What skills do you need as an Accounting student to succeed? We all the know what study skills are available to us but what ones will help you get ahead.

1. What are the seven essential skills you need
to succeed?

2. There are a lot of study skills available to us – speed
reading, note taking, flash cards, group study
sessions and the list continues.

3. But what are the most critical for an accounting
student?

4. Accounting has two sides to it – theory plus all the
practical calculations that are required.

5. To master all the calculations that an accountant can
be faced with there is only one thing that you really
need to do.

6. And that is PRACTICE!

7. My experience has taught me that the students that
practice the most are invariably the ones that
succeed the most.

8. The ones that fail however are ones that didn’t put in
the practice.

9. How does the concert violinist get so good, master
that technique so perfectly?

10. The answer is talent, good teachers, a great
instrument but a lot of practice
.

11. In Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers he says it takes
roughly 10,000 hours of practice to master a skill.

13. A lot of students start out in Accounting having done
Accounting and Business at school and the
temptation is to take it easy that first year.

14. DON’T. You’ll learn things you didn’t realise & start
honing & developing your study skills from the start.

15. Make repetition and practice an essential part of your
study practices and see the results.
