2. Madam CJ Walker was born with the name Sarah Breedlove upon birth in
1867. Shewas born a free black becauseshe was born after the Emancipation
Proclamation was given by PresidentLincoln in 1863. In 1872,her momdied of a
diseasecalled cholera. Her father remarried but died shortly after. At age 7, she
moved in with her sister and her sister`s husband JessePowell. Shortly after she
moved in, shemarried a man named Moses McWilliams to escape Willie`s
mistreatment. Sarah and Moses had one child named A`Leila born in 1885. Shortly
after her birth, Moses passed away in 1887. Shemarried John Davis in 1894 but
left him in 1903 and moved to Denver, Colorado. 3 years after, she married
Charles Joseph Walker and adopted his name becoming Madam CJ Walker. In
1904, Shemoved to St Louis and became a commission agent at the Poro
Company for Annie Turnbo Malone. In 1905, Shemoved back to Denver,
Colorado to develop her own hair care business. Then sheput her daughter in
chargeof her mail operations while she and her husband traveled the United
States expanding her business. Then sheestablished her own hair care system
called the Madam Walker System. Then before her passing, shegaveover $1,000
to the NAACP`s anti-lynching program. Shepassed away in 1919 from
complications of hypertension and heart failure. In her will, she left nearly
$100,000 to schools, orphanages, individuals, nonprofits & much more. After her
death, A`Leila became the president of the company.
