2. When did it happen?
The region’s greatest battle
began on June 6, 1944,
commonly known as D-day,
when 45,000 allied troops
landed on the beaches near
Bayeux. The very hedgerows
that are such a feature of
Normandy countryside were
responsible for making it
difficult for soldiers to fight
during the Battle of Normandy.
3. Where did it happen?
The Allies had to invade France. They made the
Germans think that they would land in Calais, the
French town nearest to England but they attacked the
peninsula of Normandy which the Germans did not
expect because it was rather far from Calais.
4. What happened?
The Allies landed on the
beaches of Normandy. They
also sent thousands of
paratroopers who landed in
parachutes and gliders. The
British forces landed without
too many problems and lost
few men. The Americans had
terrible luck, especially at
Omaha Beach. They lost
thousands of men in the first
day. Many men were killed as
soon as they came out of the
landing craft.
5. Only fine leadership by the
officers saved the
American force on Omaha
Beach and by the end of
the second day, they took
the German bunkers. With
time, the American, British
and Canadian forces
joined together and then
they went on to conquer
Cherbourg, an important
town in Normandy.
6. The Allies had complete control of the air and now
they sent thousands of more men into France. Within
a short time, the Allies, thanks to the Normandy
Landing. captured Paris from the Germans.
Thanks to the success of the Normandy Landing,
World War II ended sooner
7. Who?
The Allies that landed against
the Germans in Normandy
were the Americans, British,
and Canadians. There were
also units of Poles and
Frenchmen who fought in the
Allied armies but were under
American and British
command.
8. Why?
In Europe, Germany was at war
with the Allies. First, Germany
attacked Poland on September
1, 1939. War was declared
three days later. The Iberian
Peninsula was occupied by
Germany and the allies as well
as the Soviet Union on June 22,
1942.
The Soviets became allies of
Great Britain and the United
States after that. The Western
Allies decided to open the
second front by invading
France.
9. How many people
died?
Around 100,000 men died
before the German
opposition fell. Normandy
thus has an abundance of
war memorials, museums
and cemeteries, especially
around the Bayeux area and
the beaches just north of
there.
