1. For ‘Past’ times –
Count the minutes that have already passed
from the hour (clockwise).
Ex. 10 minutes past 5
20 minutes past 9
quarter past 4
half past 3
2. For ‘To’ times –
We write the hour which is still yet to
come.
We write the minutes by counting
anticlockwise.
Ex. 10 minutes to 5
quarter to 6
20 minutes to 7

2. Digital clocks
5 : 15
3. When using a digital clock we always:
write the hour that has passed
&
the minutes that have passed
Past 3 o’clock – 3 : 00
quarter past 7 – 7 : 15
half past 4 - 4 : 30
To 20 minutes to 5 – 4: 40
quarter to 2 – 1 : 45
10 minutes to 8 – 7: 50
Remember
a.m. = in the morning
p.m. = in the afternoon
Noon = 12 : 00 p.m.
Midnight = 12 : 00 a.m.
