random Fact: Wiki is Hawaiian for “Fast.”
21. Wikis contain Records?
SE Asia Tsunami 2005: global ad hoc emergency
response providing information about survivors and
coordinating relief needs.
