2. The tundra is cold just about all year. During the summer
it’s warmer and the sun shines 24 hours a day. The tundra
has been called ‘the land of the midnight sun’. A short
summer lasts 6-10 weeks. In the tundra it never gets
warmer than 45-50 degrees F. The warmer weather causes
permafrost which is ice that never goes in away into the
ground to melt, creating bogs and shallow lakes that never
drain. The wind blows constantly, whipping around the
small plants. During the winter months the sun barely
rises and its dark for most of the day.

3. The winter temperatures don’t reach
above 6.6 degrees. Endless hour
darkness settles in and the winds blow
even harder and stronger. The snow that
falls is blown off the mountains and
collects in the gorge. Animals bear
down, able only able to find enough food
and shelter to keep warm.

5. The tundra is basically located in
the North Pole and is also located
in parts
of, Canada, Finland, Greenland, R
ussia, U.S. and Alaska. The tundra
is separated into two types: Alpine
Tundra and Arctic Tundra.
The Arctic Tundra is located in the
northern hemisphere, surrounding
the North Pole, and continue
south to the coniferous forests of
the Taiga.

7. Caribou Moss grows in
arctic and northern areas
around the world. It grows
on the ground and on rocks
. It looks like a foamy, grey-
green spongy stuff and
grows to 1-4 inches high.
The stems or stocks are
hollow and branch out
many times. Although it is
www.freeimages.co.uk actually called Caribou
k Moss it is actually Lichen.
8. Pasque Flower is a member of the Ranuncluaceae
family which is latin for little frog. The Pasque
Flower has a lot stems that rise 6-8 inches off the
ground. On each stem is one flower with 5-8
petals. The colour in the petals is from dark
lavender to almost white. The centre of the flower
is yellow. Below the flower, around the stem is a
leaf covered in silky hairs, as well as the rest of
the plant. This plant is one of the prettiest plants
in the tundra

10. The Ermine is found all over Canada, Northern USA and
Eurasia. The Ermine lives in northern habitats such as
taigas and tundras. Ermines like to live in marshes, open
spaces and rocky areas next to the woodlands. The ermine
is well adapted to living in this environment. Ermines make
their dens in the roots of the trees in the south. The ermine
is small and weighs around 85.4 grams. The head and body
length can grow from 7-13 inches and the tail can grow up
to 5 inches. In the spring and summer ermines coat is
chocolate brown with a white belly and a black tip on the
tail. Ermines have 34 sharp teeth. It has short legs, long
body and long neck. The head is triangular shaped with
small round ears, bright eyes and long whiskers.

11. The Harlequin Duck gets its name from the look of the male
Harlequin because it looks like the colourful costumes worn by
‘harlequins’, who were people dressed as clowns. The male duck
is dark blue, highlighted in black, outlined white striping and spots
of white. It’s wing tips are brownish black and its wings are
chestnut red. The female duck is not as colourful as the male duck.
It’s not as brown and its marked by 3 pale patches on its face. The
harlequin ducks have a buoyant, firm body with strong webbed
feet, which give the ducks power to swim through tough waters.
They are expert swimmers. When they fly their wings beat rapidly.
The harlequin duck weighs about 1-1.5 pounds and is about 1-1.5
feet long. Its wing span is 2-2.3 feet in width.

14. The tundra is the worlds youngest
biome.
The word tundra comes from the
Finnish word ‘tunturia’ which means a
deserted land.
The tundra is separated into two types
which are the Arctic Tundra and the
Alpine Tundra.
The main seasons for the tundra are
summer and winter
There is barely any food in the
tundra, there are only 1,700 species of
15. The Arctic Tundra is a very windy
place and the winds go reach up to
30-60 miles. (48-97 kilometers) per
hour.
The tundra is known for being the
second most deadliest of all biomes.
The tundra is the most unique of all
