1. A Guide To Downloading Music
If you download a lot of music from Itunes you could end up spending a lot of money.... This may
sound obvious but it's true. I've looked for alternatives for a long time now and have tried most of
the "free" and paid for sites out there. There are pros and cons to both and I will advise you on the
best route to take..
Free download sites are always popping up, and as likely as not, soon taken down. The major issue
for you, the user, it that these free sites often have either very low quality sound or, even worse,
contain a virus. In terms of sound quality, you should always look for a minimum bit rate of 128K,
but you will get the best sound quality from 320k files; the higher the bit rate the better the sound
quality. Free download sites tend to have low quality tracks as they have often been ripped from
youtube or other similar sites.
In terms of picking up a virus, it is very important should you decide to use a free site to a) ensure
your anti-virus is up to date and b) your firewall is on. These should pick up most nasties but be
warned, virus coders are getting smarter and smarter. Think about it, why would someone want to
set up a site just to give away music for free? There is nothing in it for them.... They will ask you to
install a toolbar or change your default search engine. If you've experienced that before you will
know it's not easy to get rid of. There's been several instances where I've spent a couple of hours
trying to get rid of an intrusive tool bar
So, onto paid sites. Yes, there are sites that are cheaper than Itunes. I must admit, my favourite has
to be Iomoio. They've been around since 2007 so have an excellent track record and have a wide
range of music to choose from. Looking at their site today they have a total of over 250,000 albums
by 76,000 artists, with a total of over 2.8 million songs. If you can't find what you want in there
you've got some very strange music tastes!
Some more good news, the tracks are all DRM free, this means that unlike Itunes, where the songs
are locked to one computer, you can put these songs on multiple computers or even share with your
friends; there is no restriction. So if you and a friend want to share the cost of a new collection, go
ahead...
Ass mentioned above, sound quality is important and everything I've ever downloaded from Iomoio
has always been very high quality.
I've saved the best bit to last, the price...Every song at Iomoio is only 16?, a huge saving over Itunes.
In addition to this they have some massive top up bonuses - up to 100%, so that means your
downloads work out at only 8? each!
