It was established as capital of Spain’s first American colony for the brother of Christopher Colombus. Its period of greatest growth encompasses the last 50 years of the twentieth century and accelerated in 1917 with the construction of the three main roads. El merengue surgió en salones de baile de alta sociedad en el siglo XIX y fue derivado de la contradanza europea. Imitando a la alta sociedad, los campesinos usaron los instrumentos musicales propios de su región para interpretar la música y la bailaban al estilo africano.
