2. This is a stand trying to
sell a new TV and I think
that it is good as
although it is only a
poster on a wall for most
of it the text tries to
make the product
exclusive as it uses words
like experience as if to
say that you aren't going
to sit on the sofa
watching a film on it you
will be having an
adventure and an
experience that you
wont forget. There is also
a thumbs up symbol
which tries to make you
feel like the product is
good and in one of the
hands there is the
remote for it. So you can
try out the TV and flick
through the channels
and see the quality of
the TV for yourself with
your own eyes.
This has watches
that are made by
Mont Blonc and look
very expensive and
are laid out well as
there are a lot of the
watches on display
but the window
doesn't look
cluttered and full as
the watches are
spaced out and
grouped together.
There is also one
watch in the middle
that could be the
most expensive one
as the whole display
is centralised around
it. The colour
scheme of the back
of the stand is good
as Mont Blonc also
make pens which are
usually black and
sometimes have
streaks of silver
metal in them.
This is in a cup cake
stand and it catches
your eye with the
bright pink stripes and
the colour scheme of
the stripes look like
the ones you would
find in a fairground
when you buy a bag of
sweets. Also there is a
giant cupcake that
could make you think
that you are getting
more than you are or
make the cup cakes
look better but the big
cup cake defiantly
catches your eye and
draws you to the stall.
This is a sweet stall
that is trying to sell
lots of different types
of sweets. The sweets
are lots of different
colours that catch
your eye. The stall is
also in the middle of
the walkway so any
one can see it. A
mother and her child
could walk past and it
would catch the
child's eye and the
child might want one
and would try to get
its parent to buy some
sweets for them. It
also doesn't need
someone to be
standing there to sell
the sweets it can be
unmanned so that any
one can come and use
it without the risk of
them stealing the
sweets.
3. This is trying to sell some
children's shoes and they
have done it by placing
the shoes on cardboard
boxes and stacking the
boxes up on each other.
The prices for the shoes
are also easy to see so you
can see if they are a price
that you would like to buy
them at or if you want to
shop around some more
before you buy them. The
units them self are easily
replaceable as they are
cardboard so you can take
them out and replace the
box when a new shoe
comes out. The boxes can
also be easily recycled as
well. The boxes would also
give you more freedom on
how to display the product
as they can easily be
moved about into
different places and
positions.
This is trying to sell
chocolate bars and the
chocolate bars are on a
cardboard shelf that is
easy to replace or change
as it wouldn't weigh much
and it can be folded flat
for transport. The self is
easily replaceable as the
unit is advertising a special
offer that could not be
around for long so that
could be why they have
used something like
cardboard which is more
temporary and can be
changed easily. The
shelves can also be easily
recycled as well. The fact
that it is made out of
cardboard means that you
can colour it easily and
make it the company's
colours so that before you
even read it you know
what brand it is.
This is good as it is very
space efficient and is good
for what its trying to sell as
there are a lot of glasses on
show but they aren't huge
designer brands they are
fairly cheap and are for
people who need glasses
and don't want to spend
lots of money on
something that they need
and will use on a daily
basis. The glasses are also
neatly arranged in columns
of there price with mirrors
in between so that when
you try them on you can
see what you look like with
them on and if they suit
you. There is also a chart
down the side so you can
see if they come in
different sizes and if you
want to add things to them
or replace parts of them
because you might need
bigger frames or something
along those lines.
This is trying to sell a range of
grooming and cleaning
products. The products look
good as they are in metal
buckets that are a very old
style and look like an old
Victorian bath that has been
scaled down. The soaps are
in very big containers that
look like they could last a
long time but they are also
raised up in the buckets so
you might think that the
containers are sitting on the
base of the bucket but there
on a raised platform that
makes them look bigger than
they are and that you are
getting more for your money.
There isn't a price tag in the
whole display so when you
look at it you have no idea
what they might cost. The
bucket in the middle of the
stand is bigger than the other
two and so are the
containers inside the bucket
which means they could be
available in different sizes.
4. This is trying to sell
perfume and it is in the
shop window and there
are groups of perfumes
together on each shelf
being advertised
together and they are all
on special offer but only
if you buy the complete
set for the products on
the top shelf which
encourages you to
spend more and buy
them all. The prices and
the offers are in bold
but the rest of the text is
smaller so it tries to get
your attention to the
price and make you
think that it is a great
offer and that you need
to buy it now. They have
also arranged them so
that the best deal is at
eye level so you are
most likely to buy it and
go into the shop.
This is trying to sell a Play
Station 3 and some games
for it. The Play Station
isn't on display only the
box is which is the same
for all the games as the
disks are not in the cases
they are all empty. The
design of the stand is very
basic as there isn't really
much going on there is
only the box for the Play
Station to advertise it and
all the prices for the
games and consoles are
written on the boxes or
cases which means that
you can easily replace the
games if a new one comes
out as there isn't really
much to do with the
shelves there is no
advertising on them at all
they only hold the games
and consoles. It looks like
each console has its own
special deal and that you
could buy it with different
games to save money.
I think that this P.O.S. unit
is good as it has there
range of products on show
for you to see them and
compare them with each
over. There is a TV screen
which is playing a music
video and the headphones
are also plugged in so that
you can put them on and
listen to the music and
compare the sound quality
of the headphones. The
prices for each headphone
are underneath the stand
that they are displayed on
so you can easily compare
the prices as well easily.
The box for the products
are also on a shelf above
which means that if you
do want to buy the
product you can pick up
the box and take it strait
to the till instead of asking
for it and waiting ages for
someone to go and get it
from the stock at the back
of the shop.
I think that this P.O.S. unit
is good as it has there
range of products on
show from the company
and you can see them
and compare them with
each over. The prices for
each ereader are next to
them so that they are
easy to see and compare.
The box for the products
are also on a shelf bellow
which means that if you
do want to buy the
product you can pick up
the box and take it strait
to the till instead of
asking for it and waiting
ages for someone to go
and get it from the stock
at the back of the shop.
The product also can be
set up in store for you if
you aren't very good at
doing things on your
computer and this service
is advertised in big text in
the middle of the stand.
5. This is trying to sell a
new range of
clothing and the
manikin looks like it
has been specially
made for the range
as there is a slogan
that says blown away
and the hair of the
manikin is stretched
and looks like it is
blowing in the wind.
There is also a TV
screen that is
showing an advert
for the range and a
cat walk with people
wearing cloths from
the range which
could convince you
to buy it if you see
some very attractive
people wearing the
cloths and then you
think that you could
look that good if you
bought the clothes.
This is trying to sell
perfume and the product
is very expensive as there
is a huge stand with the
bottle encased in glass so
you cant touch it. There is
also a huge poster that
covers the entire wall of
the shop. The poster is
very simple it just has a
slogan the name of the
perfume and then a very
good looking woman
standing with a city
behind her and there are
lots of lights and it is night
time which makes you
feel like she is important
and she is standing on top
of a skyscraper in a huge
city. Part of the picture is
also wrapped around the
stand that the perfume is
locked in and there is the
company name at the top
of the box directly above
the perfume.
This is trying to sell books
and the books are on a
cardboard shelf that is
easy to replace or change
as it wouldn't weigh
much and it can be
folded flat for transport.
The self is easily
replaceable as the unit is
advertising a special
offer that could not be
around for long so that
could be why they have
used something like
cardboard which is more
temporary and can be
changed easily. The
shelves can also be easily
recycled as well. The fact
that it is made out of
cardboard means that
you can colour it easily
and make say what you
want it to so that you can
write the latest offer for
the product clearly and
easily.
Summary
I have learnt from the point of sale units that I have researched and seen as most of
them are cheaply made and made from cheap materials such as cardboard or cheap
plastics such as acrylic. The ones that are interactive are clearly interactive and you
can easily see what you have to do or what you can do with the product. As there is
a stand with a bunch of E-readers and the stand is right in the middle of the shop
next to the elevators so as soon as you go upstairs you see the product and you can
have a look at it and see what it can do and if you like it and if you want to find out
more about it. The P.O.S. units are also relevant to the product as the P.O.S. Units
are representing the product they are displaying and they need to display them
correctly and represent them well so people get the right impression of the product
and the right customers are targeted and the wrong ones aren't bothered buy it and
don't waste there time with it as the product isn't for them so all they would do with
the product is waste there time with it as it isn't for them and all that will happen is
they get disappointed with it and want there money back and possibly put people of
buying the product and saying that as it wasted there time that it is a waste of time
for everyone. Also the P.O.S. Unit has to display clearly what the product is as
otherwise you wouldn't actually know what it is displaying. The P.O.S. unit should
also display the brand name or be in the theme or colours of the brand so that it is
clear what the brand is so that when the customers go home they can research the
brand or the product if they didn't buy it in the shop so they could find out more
about the brands.
6.
7.
8. Mr Natty is for men who care about what they look like and care about what
they use to look good. The target audience isn't just the older man with a
moustache and facial hair as they do a wide range of hair products that can be
used to create some very unique styles that most products wouldn't be able to
compete with as they just wouldn't work and hair would collapse and the style
would fail and have to be touched up constantly in order for it to keep its shape.
Old Spice was for the older man but they changed there target audience to
younger men who might aspire to own a boat or have some of the things that are
used in the adverts such as a boat or a motorbike. Even though they have tried to
encourage people of a younger audience to buy and wear there products the
majority of people still see it as a product for old men that they would probably
not buy or use as they might not like the smell or still believe that it is for old men.
Lynx's target audience are teenagers who have probably just started secondary
school and think that the brand is cool and gets girls as there whole advertising
campaign revolves around women falling in love with men who wear lynx. They
use men in there adverts who wouldn't probably use lynx but the younger
audience who do buy it would aspire to be like them so that could be why they
buy it and want to wear it.
Fish Soho have an unusual brand as they started as a barbers and did some very
unique haircuts and then they released a range of grooming products but the two
are very strange as they are not really the same as although they are the same
company it is almost like it has split into two as the grooming products range uses
colours and styles that don't mach the original company at all as they are
completely different.
Hackett London is a brand that aims to sell to people who have just got into the
city and are starting of a career that is going to earn them a lot of money and
they sell clothing and aftershave that is cheap compared to most suits but still
fairly expensive. There targeting people who would love to be like the
experienced people that they see walking into the office but cant afford the
clothes and aftershave that they use so settle for something cheaper as a
starting block.
L’Oreal Men Expert target older men who know that they are getting old but want
to look youngest whilst still keeping there sophisticated look that makes them
look professional. You can tell this by looking at there range of products as most
are to do with getting rid of grey hairs and looking younger but there is a point
where people stop using the product because they realize that they are too old to
try to hide it.
9. Mr Natty is for men who aren't usually that old and maybe still in there twenties but would like a good quality product to style there
hair with. Usually people who use Mr Natty hair products have a very unique look that they are aiming to achieve. The company was
formed because the creator of the company (Matt Raine) was tired of boring products that had no background and hardly worked. He
created his company and gave it a traditional past that he thought gave the company a background and some style. The products he has
made are all for male grooming. Even though he has made a whole line of moustache and facial hair products people with facial hair
aren't the only target buyers that Mr Natty are trying to get as he said that young people like a product with a traditional past and love
the look that Mr Natty has achieved.
Mr Natty was created by a man who experienced the fashion industry first hand and worked on cat walks across the globe as a barber
and hair stylist and he was using product after product to find one that held hair the way he needed it to , to keep the style but none of
them did so he decided to start his own business and make his own products that would do exactly what he wanted to and they would
actually do it and not completely fail and not be able to hold the style for longer than five minutes.
Matt (the creator of Mr Natty) didn't want to give up a he was disappointed by the sheer amount of produces that didn't work and he
wanted to put and end to it so he started small and worked his way up until now he owns a business that is doing very well and has
people working for him to make new produces and create the best adverts for them and make the product stand out and feel like a
premium product that works amazingly well and that if you want to create a unique style that you should be using Mr Natty and
nothing else as it is the best product you could dream of as it does its job amazingly well.
10. Task Analysis
Manufacture
The stand should be easy to manufacture and be
cheap to manufacture. If the stand came ready made
to the shop that would make the display easier to set
up in the shop but could be inefficient when it is
being transported to the shop which could mean
more lorries and vans are needed to distribute the
stands to all the shops that require them.
Size
the size of the stand will be big enough to stand
out in a shop and catch peoples attention and
draw them to the product over the other products
in the shop.
Material
The material should be aesthetically pleasing and
make the product look better by using a material that
matches or suits the product so that you can clearly
see the relation between it and the product.
Aesthetics/themes
The themes should match or be similar to the
ones used in the product or the company colours
so that when you see the stand you look at the
colour and automatically recognise the brand.
The style of the stand should also be relevant to
the company as if the company was created
through aviation it would make no sense to have
an image of a car as there background came from
flying and planes.
Environment
The stand should be in clear sight at eye level so that
when you walk in the shop you can easily see it and
there is no excuse for not seeing it. If it was a busy
shop somewhere near the queue would be a good
place to put the stand as people would be waiting to
buy something and they could see it and think that
they might as well get it as well. It could also be put in
the shop window so people walking past the shop are
encouraged to go in the shop and investigate the
product.
Safety
If the stand is interactive it should be safe so
that customers who want to use or test it won't
injure themselves when they try to.
User friendly
It should be easy to understand as if the stand is
complicated and hard to use than people wont
try to work it out as most of the people who are
testing out the product probably don't know
how it works and what they need to do.
Functions
The stand should be easy to use and do what its
supposed to easily and well so that if it is used
incorrectly it wont break and need to be taken
away from the shop floor to be fixed or
replaced.
Ergonomic
The stand should look like it has been made for a
human being and if it has been designed to be held
in someone's hand it should fit well into there
hand comfortably. If it wants you to listen to music
the headphones should be comfortable and have a
long lead.
Cost
The cost of the stand should be fairly cheap and
reasonable so that if you want to put them up in
lots of shops at the same time it wont cost more
than it will earn you. Also if it isn't expensive that
means it can be replaced easier if it is broken.
Future/recycled/altered
If it can be altered for later editions it would save
money resources and be better for the
environment this would also be the case if the
stand could be easily recycled which would be
the case if it was made out of cardboard.
Purpose
The purpose should be to catch the attention of
potential customers and convince them that your
product is the best at what it does and that it the
potential buyer should buy it.
Position of product
The product should be in plain sight in the stand
so that it is the main thing that you see so that
you know what you are buying and what it looks
like so you can determine if you even like what
it looks like.
Social media
If the product is out there on the internet and can
easily be researched that means that people would
more likely to go and find out more about the
product and could like it even more and be
convinced to buy it.
Brief:
Design a new point of sale display unit for a male grooming company. The unit must display at least 1 product from their range and must clearly identify the brand. Possible brands are Old
Spice, Fish, L’Oreal Men Expert, Mr Natty, Lynx and Hackett.
Brand:
Mr Natty
Problem:
The problem with Mr Natty is that you can only buy it online and that isn't available in shops so the point of sale unit would promote the fact that Mr Natty is now available in shops.
Situation
11. LINKS FX
Logical
It would be logical to put the
brand name and the product
name on the P.O.S. So that
people know what they are
looking and if they want to
research it when they get
home they know that to type
as otherwise it would be
difficult. The product should
also be on display so that
people know what it looks like
so they can shop around and
see if its cheaper somewhere
else. If the product is
reasonably priced than the
price should be advertised to
try and promote it more as
some people might see it as a
bargain.
It should be remote and away
from other fragrance stands
as the smells mix together
and you cant tell what the
product smells like. The
colour scheme of the P.O.S.
Should be the same as the
colour scheme of the
company. The size of the
P.O.S. Should be relative to
the size of the product as
there is no point in having a
huge unit that fills up an isle
just for one tin or can of the
product. The P.O.S. Should
tell the truth and be honest
about the product so people
are not being lied to and
know the truth about what
they are buying.
Illogical
It is illogical to put products
that you test by smelling next
to each other as the smells
will mix and you wont know
what you are smelling and
what it actually smells like.
Unless you are going to make
a huge amount of money
from it there is no point in
giving away samples for free.
It is illogical to charge less
than the product cost to
make as you are loosing
money and unless you are
earning more in another
branch of the brand. If the
unit is interactive it shouldn't
give to much of the product
away it should be like a demo
and not a trial as a trial gives
you full access to the product
for a small amount of time
where as a demo give you a
small part of the product and
tells you about the rest so you
want more and buy the full
product whereas a trial could
be risky as people could play
the full game and get bored of
it. The unit should be built
well so if it is misused it
doesn't break as easily and
can stand up to abuse. This
means that it wont get
broken and need to be
removed from the shop in
order to be repaired or
replaced which means that
people wont see it and it
wont be doing its job.
Need
The P.O.S. Must have the
name of the brand on it so
that people see it and
immediately know what the
brand is. The name of the
product must also be on the
unit so that people know
what it is and when they get
home they can research it and
find out some information
about the product. The
company colours should also
be used as that way from
across the shop when you
cant even read what the
company is you can recognise
the colours and tell what the
brand is. The P.O.S. Should
also attract the attention of
potential customers as
otherwise it isn't doing its job
which is to attract attention
to the product and convince
people to buy it and that it is
the best at what they do. The
unit must be safe as if it is
interactive then people
should not be in danger when
they are using it as it should
promote the product and if
someone walks away from
the unit in pain then they are
less likely to buy the product
that they were initially
interested in. The product
must also be secured in the
stand and should not be easy
to steal and run away with as
then you would be losing
money.
Keep
The P.O.S. Unit should keep
the original traditional theme
of the brand somewhere in it
but preferably the whole
thing this would help people
recognise the brand and
product that it is displaying. If
the product doesn't keep the
original theme of the brand
then the P.O.S. Should
incorporate the new theme
but still use some of the old
theme as this way it will be
easy to recognise if you are
standing a fair bit away from
the P.O.S. Unit and cant read
the text or writing that could
be on it. As well as the theme
the type of materials should
also be kept fairly similar to
those of the brand as then
the products would tie in
together and you could also
advertise them as a range of
products and put them all on
show together which could
encourage people to buy
more of the products and
spend more money. It would
be harder to tie all of the
products together if they all
had separate themes and
styles and if you tried to it
could look messy and it
wouldn't work very well as
then it could become
cluttered and people would
not be as convinced to buy
the products.
Scrap
Good quality materials should
be used in the P.O.S. This way
it will look good and it could
potentially be used again after
the product is outdated and a
new one is released. If
materials such as wood and
metal are used that means
that they can be recycled and
not thrown away into a scrap
pile or a land fill site
somewhere. If you want the
product to come across as a
premium product materials
such as cardboard shouldn't
be used as they are very
unattractive and are usually
used for cheap products such
as posters and generally
products that are made out of
paper or card. There shouldn't
be any excess materials used
that have no point as they
would be a waste of money
and resources. If the P.O.S.
Unit looks like it was made
cheaply and that it isn't made
to a good standard people
might think that it is the same
for the product and that could
be made cheaply as well so
the P.O.S. Unit represents the
product it is displaying and
shouldn't make the product
look bad as it would then be
doing the opposite of what it
is supposed to.
Form Vs Function
The P.O.S. Should ideally look
great and work well as that
would make it the most
effective. It should look better
that it works as the main aim
is to get peoples attention
and stand out and catch
peoples attention and draw
them to the unit and the
product but unless the stand
is interactive there is no point
in making it work well as
there is nothing to make it
work it is just a solid advert
that doesn't move but if it is
interactive then it should be
built well so that if someone
comes up to it and starts
using it incorrectly then they
don't break it which would
cause the unit to be taken
away and either replaced or
repaired which would cause it
to not be doing its job and
potentially losing money.
Although if you spend lots of
time making it work amazingly
well then it probably wont
look as good so all of these
factors should be considered
when you are designing a
P.O.S. Unit. The main purpose
of a P.O.S. Is to attract people
and draw them to it so that
people come and investigate
the product to see it and see
what it does and how well it
does that.
X-Factor
The P.O.S. Unit should be
different as that way it can
help promote the product as
it will become more
memorable and people will
look back when they get
home and think which one did
I like, well the different one
was good as it was different
and unusual. And as this has
stuck in the persons mind
they are more likely to go and
find out more about the
product as they don't
remember the other ones as
there P.O.S. Units and adverts
were boring and not as
interesting. If the P.O.S. Is
interactive it should be done
differently so that people
think about it for a while.
People could also crowd
around it as there could be a
queue to use it and then
people waiting to use it could
be thinking and talking about
it which could attract more
people and then lots of
people could buy the product
which could also make people
think that must be really good
if everyone is buying it and
then the P.O.S. Unit has
become very successful and
worked really well. Even the
way the product is placed in
the P.O.S. Could make it
different enough for it to be
easily remembered and not
forgotten instantly.
12. Initial Specification
• Aesthetics
The aesthetics of the P.O.S. would have more of a rustic feel to it as Mr Natty have created a style that involves old materials like worn old drift
wood. The colours they use are more neutral and give the image of an old newspaper or something that was a classic British style that has been worn
down and has become less classic
• Cost
The cost should be fairly reasonable as the Mr Natty's products aren’t that expensive but they are not cheap so you would have to have a P.O.S. that
looked like it is expensive but it is not actually that expensive.
• Customer
The customer should like and be able to engage with the product and use it for its purpose and not have to spend ages trying to work the product
out and how to use it properly.
• Environment
The P.O.S. should be in quite a few shops which would be shops that sell lots of types of aftershave and grooming products so that if some one goes
into the shop to buy something they see Mr Natty on a stand and they think ooh that looks good I should try some of that. For this to be achieved the
P.O.S. should be in clear sight to catch your attention of the products that people would be going in to buy and draw there attention to the Mr Natty
stand. The P.O.S. should be by the door so that everyone who walks in the shop sees it and cant avoid it.
• Safety
The P.O.S. should be safe to use and assemble as it might need to be assembled on site to save money on transport. To make it safe to use the wood
should be coated instead of left rough as that could give people splinters.
• Size
the P.O.S.s size should be relative to the product or products that it is showcasing so that people don't see it and then have to find the product inside
it and be confused about what is going on and why the P.O.S. Is so big and the product inside is so tiny in comparison.
• Function
The function of the P.O.S. Is to sell the product it is displaying and make people want to buy it. This can be done in a number of ways and giving out
testers or samples is a good way as people get to actually use the product and test it out and discover how it works and the best way to use it.
• Material
The P.O.S. Should be built well out of good materials but within reason as there is no point in making a really expensive P.O.S. For a cheap product as
the P.O.S. Will attract the wrong attention and people who would not like it could be convinced to buy it and the target market will not notice it.
13. Research Plan
Market Research
I am going to go and watch the market first
hand to see how they interact with the product
and what they do with it and how they use it. I
want to learn what the market know about the
product as they might not know what it is in
which case the P.O.S. shouldn’t be misleading
and it should be honest or give people a fair
impression of what the product is. I will speak
to people in the public to see what they think
of the product and the P.O.S. displaying it when
they are using or looking at it. I will do my
research in a shop that has a lot of P.O.S.s that
I can observe and conduct my research in. I
shouldn’t need to know anything before hand
as I will be learning about the market.
Customer Profiling
I am going to see who buys the product as they
would be people that would be most likely to
be the customer I will also observe what the
people look like and what they wear as there
could be a commonality between them. As
they are buying the product they probably
know quite a bit about the product. I shouldn't
need to know much before hand but I do need
to know a good place to find the ideal
customers if I am going to examine them first
hand. I will writer up my results unless there is
a clear way to put them in a chart or graph but
this could be difficult as I am examining people
and everyone is different and unique. I would
like to learn a lot about the target customer
that companies try to get to buy there
products.
Person And Product Interaction
I am going to watch lots of people and see what they do with the product when it is on a stand and if they even
know what it is before hand and if they know what to do with it and how to use it and if they don't I will see if they
learn how to use it and what it is. I could speak to people after they have been looking at the P.O.S. To see what
they thought of it. I will watch and talk to people in a shop that has lots of P.O.S.s. I don't need to know anything
before hand as I am just watching peoples reactions and seeing what they do when they discover the product. I will
have to write up my findings but I will probably need to take some pictures as well as that could be better than
writing everything.
Environmental Snapshot
I want to learn how products are laid out in shops to try to get people to buy them and the most effective way or place to put the
product so that it attracts the most attention and gets lots of people interested in it. I will try to speak to people who put the P.O.S.s
where they are and find out why they did put them where they are. I will go to various shops to conduct my research and find out
about ideal locations for P.O.S.s in shops and where the best spots are. I should not need to know anything before I go out to conduct
my research. I will take pictures and use text to document my findings
Questionnaire
I am going to write a questionnaire and ask people for there answers to the questions. I will do this in and around shops
that have P.O.S.s that have a similar purpose to mine. I would like to learn peoples response to my questions and what
they think would be a good function for a P.O.S. to have. I will speak to people whop look like they are interested in P.O.S.s
in the shop as they might have opinions on how to improve it. I need to know something about P.O.S.s and some good
questions to ask people about P.O.S.s so that I get the most out of peoples responses and I can use the information. The
questionnaire will have multiple choice answers so I can put my results in a graph.
Mood Board
I will look around for pictures or images that relate to the product or the P.O.S. That I am designing and I would like to know more
about the brand before I start so that I know what pictures would be relevant and which ones wouldn't. I will find most of the pictures
on the internet. I will put all the pictures on a page and display them with each other and they should look good together and not too
random as they all should relate to the same brand or product and be fairly similar to each other.
Brand Profiling
I am going to research the company and
there brand and try to find out what they
are exactly like. I will do some research on
the internet and I will also go out and look
at the product in person. I will not need to
know much before I start researching
things on the internet but I will when I go
out to the shops to look and observe so I
will need to do my research online before
I go out. I will try to take pictures of the
product in shops but I will probably write
about the brand and try to describe the
goals they are aiming to achieve and style
that they are trying to get with the brand
and what they want people to think of the
brand as there could be a forgotten
background or past that they could be
trying to remind people of.
First Hand Design Analysis
I will go out and take ten pictures of
different P.O.S. Units and compare them
to find the best features and what I think
that I should use to design mine. I will go
and take pictures in shops and I want to
find out the most successful methods of
designing a P.O.S. Unit as there are
probably lots of bad ones out there. I will
take pictures of all the P.O.S. Units and
annotate the pictures. I will not need to
know much before hand but I will need to
know what a good P.O.S. Unit looks like so
I can observe and analyse the right P.O.S.
Units and not waste my time on some bad
P.O.S. Units.
14. Most of male grooming products are put in three types of container. One is a
tube like a tooth paste tube which is normally used for products that are to do
some thing and not to make you smell good they are usually products such as
toothpaste which is to clean your teeth or something like a skincare product like
an anti wrinkle cream. These products are cosmetic and are supposed to help
you subtly and mask things that you don't want people to see like wrinkles or
spots. There are also cans for things like deodorant or other gasses that are used
as products that are for male grooming products or uses. Another type of
container is ones for aftershave and they are usually made out of glass as then
you can see the liquid inside it and you can do things like frost the glass to make
the bottle look even better. As the bottle is made out of glass there aren't very
many alternatives as it has to be an airtight or water proof material so the liquid
inside doesn't escape or leak out of the container and get everywhere and
causes the product to be wasted and the person who bought it to have wasted
there money on it as it would have been wasted.
Market Research
Not many produces actually come in tins made out of metal like the ones that
the Mr Natty waxes come in. Some hair waxes come in plastic tubs which are like
the metal ones that Mr. Natty products come in but they are cheaper as they are
made out of plastic and not metal so they are cheaper to produce but don't feel
as good as they just look and feel cheap compared to metal. Another benefit of
the metal tin is something small like the fact that the tin is small so it is
advertised as being pocket sized and that you can put the tin in your pocket and
your body heat will warm up the tin and then warm up the wax inside so that it is
warm and easier to use and sculpt a style into your hair. There are lots of
different containers for grooming products and some are more affective than
others but most good ones are unique to the brand and can not be easily mixed
or forgotten as some times the bottle itself is a P.O.S. And the unit just takes
features from the bottle and enhances them to create a greater effect and
makes the product more memorable and unforgettable.
15. Person And Product Interaction
I saw that people didn't really go near and look at products that were in shop
windows. They were only looked at through the window and forgotten when people
went in the shop as they were then distracted by different P.O.S. units and were
then interested in different products. Putting your P.O.S. unit in the shop window
would only be effective if you put more in the shop then which would be more
expensive and take more time to design as if the P.O.S. Unit looks out of place it
wont be effective and it wont attract peoples attention and get them interested in
the product. People also were interested in the smell of the product and wanted to
try it out. Most people didn't use the tester strips they just used the product on
there skin to see what it smelt like so making a unique tester strip was pointless or
wasn't as useful as you would think as only a small proportion of people used them
and the rest just used the product on themselves. Out of the people who used the
tester strips most of them left the strips at the stand instead of taking them away
with them as a reminder of what the product they smelt or tested was. People also
tested or got a feel for the weight of the products container and people tried to lift it
up and hold the bottle in there own hands and see or feel whether they could fit it in
there hand.
They also tried to spray them self with it so if you were going to design a P.O.S. unit
then you should make it so that people can hold the bottle and pick it up instead of
bolting it down to the P.O.S. Unit. P.O.S. units that were in the middle of the shop
and were able to be seen from lots of different angles were also the most effective
as they could be seen from the whole shop and everyone could see them and was
attracted to them. Also as they were visible from lots of different angles that meant
that more people could look and interact with the P.O.S. unit at the same time which
could get more people interested in the product and as there were lots of people
looking at the P.O.S. unit that meant that people were looking at the crowd and
walking over to see more and find out more about the P.O.S. Unit which meant that
as more people looked at it the crowd got bigger and bigger until a point were
people started to try and avoid the crowd as they were overwhelmed or didn't want
to get stuck in a huge crowd. So you have to be careful in the design of a P.O.S. Unit
as if you get it wrong then the unit could be pointless and just a waste of money as if
it doesn't attract people to it then it wouldn't get people to buy the product so it
wouldn't gain the brand any money.
16. Most of the people buying the products were also women so some P.O.S. units were
put close to the ladies section or between the ladies and either the door or the till as
they would have to make the journey between these places and they would then
walk past the units and then think about buying them for there husbands or
boyfriends as there might be an image of a good looking man in the P.O.S. unit and
the women would think what if my husband or boyfriend looked like that and they
would buy the product thinking that it would make there husband or boyfriend more
attractive or appealing. Competitive products weren't usually placed near each other
unless they were on a similar level as then there would be a clear product that was
better than the other so the other one would be forgotten and unnoticed and only
used to make the better one look better which would be useless for the worse brand
as they would have wasted money and people could potentially walk away thinking it
was worse than it is because it was next to a brand that was a lot better and made it
look bad in comparison so it devalued the brand and made it look worse.
I saw that people didn't really go near and look at products that were in shop
windows. They were only looked at through the window and forgotten when people
went in the shop as they were then distracted by different P.O.S. units and were then
interested in different products. Putting your P.O.S. unit in the shop window would
only be effective if you put more in the shop then which would be more expensive
and take more time to design as if the P.O.S. Unit looks out of place it wont be
effective and it wont attract peoples attention and get them interested in the product.
The P.O.S. Units that got the most attention were ones that were in clear view and not
obstructed. People went to see products that were in clear sight and seemed to
choose P.O.S. units that were on there own as they were comparing smells of the
products most of the time and when there were two or more P.O.S. Units next to each
other the smells merged and became unusual and strange which put people of as they
couldn't distinguish the smells and they just got this huge unpleasant waft of merged
fragrances that were overwhelming and of putting as they were not a good
representative of what the product smelt like.

19. Mr Natty has an unusual range of products so it appeals to a small quantity of
people. These people could range in age buy quite a bit as there is an old market
which could be the people who the product was created for and have been using it
for years and because of the fact that Mr Natty has only slightly changed over time
they have stuck to the product and still use it as they don't feel that it has changed to
much and become a completely new brand that has forgotten its past and all of its
roots in order to recreate it self as a new brand that has completely changed and is
nothing like it used to be. It has changed though but not much as it still retains its
originality but has added things to itself to make it more modern and fashionable as
they try to promote there brand as fashionable as they use haircuts and styles that
are very different and unique which are also things that are used in the fashion
industry as that is always changing and creating looks that have never been seen
before and are unusual and have not been done before. This means that the older
buyers have kept with the company and still buy the products as they work and the
brand hasn't changed to dramatically to quickly it has slowly become different until
now it is the brand it is today. The older people who buy the product probably aren't
that old and would be in there sixties at the most.
Customer Profiling
There is still another generation of people who still buy the products and they are
probably quite young and maybe still be teenagers but if they are they will be in
there late teens and be seventeen to nineteen and probably into there early
twenties. These people probably use products like the wax and hair gels to create a
different and unusual style with there hair compared to the older market who
probably use the after shave and shaving oil. The younger market are probably using
the products because of the modern fashionable feel that the brand has gone for
and succeeded in achieving as there are more people who would buy the product
now because of its face lift and that it has revamped its self with a whole new
modern twist but has still kept its past background which some of the younger
generation could understand and respect and that could also be a selling point that
could have helped them to make the decision to buy it over another product on the
shelf as it is different and quirky. The brand also goes on about moustaches and has
a whole range of facial hair grooming products that although the younger market
wouldn't buy or use these products they might like the fact that they are available
and still get sold and like the idea of having facial hair and aspire to people who do
have moustaches as they themselves would like one and the whole brand itself was
practically built around facial hair and moustaches as every one likes them and
would love to have one as people feel like it would give you a higher amount of
importance and that it would make you look better and more sophisticated and that
you would get more respect as people would see you and think that you are a smart
good looking chap.
20. Brand Profiling
Mr Natty is an old brand but it has ever so slightly changed over the years until it has
become the brand it is today. It started out as a barber shop but the creator of the
brand saw an opportunity as he thought that there was a gap in the market as there
were not many good grooming products for men so he decided to seize this
opportunity and fill the gap in the market and create his own range of products that
he was proud to say were made in England. He then tried to keep up with the times
and make the brand more fashionable and appeal to the younger market but he still
kept the original theme and style that made the brand. This was a good move as he
would have gained some customers or buyers by doing this but he wouldn't have
lost his old ones that he had when he made the brand but getting the balance right
between old and new is very difficult but I think that he pulled it of well. There is still
a flaw in the company I think and that is that it isn't available of the shelves in shops
and the only place to buy it is of there website or another website which in theory is
good as it cuts out the middle man but it also makes he product harder to get hold of
and less people would buy it because they either haven't heard of it o they cant be
bothered to go online so they would probably go to a shop and buy a competing
brands product.
Mr Natty has a very niche brand that is very unusual but is very likeable as it stands
for old English quality and style whilst adding in a bit of present fashion which makes
the brand very unique and difficult to copy as there is nothing else like it out there in
the market. The brand is also clearly English as it is constantly showing of
moustaches and facial hair such as the classic handle bar moustache which in itself is
a unique trend in facial hair. Because of its uniqueness there are lots of other
products that have been released as well as male grooming products. The general
attitude of the creator of Mr Natty comes across as though he is a bit strange as he is
constantly creating new words to describe his brand but then again the brand is so
unusual and unordinary that it wouldn't make sense if the creator wasn't anything
but an extraordinary person who wasn't afraid to stand out and think outside of the
box when he decided to create a new brand and range of grooming products for
men that had style attitude and most importantly actually worked well and did what
they said on the tin and didn't lie to you and mislead you into buying something that
didn't work or wasn't really that great. Overall Mr Natty is a great brand that was
made by a great man who saw a chance to make a great brand and he took it and
made the most out of it so that he could do his best to make a product that he could
be proud of and say that he designed and was truly British but was still in the new
age as he merged the classic views and class of England with the new modern age of
England where there are people who aren't afraid to be different and stand out of
the crowd of normal people and be different and express themselves in there own
way and show there true colours.

22. Further specification
• The P.O.S. unit will be at eye level as when I did my research ones at eye level were the most effective and caught the most attention of customers and shoppers.
• The P.O.S. unit will have a flat base so that it can be put on a stand making it eye level if it does not have its own stand so that it could be the most effective that it
can.
• The P.O.S. unit will be fairly big but not to big so that you can hardy see the product inside it.
• The P.O.S. Unit will be the right size to fit on the en of an isle or on its own so that it stands out from other P.O.S. Units.
• The P.O.S. unit will be safe to use and not harm the user if it is interactive or requires the customer to touch it.
• The P.O.S. unit will be sturdy and tough so that if it is an interactive P.O.S. unit it will not get broken easily I will stand the test of time and will do its job for as long
as it needs to before it brakes which means that it should last until a new product is released and it is no longer needed.
• The P.O.S. unit will be made of good quality materials that will not break easily and need to be replaced that often.
• The P.O.S. unit should be in lots of shops that sell male grooming products and similar ones to the ones that Mr Natty make and sell.
• The P.O.S. unit should be eye catching and get peoples attention and draw them to it.
• The P.O.S. units price will be proportional to the product that it is displaying as there is no point in spending a huge amount of money on a P.O.S. unit that is for a
cheap product as it would attract the wrong attention and then the product wouldn't sell as much and if it did it would be bought buy the wrong people who
wouldn't be interested in the product or would not gain the full rewards from the product as if the product was a wrinkle cream then it should be bought buy
people who have wrinkles and want to do something about it.
• The P.O.S. unit will need to be easy to understand if it is interactive so that if people want to use it they can and they wont look at it and be confused and have to
spend ages working out how to use the P.O.S. unit properly before they can find out how to do what they want to do and use it how its supposed to be used.
• The P.O.S. unit will relate to the product and the brand so that it is clearly trying to display a product by Mr Natty and if people don't know what Mr Natty is then
the P.O.S. unit should explain or show what Mr Natty is all about and attract people to the product and convince them to buy it.
• The P.O.S. unit will be relative to the ideal customer and get the right peoples attention as there is no point in getting the wrong peoples attention as they would
not be interested in it and they would be wasting there time and money buy buying it and could discredit the product or the brand.
• The P.O.S. unit will have the brand name and logo on it so that when people see it they instantly know the brand and what the P.O.S. unit is advertising.
• The P.O.S. unit will carry the background of the brand and will not completely forget it so that people get to know a bit of the history of Mr Natty.
• The P.O.S. unit will be easy to understand and not be confusing and leave people wondering how it had anything to do with the product.
• The P.O.S. unit will be easy to read if it has text on it as some peoples eye sight is not very good and they shouldn't have to strain themselves to read it.
• The P.O.S. unit will be effective and everyone who walks in the shop should notice it and then decide to walkover to it if they are interested in it this way it should
grab the most attention and everyone who would be interested in it would go over and find out more about it.

37. Development
There are lots of types of designs or types of moustaches that I can use. I am
going to use the classic handlebar as it is the most fashionable and is used as
the iconic moustache in lots of branding. It is also the moustache that Mr
Natty is fashioning at the moment.
There are also different ways that I could display the moustache on the mirror
I could draw it on or I could ad a moustache with hair on it so that it would
look more realistic and it would give a better impression of what you would
look like with a moustache. I will get a fake moustache which has bristles or
hairs to add the extra feel that you actually have a moustache and so that it
looks more realistic and then people could take a picture and keep that which
would make them remember Mr Natty and the point of sale unit.
I could also add a beard to the
image so that it wouldn’t just be
a moustache it would have
facial hair like a beard to as they
are fashionable as well but I will
keep to the true natty style and
just have the handle bar
moustache as they are iconic
moustaches that everyone
thinks of when they hear the
word moustache. As this is the
most loved moustache and you
probably wouldn’t want to take
a picture of yourself with a
moustache that you don’t
actually like.
There are lots of different mirrors that I could
choose from there are classic ones that have the
old frames that look established and old and go
with the Mr natty style and there are modern
mirrors that look good and could be
bringing Mr Natty forward and
making the brand newer and
modern but I will stick to
the original style of mirror
and keep it old fashioned
and with the Mr Natty
Theme as that is relevant
to the brand and the P.O.S.
needs to be relevant to the
Mr Natty brand.
The mirror could
also be in
different shapes
and sizes as I
could have it as
an oval that is
similar to mirrors
that you would put
above a shelf or table
top or I could use a mirror that is full size and
you can see your whole body in it. Even if I
make the mirror full size there are different
shapes I could have such as a rectangle or a
circle but I think that the rectangle would be a
good option as it is iconic and everyone has
seen one of these mirrors at some point in
there life. I could use a big rectangular mirror
and have it free standing or I could put a half
sized one on an easel which would be better
than a regular stand as it would look better and
attract more attention and gather a crowd.
38. The domes on the top and the bottom of the barbers pole could be made of
various different materials but I would like to give it a shiny chrome finish
even if it made from a hollow plastic mould that has been coated or wrapped
in a chrome style so that it is made out of plastic and is therefore cheap but it
has the look and feel of a shiny chrome metal.
The domes could be made of actual metal as well which
would give the actual feel of the chrome because it is
real but it could be unnecessary as the same
look could be done for a cheaper price.
There are also products that could substitute
the wrapping as I could use a spray that would
also give the effect that it was a chrome object
but I could ad more layers of paint to increase the effect of the
chrome. I will either get a metal and get the real chrome effect
properly and actually get the metal to be chrome or I will get a
cheaper material and paint it as it would be difficult to vinyl wrap a
dome as the wrap is a sheet and it would need to be stretched a lot
to fit the shape of the dome and then it could be distorted uneven
or the wrap could break and tear which would be a waste of
resources which would not be good if this part would needed to be
manufactured on a much bigger scale and if there is
wastage that means money is being wasted as well
as resources.
Development
There are lots of different ways I could have the
corners of the mirrors as I could have them kept
to the classic style with the brass or wooden
frame which is the classic design. I could also
use a more modern design which would be the
same type of joint but the frame would be
made of metal or painted or sprayed to look
newer and shiny. If I am going to try and keep
the mirror looking new and
modern I could also just have
the mirror as a sheet and then
have corner covers over it to
protect the corners and it will
also keep the rustic feel by
having the corners covered but
will also have a modern twist
to it. The mirror should
match the current
style of Mr Natty
which isn't very
modern and it has
still kept with the
original classic old
style.
39. Development
The barber pole could be made of different materials
as original barber poles have red and white stripes
but I want the product to be inside the barber pole
so you can see it which would mean that you would
have to make the pole translucent or clear which
could take away the effect of the barber pole as the
red and white stand for blood and bandages as it
represents barbers history. I could also make the
pole a solid red and have stripes with no colour in
between them so you could look at it through slits
but then this would have less of an effect of being a
barbers pole as there is the red but not the white. I will probably keep the
original theme of the barber pole and keep the red and white stripes but I will
make them more translucent so that you can distinctly tell that it’s a barbers
pole but you can also see the product inside it so it still does what I want it to
do as the other ways are not as good or are not as
good as they could be as they substitute
one thing for another as one has a
clear tube which means you can see
the product but it looks nothing like
a barbers pole. Another one is better
as it has the red stripes but it doesn’t
have the white stripes and you can barely
see the product as it can only be seen in
bands or stripes. So I think that keeping the
original colours of the pole is a good idea and
making the tube translucent so you can see
through the pole and still see the different colours.
There are lots of different types of
joints I can use to make the corners
of the mirror and attach the planks to
each other. I could use something like
a finger joint or something as basic as
a but joint. I will use neither of these
as the finger joint is to advanced and
it would not be worth the hassle as it
would not be noticed much but a but
joint is a bit to basic and it will not
look like a real old classic mirror so I
will probably settle for a mitre joint
or something of that nature as that is
one of the common joints used in
mirror making. I will put dowels or
wedges into the joint to reinforce the
joint as well just to add the extra
security as it is a big part of the P.O.S.
40. Development
There are not that many ways
to construct the domes for
either end of the barber pole
as if I decide to not use metal
and use plastic or another
material instead of metal and
spray paint it to look like it is
chrome then the easiest
option is to get a sheet of
plastic and vacuum form it into
a dome and attach a circle to
the bottom of it to complete
the dome and seal the whole unit in and then spray over the top with the
chrome spray so you would never know that it wasn't actually made out of
metal and wasn't chrome as some materials or products that you buy can be
quite convincing and look a lot like the real thing and in some cases can be
better then the real thing as you could fill the paint with chemicals to
enhance the paint and make it resistant to things that the metal would be
vulnerable to. Although I could do it the proper way and use real metal and
get it to look like chrome but this would be more time consuming and could
cost more in resources and money but the outcome would be great if you
were to stick to it and get the final product looking polished and as good as it
should look. I will use a plastic dome and coat it
In a material to make it look like it is made of
metal instead of using the real thing as it is
only a cheap unit that will be used in
shops and it doesn't need lots of money
And time spent on it.
There are different ways I could construct the pole so that I could get the
product that is required to be displayed in and out of the P.O.S. as I could
have it in a similar style to a jam jar in which there is a thread on the top of
the tube and the bottom of the upper dome and they screw together and
apart so that the product can be slipped in and out of the barbers pole or if
the product falls over then someone can access it and put it the right way up
and they can do it easily with little hassle other wise they would need to shake
the P.O.S. to try and get the product to stand
back up and there would be a lot of people
who would get frustrated with it and either
not bother standing the product back up or
tucking the whole P.O.S. out of the way
where it would be useless and unwanted.
Another option is to have an access panel at
the back of the tube but this could effect the
aesthetics of the P.O.S. as if the tube is
translucent then you would be able to see
the access hatch and it would make the pole
not look as good
as it would
originally and
then the pole
could look
cluttered and
untidy and it
could effect the
simplicity of the
design.
41. Development
Some of the different ways of
supporting the mirror are better the
others as I could have the stand similar
to that of a picture frame and have a
thing that swings out from the back
and you can lean it on the floor as the
picture frame is attached by a hinge to
the stand and this is good as it is
subtle, unobvious and easy to set up.
This would be good as you don't want
to spend ages setting something up
and it not being as easy as it should be.
Another way to do it is to have a
separate stand and sit the mirror on
that for example you could use and
easel and put the mirror on that as
the easel is iconic and looks great but
it isn't really in keeping with Mr
Nattys style as Mr Natty is rustic and
traditional and British whereas the
easel is traditional but it portrays the
story of a French artist more than a
British barbers shop. And that could
confuse customers or give them the
wrong impression of the brand and
what the brand is about. So I will
make a wooden stand similar to the
one on the picture frame.
There are different ways I can
make the plastic tube for the
barbers pole I could get the tube
pr moulded into a tube or I could
use other methods to make a
sheet of plastic into a cylinder
which could be by heating and
moulding it and that can be done
on two different machines a line
bender and a heat bender the
heat bender would be more use
full as a line bender would be used mainly if you only want to bend the sheet
in one place to make it have an angle in it and it would be difficult to heat the
whole thing and mould the whole thing with a strip heater
as it isn't what it is designed for whereas I could also use
a heat gun and heat up the whole thing and wrap it
around a cylinder mould that could be made of wood
or another cheap material and then let the plastic cool
and set to the shape of the mould which would be a lot
less hassle and a lot less time consuming.
42. If the moustache on the mirror is in a
fixed position I might need a step or a
small ladder for people to stand on to
look at the mirror as not everyone is the
same height so if you have a step you
can line yourself up with the mirror and
look properly at the mirror as you might
not be the right height for the
moustache to line up with your face so
the step would give you a better feel for
the moustache. Also standing on a step
could immerse you into the P.O.S. unit
more as you aren't just looking at it you
are standing on it and using it which
makes the unit a lot more interactive as
you can get to be with the unit better.
There are lots of styles of
stools and steps that
could be used but I
would like the stool to
be made or at least
look like its made
from a solid hard
wood. This way
the stool could input
to the theme of the
barbers shop and
people could enjoy
themselves in it.
Development
When I make the stand for the mirror
I want to use a good joint but not one
that is better then it needs to be as
no one will look at the back so it only
needs to be functional and be strong
enough to hold the mirror up with
out it collapsing. I could then use
something like a but joint but I will
use something better as I don't want
it to be completely stripped back to
basics and
looking terrible
and only
lasting a short
period of time.
I want it to last
as long as it
can and look
as good as it
can without
being a lot of
work to
construct. I
would
probably use
something as
basic as a
dowel joint.
43. Development
The mirrors frame could be
coloured in different ways it
could be varnished to keep
its wood theme or it could
be painted in a variety of
different colours to try to
get the rustic feel that the
brand has and then to get
the mirror and the P.O.S. to
portray the theme of the
brand of Mr Natty. If I paint
the mirror I would paint it
gold or make it look like a
classic brass mirror .
When I put parts of the P.O.S. unit
together that are made of wood I
will reinforce the joints with
dowels and adhesives so that they
are stronger and will last longer
then a regular joint without them.
These joints could be difficult to
make and manufacture but they
will be stronger and will last a lot
more of a longer time and will
increase the strength of the unit as
a whole compared to if I made the
unit without reinforcing the joints
and just screwing or gluing the
panels together as the dowels also
increase the surface area in
contact with the two panels which
means the joint is stronger.
44. Development
The stand for the mirror will be
hinged but it could either swing out
to the side or down and both are
good but I think that I would rather
have the stand swing out to the side
as then it doesn't need to be as big
and it will be easier to construct .
The hinges must be bigger though
but apart from that there isn't much
that is
different
between
the two
types of
Stand for
the mirror
The screws
for the
hinges cant
be that long
as you don't
want them
to go
through
the back
and crack
the mirror
and ruin it.
The Mr Natty logo should at least be put on
the P.O.S. Unit once as otherwise people
wont know what the brand is and what the
P.O.S. Unit is advertising. The logo could be
put on the mirror along with the moustache
so that they are together and if you take a
picture of yourself in the mirror the logo
sneaks its way into the picture as well so
that you don't forget it quickly. Another
place for the logo is on the dome of the
barbers pole but that is kind of tucked out
the way and would ruin the pole as it would
take away the poles classic style so I will put
the logo on the mirror but I will also need to
put it in the right spot so that
it is seen by everyone who
looks at the mirror. So I will
put it in the top left hand
corner of the mirror as the
barber pole is on the right
hand side and adding anything
more would clutter the mirror
in that spot and there is plenty
of space on the rest of the
Mirror for the name to go as
You don't want the mirror to
look cluttered and people
might not even see the name.
45. Development
The moustache and Mr. Natty logo could be
laser cut onto a piece of vinyl and stuck onto
the mirror instead of being painted on as this
would have the same effect but would require
less skill and then would take less time to be
manufactured and produced. If the logo and
moustache are printed then they are going to
be the same every time and none of them are
going to be wrong and need to be done again
and have the whole mirror scraped and have to be remade as the moustache
and logo will be some of the final touches that will come later n the build as
they are small details that are needed but are easy to ad on at the end of the
P.O.S. units manufacturement. I will print the moustache and logo on a piece
of vinyl as it will be the easiest and quickest thing to do.
I could take averages in peoples heights to
determine the best height to have the
moustache on the mirror as then it could be in
roughly the right place for most people and
then only a small proportion of people need to
use the step that is provided. This could be
argued as a waste of time as there is a step
and if your not the right height you can line
yourself up with it so that you are but it is just
a small thing that will make quite a difference
as if you are going to put it some where on the
mirror you might as well put it in the place
where it would be most useful. So that if the
step is missing or there is a queue for it then as
little people as possible will be using or
needing to use the step. This is just a small
piece of research that I can conduct that will
not take long to do as it is just as simple as
recording the heights of lots of different
people and simply dividing the sum of the
results by the number of results so that you
get yourself an average set heights so that you
can position the moustache in the most
appropriate place where it will be most useful
and not have people walk up to it and walk
away because there too small and they don't
want to go through the effort of getting up on
a step just to look at themselves in a mirror.
46. Development
There are should be some text or a slogan which explains the purpose of the
moustache if it is unclear that you are supposed to look at the mirror and
line your face up with the moustache on the mirror. A simple phrase like
“see what you look like with a tach” as I think that a whole block of text
explaining the mirror would be unnecessary and people wouldn’t read it and
Instead of printing the moustache and
logo separately I could print them on a
clear sheet of vinyl as a template which
could cover the whole mirror as then if
it is being mass produced then all of the
moustaches and logos will be in the
same places on all the mirrors which will
help keep the mirrors and the P.O.S.
Units in general looking consistently
good and the same. Another benefit of
doing it like this is that the whole mirror
is covered in a film of protective coating
which means the mirror is scratch
resistant so if it gets knocked about and
roughed up either when its on its way to
the shop or arrived at the shop and
being used by the customer it wont get
scratched and horrible so that you cant
see yourself in the mirror any more it
will stay fresh and new for a lot longer
and if it does turn horrible then you
could easily peel of the vinyl and replace
it with a new one which is a lot cheaper
and easier to replace then doing it to a
whole mirror which wouldn't be able to
be repaired it will probably need to be
replaced which is a lot more expensive.
see what you look
like with a tach
it would cause confusion
as they wouldn’t read it
and it wouldn’t solve the
problem of people not
knowing what to do as
they wouldn't have read
the text so they don’t
know what to do. The
phrase could be
something simple and
catchy like “do you look
good in a tach” or “what
do u look like in a tach.” If
I use a slogan or some
text like this then I think
it would be better then
writing a long piece of
text explaining the mirror
as you can read the
slogan and work it out
from there as it isn't
exactly difficult.
47. Specification Checklist
1. The P.O.S. unit will be at eye level as when I did my research ones at eye level were the most effective and caught the
most attention of customers and shoppers.
2. The P.O.S. unit will have a flat base so that it can be put on a stand making it eye level if it does not have its own stand so
that it could be the most effective that it can.
3. The P.O.S. unit will be fairly big but not to big so that you can hardy see the product inside it.
4. The P.O.S. Unit will be the right size to fit on the end of an isle or on its own so that it stands out from other P.O.S. Units.
5. The P.O.S. unit will be safe to use and not harm the user if it is interactive or requires the customer to touch it.
6. The P.O.S. unit will be sturdy and tough so that if it is an interactive P.O.S. unit it will not get broken easily I will stand the
test of time and will do its job for as long as it needs to before it brakes which means that it should last until a new
product is released and it is no longer needed.
7. The P.O.S. unit will be made of good quality materials that will not break easily and need to be replaced that often.
8. The P.O.S. unit should be in lots of shops that sell male grooming products and similar ones to the ones that Mr Natty
make and sell.
9. The P.O.S. unit should be eye catching and get peoples attention and draw them to it.
10. The P.O.S. units price will be proportional to the product that it is displaying as there is no point in spending a huge
amount of money on a P.O.S. unit that is for a cheap product as it would attract the wrong attention and then the product
wouldn't sell as much and if it did it would be bought buy the wrong people who wouldn't be interested in the product or
would not gain the full rewards from the product as if the product was a wrinkle cream then it should be bought buy
people who have wrinkles and want to do something about it.
11. The P.O.S. unit will need to be easy to understand if it is interactive so that if people want to use it they can and they wont
look at it and be confused and have to spend ages working out how to use the P.O.S. unit properly before they can find
out how to do what they want to do and use it how its supposed to be used.
12. The P.O.S. unit will relate to the product and the brand so that it is clearly trying to display a product by Mr Natty and if
people don't know what Mr Natty is then the P.O.S. unit should explain or show what Mr Natty is all about and attract
people to the product and convince them to buy it.
13. The P.O.S. unit will be relative to the ideal customer and get the right peoples attention as there is no point in getting the
wrong peoples attention as they would not be interested in it and they would be wasting there time and money buy
buying it and could discredit the product or the brand.
14. The P.O.S. unit will have the brand name and logo on it so that when people see it they instantly know the brand and what
the P.O.S. unit is advertising.
15. The P.O.S. unit will carry the background of the brand and will not completely forget it so that people get to know a bit of
the history of Mr Natty.
16. The P.O.S. unit will be easy to understand and not be confusing and leave people wondering how it had anything to do
with the product.
17. The P.O.S. unit will be easy to read if it has text on it as some peoples eye sight is not very good and they shouldn't have to
strain themselves to read it.
18. The P.O.S. unit will be effective and everyone who walks in the shop should notice it and then decide to walkover to it if
they are interested in it this way it should grab the most attention and everyone who would be interested in it would go
over and find out more about it.
1. The P.O.S. unit will be at eye level as it will include a full size mirror that you can
see yourself in.
2. The P.O.S. unit will not have a flat base but it will have a stand attached to the
back of the mirror so that it is freestanding and doesn't need to lean against
anything.
3. The P.O.S. unit will be the same size as a person so that when you look at the
mirror it is a full size mirror that you can look at and see your whole body.
4. The P.O.S. unit will be fairly big as it will be as tall as a person but it could be
bigger so it will be really unmissable.
5. The P.O.S. unit does not require the user to touch it but it will need to be safe to
touch in case someone wants to touch it.
6. The P.O.S. unit will be tough but I haven't shown how I will make the P.O.S. unit
tough and sturdy.
7. I will keep to my specification but I haven't shown what materials I have used or
will need to use to make the P.O.S. unit tough and sturdy.
8. The location of the P.O.S. unit in the shop will be fairly central but it will need to
be refined.
9. The P.O.S. unit will be eye catching and it will grab peoples attention.
10. The P.O.S. unit will be made fairly cheaply and cost efficiently as the product isn't
that expensive.
11. The P.O.S. unit has a moustache on the mirror but it might not be clear why the
moustache is there. So I might need to make it clearer to the user.
12. The P.O.S. unit is very relevant to the brand as it has the logo of Mr Natty all over
it whilst keeping the rustic theme of Mr Natty.
13. The customers will come to the P.O.S. as it is interactive but customers who
might not use the product could be attracted to the P.O.S. unit but they could
recommend the product tor ask people to check out the P.O.S. unit in the shop.
14. The Mr Natty logo is all over the P.O.S. unit so there is no way you can not know
that the unit is advertising Mr Natty.
15. The P.O.S. unit has kept to the theme of Mr Natty and will be using t he complete
theme and will represent the brand fully without causing confusion about the
product or the brand that it is displaying.
16. The P.O.S. unit is easy to operate but if it is your first time you might need a bit of
instruction so a bit of text describing how to do it could be helpful.
17. The P.O.S. unit currently has no text but some may need to be added to help
describe how to properly use the P.O.S. unit.
18. The P.O.S. unit will be big and stand out so that lots of people can see it when
they walk into the shop but the interactivity of the product could attract more
customers than are going to buy the product.
48. Development
For the moustache I could make it removable so that instead of using a
universal height for everyone which could mean that it is the wrong height
for some people I could make it adjustable so that you can change it to your
own personal preference you could make it on a slider that moves up and
down the mirror but this could ruin the look of the mirror as it would have a
runner track on it through the middle of the mirror and that is the place that
you want to be looking at so this could not be the best solution to the
problem.
Another solution is to make the mirror
out of steel or another magnetic metal
so that I could make the moustache a
magnet so that it could be moved all
around the mirror to whatever place the
customer wants it in. I could swap this
arrangement around and have the
mirror as a magnet and just make the
moustache out of metal so that it can
stick to the mirror and it is cheaper to
manufacture as it could get lost or
stolen.
I will make the mirror or the moustache
magnetic so that there isn't a track
ruining the look of the mirror and if the
magnet is in the mirror then the
moustache could be changeable and
there could be a tray of lots of different
styles of moustache that could be taken
out and swapped around on the mirror.
The box for the removable
moustaches could be done in
lots of different ways as I could
attach it to the mirror or I
could make it have its own
stand so that if it breaks it can
be replaced without taking
apart the mirror. The stand
could be made of lots of
different materials or could be built
in lots of different styles. The stand
could be built in a classic way and
would look like a stand for
something that will be used in a
barber shop to hold razors, scissors
and things.
49. Development
I have decided that the P.O.S. Unit will have a thread at the bottom of the
pole so that the lower dome of the pole can easily be unscrewed so that
the product on display can be easily swapped and changed if there is
something wrong with the product inside whether it has fallen over or I it is
just out of date and a new product has been made which will fill its
place. I have chosen to
do it at the bottom and
not the top because
the pole is attached to
the mirror at the top
and it would be very
complicated to do it
there and also even
if I take it of it would
be difficult to put the
product in the pole
and line it up with the
groves inside whilst the
pole is still attached to
the P.O.S. Unit and this
way you can take the
bottom out and put the
product in the dome
lining it up with the
groves and then
screwing it back
together.
I have decided that a chain or restraint will need to be installed to stop the
stand for the mirror falling away and then causing the mirror to collapse
and the stand and mirror to fall away from each other so I can simply
attach a rope or chain between the two which will stop them falling apart
and make the mirror more stable. I have chosen to use either a rope or
chain as they both do
the job and are cheap
and when the two parts
are pushed together
then they don't need to
be taken apart or
removed like an extra
plank of wood would
they will just crumple
out of the way. Which
makes the P.O.S. Unit
easier to transport and
store as it takes up less
space when it is folded
away which could save
you money on
transporting and storing
it. The chain is also a
very cheap solution to
the problem and wont
cost much to install.
50. Development
I am not sure whether to bevel the mirrors
edges as if I do then the mirror would be
more expensive to manufacture and
produce. But if I don't do it then I think that
the mirror will look bland and boring and
wont be as attractive to look at in
comparison to a mirror with a bevelled finish.
I think that if I do stick to
having a bevelled edge it
will be more expensive but
it will look better and look
more like a traditional
mirror and will look like it
was used in a nicer place
with a lot of class instead of
being used anywhere
cheaply for something that
doesn't need to look good
or expensive.
For all of the different
moustaches I could make
a bucket with a stand that
has all of the different
moustaches in it for
people to choose from
and put on the mirror so
they can see what they
look like in lots of
different types of
moustache. I was thinking
of making the bucket out
of metal and having a
brass stand for it so that it
looks classic and old and
not modern and new so
this way it will be in
keeping with the Mr.
Natty brand. There could
be lots of different styles
of moustache in the
bucket for people to
choose from which could
slow the process of people using it down but will make the P.O.S. Unit more
interactive and engaging to the customer so people would be more likely to
but the product after seeing it and using the P.O.S. Unit and experimenting
with the different moustaches on the mirror.
51. Development
The container for the moustaches
could be attached to the mirror
instead of having its own stand
which could make it cheaper and
easier to produce. If I am going to
attach the bucket to the mirror there
are lots of styles that I could make it
in and I think that as I have already
got a barbers pole attached to the
mirror I could make another one but
only have half of one so that there is
no top and I can fill it up with
magnetic moustaches that people
can take out and put on the mirror. I
think that as there is already one on
the mirror then a second one will be
in keeping and not make the mirror
look too cluttered so peoples view
of the mirror is not obstructed.
The back of the mirror will have a magnet sheet on it lining the whole mirror
so that you can place the moustaches anywhere on the mirror without them
falling of as they aren't attracted to the magnet because it is not there. The
sheet will be quite thin as it wont need to be very thick as it only needs to
attract small sheets of metal inside of the moustaches. The sheet can be
held in place to the mirror with screws to the back of the mirror or it can be
sandwiched between in the
mirror between the mirrored
glass its self and the backing
of the mirror so that it will be
untouched and completely
concealed so that it wont get
damaged but it also wont be
seen so if you look at the
mirror from behind it still
retains its classic look and
doesn't look like its not been
modified or tampered with
but that isn't really that
important as it wont really
be seen from behind much
as it will be standing in front
of a wall so its back will only
be seen when it is being
removed or installed in a
shop. So Its looks don't need
to be focused on it only
needs to function correctly.
52. Development
The bottom of the mirror will be sitting on the floor so it will need something
to raise it of the ground so that it will be more stable if the ground is uneven.
Something is also needed because if it dragged across the floor it could get
damaged and scratched as it is dragged across the floor. So I will need to find
a solution to this problem and
the easiest would be to attach
rubber feet that will sit on the
bottom of the mirror elevating
it of the ground. I will use two
small round ones at the bottom
instead of one long strip as I
think the strip will be less stable
and use more material to get
the same effect as the small
round rubber feet which will
also be cheaper to install.
I said before that I was going to print the moustache and Mr Natty logo on
the same sheet of vinyl to make it so that they were easy to put on the mirror
and the vinyl would cover the whole mirror but now that I have made the
moustaches removable and interchangeable there is no need for me to print
a moustache on the vinyl sheet and it would also be confusing if I did as
customers would see the bucket of moustaches but there would already be a
moustache on the mirror which can not be removed so I am only going to
print the logo on the sheet but I will still make the sheet the same size as the
mirror as magnets will be constantly be being put on, pulled of and moved
around so this could scratch the mirror easily and cover the mirror in hair line
scrapes very quickly which would make the P.O.S. Unit look very shabby and
not look like it was built well t a good quality standard that represents the
company and brand of Mr Natty.
53. Development
For the moustaches I was thinking of making them magnetic to make them
stick to the mirror as I think that if you made them sticky like stickers they
wouldn't work and they would loose there stickiness very quickly and
become use less. I would also like them to be fury or made of felt so I was
thinking of doing something that these novelty items have already done but I
would combine them so there is a plastic moustache with a magnet in it and
a felt moustache with some sticky tape on it so I would like to take the felt
moustache and the magnet from the plastic one and combine them so that
the felt one was magnetic and can be taken of an on again a lot of times
without it wearing out and becoming less attracted to the mirror which is
what I think would happen if I used glue or sticky tape which as well as
wearing out will leave glue on the mirror which means that the mirror will
need to be cleaned often on a regular basis other wise the mirror will
become less appealing to look at.
I have decided to change the bucket for the moustaches to be an actual
bucket but I think that an old original metal bucket would be more fitting then
a plastic bucket as the metal one would look better and be more relevant to
Mr. Natty as if it was plastic it would look out of place and wouldn't fit in with
the P.O.S. Unit. I think that if I use a metal bucket it would be more in keeping
with the brand as when you see a metal bucket you think of farms and rustic
places that would need to use a more heavy duty bucket. Although the bucket
makes you think of farms and not barbers I think that it is one of my best
options for a container for the moustaches as it does make you think of
something old and rustic and not modern which is what the whole Mr. Natty
brand is all about.
I will also need to make a stand
for the bucket as I cant just
have it sitting on the floor and
make people bend down to get
things out of it. I will probably
use a stall or a simple hook that
the bucket can hook on to. I
would prefer to make a hook
that screws into a wall and then
the bucket is just hung onto it
as if I did a stall for it then the
P.O.S. Would be more complex
and take up more time and
resources to build but it would
be easier to set up in the shop
by the staff who might not
know how to put it up properly.
54. Development
I would like to keep the container for the moustaches as simple as possible
and I have already decided that I would like to make the container a bucket so
I figured that an easy and simple way to make the stand is to simply have two
buckets and place one upside down on the floor and have one the right way
up on top of that filled with the moustaches as this would look good and also
be simple as I don't want this too be to complex and attract all the attention
away from the actual P.O.S. But I still want it to look good and fit with the Mr.
Natty brand and feel of the P.O.S. Unit. The look of the container is very
important even though it
isn't the main focus of the
P.O.S. Unit and it is just a
container that is going to
sit on the side and not take
up much room. I think that
because it is so simple that
is what makes my idea of
making the stand out of
two buckets so good as it is
not just a plain old stand
that is made out of wood
with a bowl on the top this
idea is relevant to Mr Natty
and even though it isn't
100% related to Mr Natty it
is the best thing that I can
think of to make that will
be easy to build and easy
to set up in the shop.
As I am going to put the two buckets together with there bottoms resting on
each other It would probably be best if I make a small ring or something that
will mean that they connect to each other well and that would make the
whole thing stable as the buckets lips on the bottom would be similar size so
if I just rested them on each other then they would be quite unstable and the
bucket on top could easily fall of the bucket on the bottom and then spill all
of the moustaches every where so If I make a simple disk out of the same
metal as the buckets and make it slightly bigger in diameter then the buckets
base and then give it a lip so
that it is basically a cylinder
with a disk in the middle so
it would sit on the top of
the upside down bucket
with the lip hanging down
and the disk stopping it
falling down then there is a
grove for the top bucket to
sit in and they don't need to
be physically attached all
they need is to sit in the loop
so that the weight of the
buckets will hold them
together to give them that
extra bit of stability that they
need to stop them toppling
over completely and making
a mess all over the shop floor
For people to trip up on.
55. Development
As I am going to use a metal
bucket for the container of
the moustaches I was thinking
about making the inside of
the bucket lined with a
barbers quilt which would be
in keeping with the barbers
feel but still not be to
complicated and expensive to
build. I think that it would be
a good idea to do because it
looks good and will make the
inside of the bucket nicer to
touch when you get the
moustaches out of the bucket.
But I feel that once I start
adding small bits and pieces
to the P.O.S. Unit it will take
away the simplicity of it and
make it more complicated. I
have decided not to use the
quilted lining in the bucket
because I think that it will take
away the simplicity of the
bucket stand that I will make
as it was originally going to
only be two buckets on top of
each other.
I am going to try to make the moustaches that stick to the mirror the tester
strips because everyone who is going to use the P.O.S. Unit will probably pick
up and use the moustaches to choose one to use and get quite involved in
using the P.O.S. Unit so I figured that instead of them picking up a moustache
and putting it on the mirror and then taking it of the mirror just so that they
can put it back in the bucket to pick up the tester strip from somewhere else I
could cut the process down by them taking the moustache of the mirror and
that being the tester strip. This is also a benefit because people are most
likely going to take a moustache and then wont put it back in the bucket
when they are done with it and will
probably take a tester and walk of
with it leaving the P.O.S. Unit untidy
for the next person to use it to tidy
up.
56. Development
I would like to incorporate putting the moustaches on the mirror with part of
setting up the tester strip so in stead of the tester coming pre sprayed or you
picking up a bottle of it and spraying it your self I would like to make it so that
when the tester moustache is put on the mirror the mirror is coated in the
scent which rubs of onto the moustache when the moustache is put on the
mirror so you have to put the tester on the mirror to get the scent on it so
people have to use the P.O.S. Unit to get the tester strip and smell the
I have been thinking about the P.O.S. Unit and that it will be advertising a
moustache wax or some sort of facial hair elixir so the smell of it wont be
that important to the customer as that is not its primary purpose so giving
out testers for people to smell will be pointless the only testers that would be
useful to give out would be small tubs of the product for people to try at
home as it would be difficult if everyone started grooming there facial hair in
the shop and not all the people who use the P.O.S. unit will have facial hair. I
will probably spray the
moustaches in the bucket with
another one of Mr. Nattys
aftershave products so people
can smell something when they
are using the P.O.S. Unit but
there wont be any tester strips
for them to take away and keep
unless they take a moustache
from the stand as the stand isn't
advertising an aftershave its
advertising a cream or wax that
might smell nice put that isn't
what it was primarily designed
for. I am not going to
incorporate tester strips into
the unit because of this which
will save money and time when
I build the P.O.S. Unit.
product. problem with this
as people are going to
mainly use the same spot
on the mirror with a few
expectations of people who
might be a bit taller or
shorter but people will
mainly be using the middle
of the mirror and not the
edges so the mirror could
have all of the scent taken
of it very quickly and it will
need to be topped up again
very quickly which will need
to be done by an employee
of the shop and if this is
needed to be done very
often then employees are
not going to want to spend
most of there day topping
up the P.O.S. Unit.
