Java 8 is one of the largest upgrades to the popular language and framework in over a decade. This talk will detail several new key features of Java 8 that can help make programs easier to read, write, and maintain. Java 8 comes with many features, especially related to collection libraries. We will cover such new features as Lambda Expressions, the Stream API, enhanced interfaces, and more.

Java 8 is one of the largest upgrades to the popular language and framework in over a decade. In this talk, I will first overview several new, key features of Java 8 that can help make programs easier to read, write, and maintain, especially in regards to collections. These features include Lambda Expressions, the Stream API, and enhanced interfaces, many of which help bridge the gap between functional and imperative programming paradigms and allow for succinct concurrency implementations. Next, I will discuss several open issues related to automatically migrating (refactoring) legacy Java software to use such features correctly, efficiently, and as completely as possible. Solving these problems will help developers to maximally understand and adopt these new features thus improving their software.

Generics are one of the most complex features of Java. They are often poorly understood and lead to confusing errors. Unfortunately, it won’t get easier. Java 10, release planned for 2018, extends Generics. It’s now time to understand generics or risk being left behind. We start by stepping back into the halcyon days of 2004 and explain why generics were introduced in the first place back. We also explain why Java’s implementation is unique compared to similar features in other programming languages. Then we travel to the present to explaining how to make effective use of Generics. We then explore various entertaining code examples and puzzlers of how Generics are used today. Finally, this talk sheds light on the planned changes in Java 10 with practical code examples and related ideas from other programming languages. If you ever wanted to understand the buzz around higher kinded types or declaration site variance now is your chance!

Slides from my talk at Greach 2014: "Groovy is a dynamic language that provides different types of metaprogramming techniques. In this talk we’ll mainly see runtime metaprogramming. I’ll explain Groovy Meta-Object-Protocol (MOP), the metaclass, how to intercept method calls, how to deal with method missing and property missing, the use of mixins and categories. All of these topics will be explained with examples in order to understand them. Also, I’ll talk a little bit about compile-time metaprogramming with AST Transformations. AST Transformations provide a wonderful way of manipulating code at compile time via modifications of the Abstract Syntax Tree. We’ll see a basic but powerful example of what we can do with AST transformations." The code is available at: https://github.com/lmivan/greach2014

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... Java open source developers managed to the see the previously secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the JAVA™ COLLECTIONS FRAMEWORK. Evading the dreaded Imperial Starfleet, a group of freedom fighters investigate common developer errors and bugs to help protect their vital software. In addition, they investigate the performance of the Empire’s most popular weapon: HashMap. With this new found knowledge they strike back! Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, JDuchess races home aboard her JVM, investigating proposed future changes to the Java Collections and other options such as Immutable Persistent Collections which could save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy....

Metaprogramming is the writing of computer programs that write or manipulate other programs (or themselves) as their data. - Wikipedia The Groovy language supports two flavors of metaprogramming: # Runtime metaprogramming, and # Compile-time metaprogramming. The first one allows altering the class model and the behavior of a program at runtime, while the second only occurs at compile-time.

Programming languages are at the core of our profession. But we don't always give them as much credence as they deserve. The strength of Ruby lies in its heritage from a number of different languages, and a look at the history leading up to Ruby might reveal what lies in store for the future. At the moment a lot of attention is spent looking at programming languages and developers are realizing that your language is an important tool. I will talk a little bit about why languages matter, why you should know several, and what the future of languages might look like.

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
