2. Introducing
World University and School
An Open, Free, Online, Wiki
World University and School –
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com
- like Wikipedia with
MIT OpenCourseWare
Scott MacLeod
worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com
3. Degrees - as one wing
WUaS is MIT Open Course Ware-centric
(now in English and 8 other languages)
MIT OCW
http://ocw.mit.edu
MIT OCW Audio and Video Courses
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/audio-video-courses
MIT OCW Translated Courses
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses
4. World University and School is
- planning to offer
the following, online, degrees
- Bachelor, Ph.D., Law, I.B. and M.D., first in English,
then in United Nation’s language,
then in large languages +
- MIT OCW-centric, which is now in English and
8 other languages,
- and is also STEM-centric
5. Autumn 2014
WUaS is seeking students for our first, online
matriculating, undergraduate class, in English,
based on MIT OCW,
(not endorsed by MIT)
where students would take 32 courses
over 4 years, for free, bachelor’s degrees.
Apply to WUaS as if applying to
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) worlduniversityandschool@gmail.com
6. Admissions at WUaS
Admissions at WUaS
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Admissions_
at_World_University_and_School
- Apply to WUaS as if applying to MIT
- (We would like our students to up to speed to
be able to transfer into MIT)
- WUaS is moving toward selective admissions,
but online education is scalable
- Historic application opportunity for students for
free, MIT-centric education, in early years
7. Ph.D., Law, I.B. & M.D. degrees
first in English, where students would take
MIT OCW courses for grades.
Bachelor – 2014
Ph.D. – 2015
International Baccalaureate-high school (2015?)
Law – 2016
M.D. - 2017 ,
then degrees in
United Nations’ languages, and, for ex. Hindi,
after 2015
8. Creative Commons’ Licensing
WUaS is Creative Commons’ Licensed.
C.C. is a new form of licensing and law
emerging in the Information Age
for legal sharing of online resources.
MIT OCW and Wikipedia are also
Creative Commons’ Licensed (C.C.),
in contrast, for example, to
edX and Coursera, two, other, online educational
projects, which are not.
9. Accreditation
WUaS is planning to accredit first with
- BPPE in the state of California
(Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education),
and concurrently with
- WASC senior
(Western Association of Schools and Colleges)
which also accredits Stanford and UC Berkeley
and about 160 other western US colleges and
universities, some internationally.
WUaS plans to accredit internationally later.
10. Wiki - as the other wing
WUaS is open and editable, like Wikipedia
(now in 287 languages).
YOU can begin a new subject page, for ex., or
Teach what you’d like to your web cam,
Youtube channel or otherwise teach to the web.
Post what or when you're teaching
to a World University and School
Subject page, and eventually in any language http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Subjects
11. All languages, All Countries
WUaS is planning to be in all
7,105 languages (per “The Ethnologue”)
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Languages
And in all 242 countries
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Nation_Stat
es
So, WUaS is open and editable as a wiki
(Wikipedia is in 287 languages, by comparison)
and each a MIT OCW-centric university or
school
12. MIT OpenCourseWare
2,150 courses for free in English
Creative Commons’ licensed for sharing
Many courses are already translated into at least
8 non-English languages
I’ve met with in person twice (2012 & 2013)
with Steve Carson,
MIT OCW External Relation’s Director,
And there’s also a beautiful synergy
between MIT OCW and WUaS
13. MIT OCW Sloan School of Management
For example, here are the MIT OCW Sloan
School of Management’s courses, for free –
http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/sloan-school-ofmanagement
-both undergraduate and graduate courses,
-and Creative Commons’ licensed for sharing, - and so free.
And here’s WUaS’s ‘Business Management,’
wiki, Subject page –
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Business_M
anagement
14. Wikipedia and Wikidata
Wikipedia is in 287 languages, with millions of
articles, which we all wrote,
thanks to Wiki technologies, and
Wikipedia just developed and deployed the new,
C.C., inter-lingual, WIKIDATA database,
in which WUAS plans to develop.
(Again, Wikipedia is Creative Commons’ licensed).
Wikidata makes possible an all language,
grass-roots, people-to-people, open, online
learning conversation.
15. India and WUaS
For example,
India - http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/India
- Hindi language

21. Creativity in Teaching & Learning
You can teach creatively –
add your lesson, course or any class to WUaS
here now.
Take any course or class you want,
and talk about ideas ~
WUaS is about conversation as learning,
in Wiki, with a MIT OCW academic standard.
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com
22. Creative Potential & Openness
Media Lab at WUaS –
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Media_Lab_
at_World_University_and_School
( and a course on 'Beings Enjoying Life’?
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Beings_Enjoying_Life ?)
Teach what you want in the way you'd like to,
both openly and academically, too.
Add great articles, courses, instruction you find
on the web, as well.
23. Interactivity in Learning
For both degree and wiki WUaS wings,
Teaching and learning interactivity takes place
for ex., in Google + group video Hangouts
and in virtual worlds like Second Life & OpenSim
MIT Faculty in video, with graduate student
instructors in Google + Hangouts for the
Conference Method of Teaching and Learning
http://worlduniversity.wikia.com/wiki/Conference_Method_of_Teaching_and_Learning
24. Google + group video Hangout
Examples of Google + Hangouts

25. WUaS – Great University-centric
In addition to MIT OpenCourseWare-centricity
WUaS will wiki add great universities’ open and
C.C. educational resources
e.g. Stanford Engineering Everywhere
WUaS seeks to become the MIT, Harvard, Yale,
Princeton, Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, etc.,
of the Internet
26. WUaS – Flourishing Learning
How to generate a flourishing conversation
in learning and teaching for everyone?
- Seeking best & overachieving students
(those who might otherwise apply to & get
into MIT, HYP, Stanford, Oxbridge)
- MIT-centricity particularly STEM-wise
- Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics
27. WUaS is for All & Tech. Reqs.
especially in the DEVELOPING WORLD,
beginning with
One Laptop per Child (OLPC) countries
- For free degrees, matriculated, undergraduate
students will need reliable, broadband video
access for 4 years.
- Begin an undergraduate, first semester on a
smartphone, if needed
28. WUaS for Knowledge Generation
Since knowledge production is central to the
Information Technology revolution
- WUaS brings together students with MIT
OCW-centric classes for knowledge
generation
- World Univ. & Sch. makes it easy for us to
teach and generate the knowledge we
need.
- People-to-people Teaching and Learning in
new, online Networks, in all languages
29. Cost Analysis
The financial advantages for the computer
end user in WUaS is that it's free.
It's people-to-people teaching and learning.
It's thus competitive, yet complements the
vast educational opportunities around the
world.
WUaS won't replace them, just complement
them.
30. Cost Analysis (cont.)
WUaS focuses on:
Group Knowledge Production
Freeware & Open source educational resources
e.g. MIT Open Course Ware
e.g. Great universities OER
• the quality and price compared with any
competition are unmatchable.
31. WUaS and Illiteracy
•
For example, an ILLITERATE farmer in India
could teach a farming practice to their
handheld using icons – especially on the wiki
side - upload it to a video site, such as
Youtube, link it to WUaS, and someone 100
kilometers away could access it and/or reply.
32. Resources into the Future
- World University & School will potentially
create an ARCHIVE of Teaching & Learning
opportunities and resources that reaches
hundreds of years into the future.
33. World Univ. & Sch.'s Structure
•
Series of links organized around a wiki
•
It’s a platform
•
Following wiki pages and main pages
•
Infinitely extensible as a wiki (editable web
pages) – both pages and sections
