Unit 1: Pre-production
Techniques for the Creative
    Media Industries

Task 1: Understand requirements for a
       specific media production
Type of production: Music
             Video
A music video is a short film that is produced
for artists or promotional purposes, it has a
song and a short film to link the video to the
                    lyrics.
Type of production: Music video
Modern music videos are made to
promote the music recordings which will
increase the sale of the song.
Type of production: Music
  Some music video
  videos use a
blend of different
 type of styles,
     such as,
 animation and
   live action.
Type of production: Music
                 video

Many music videos do
 not interpret images
from the lyrics of the
 song, this makes the
  video less literal.
Type of production: Music video

 Other videos can
be a filmed version
 of the artists live
performance of the
        song.
Sources of finance

Funding for a music video is usually made
available by the label if an artist is signed to
that label, however, unsigned artists have to
           find their own funding.
Sources of finance

Crowd funding is a option which is becoming
more popular, this gives the unsigned artists a
chance to develop through live performances.
Sources of finance

  Sometimes, film makers
   and producers having
  access to equipment and
facilities who would like to
  pursue a career in music
   video production may
want to film a music video
for a new upcoming artist.
Sources of finance
The promotion costs for major record labels are about 20% of
the total amount that is invested in each band or artist. Half of
that amount, which is 10% is spent by the independent
labels. This includes music videos, radio and TV promotions,
                 press kits, public relations etc.
Sources of finance

It is estimated that in the UK and US it costs
more than US$1 million to break a pop artist.
Sources of finance
An example breaking down the costs of a
new pop act in major markets is as below:
•Advance: US. $200,000

•Recording: US. $200,000

•3 videos: US. $200,000

•Tour support: US. $100,000

•Promotion/marketing: US. $300,000

TOTAL = US. $1,000,000
Sources of finance

The biggest budget items are marketing and
promotion, which involve a record label
taking an act to the public.
Sources of finance

Labels usually invest a lot in marketing and
promoting artists to a wider audience.
Sources of finance

When promoting artists it builds the brand
identity which they then can earn money from
a number of sources, such as merchandise and
                 live touring.
Sources of finance

    The investment for marketing and
promoting a new act is usually US. $300,000.
Sources of finance

 Funding for a
 video usually
    becomes
available to the
  artist that is
 signed to the
  major label.
Sources of finance

This is the same if the artist is signed to an
         independent record label.

Time: Deadlines
Unit 29 and Unit 1 Deadlines:
Unit 29 Task 1: Friday 21st September
Research into the purpose of music videos
Unit 1 Task 1: Friday 28th September
Researching the context of music videos
Unit 29 Task 2: Friday 5th October
Analysing two music videos in great depth
Unit 1 Task 2:
Research in managing music videos
Unit 29 Task 3: Friday 26th October
Plan for a specific media production
Unit 1 Task 3: Friday 26th October
Research for all planning up to the production
Unit 29 Task 4: Friday 9th November
Shooting and editing the music video into a DVD
Time: Deadlines

I have noticed a few issues with the pre-production and production deadlines.
Firstly, the majority of the deadline dates are close together which doesn’t give us
that much time to meet the deadlines. For instance, unit 29 task 2 is allows me to
get it done within 14 days. Secondly, the pre-production deadlines doesn’t support
the production stages as the deadlines for both units are very close together (e.g.
Unit 29 Task 1 Deadline: 21st Sept, Unit 1 Task 1 Deadline: 28th Sept) this doesn’t
give us much time to work on both in great depth. And finally, the deadlines for
both pre-production and production for task 3 are on the same day.
Time: Availability of equipment
These are the equipment that we have available are:
CANON LEGRIA HF R28
Mac Mini
Imovie
Time: Booking the equipment
The pictures show the process of booking equipment.
If we need to use any equipment we need to sign our initials on the form the
day we need it for (shown in the picture on the right)

It is important and necessary to use the booking sheet to reserve the equipment that is needed on the day and time
that a student needs it for, this will show the other students which equipment is being used that time. The
pictures above shows an example of a booking sheet and how it is laid out.

Costume designers enhance a character’s personality, they add colour,

dangerous, costly and overall impossible to capture on film.

What was the budget for the music video ‘Window
 Licker’?
The video is not listed on Box Office Mojo so I had to research it more.

Therefore, as the length of the song isn’t ordinary compared to others (10:34 full version),
the video effects and production value increase the budget of the video.

I also emailed George Ant about his rates and he responded that he has directed music

• www.fairygodmother.co.uk/ = Prices start at £26.00, but average price is £32-£36 (with
accessories, though boots/shoes are extra)
• www.masqueradecostumes.com/ = adult = range from £25.00 + VAT upwards.
Wig hire = Range from £10.00 - £15.00+VAT Dependant on style of wig
Hats, etc = Range from £5.00 up to £20.00+VAT
Boots & shoes = Range from £10 + VAT Per pair.
• www.escapade.com/ = wigs: £5.99 to £12.99. Average costume hire rate = £23- £35
Materials

The website that can meet my costume requirements most effectively is
www.fairygodmother.co.uk/ because this website has a more of a variety of costumes
and most of the costumes come in sets meaning there is no need for additional costs for
accessories or shoes. My costume requirement would be random and funny, meaning
the costumes do not have to be a specific theme so it wouldn’t be too expensive.
Whereas, the other two websites had a variety also but I found it hard to find good
quality costumes with low costs. In addition to this, I noticed that most costumes do not
include the full package, meaning there will be additional costs for other accessories.
Materials

This is an example of an average costing for a costume on the website I have decided to
use.
Materials

Prop is used by actors that are on stage, or being filmed. For example, an umbrella is a prop. Small props are called

  • 41. Time: Deadlines I have noticed a few issues with the pre-production and production deadlines. Firstly, the majority of the deadline dates are close together which doesn’t give us that much time to meet the deadlines. For instance, unit 29 task 2 is allows me to get it done within 14 days. Secondly, the pre-production deadlines doesn’t support the production stages as the deadlines for both units are very close together (e.g. Unit 29 Task 1 Deadline: 21st Sept, Unit 1 Task 1 Deadline: 28th Sept) this doesn’t give us much time to work on both in great depth. And finally, the deadlines for both pre-production and production for task 3 are on the same day.

  • 48. Personnel: Chris Cunningham The skills and experience the key crew have: Costume designers enhance a character’s personality, they add colour, and even change social status. Visual effects is the image created outside the context of the live action shoot. For example, environments that look realistic, it would be dangerous, costly and overall impossible to capture on film.
  • 49. Personnel: Chris Cunningham Editor is often begun with the authors idea for the work they have in mind. It is the process of preparing and selecting the visual, audible, and the footage used to present information. Editors will need to have creative skills. Therefore, as the length of the song isn’t ordinary compared to others (10:34 full version), the video effects and production value increase the budget of the video.

  • 67. Materials The website that can meet my costume requirements most effectively is www.fairygodmother.co.uk/ because this website has a more of a variety of costumes and most of the costumes come in sets meaning there is no need for additional costs for accessories or shoes. My costume requirement would be random and funny, meaning the costumes do not have to be a specific theme so it wouldn’t be too expensive. Whereas, the other two websites had a variety also but I found it hard to find good quality costumes with low costs. In addition to this, I noticed that most costumes do not include the full package, meaning there will be additional costs for other accessories.
  • 68. Materials This is an example of an average costing for a costume on the website I have decided to use.
