Welcome to the Food and Wine from Spain Tasting in Galway.
Wines from Spain celebrates its 10th anniversary Fair in 2013. This regional fair in Galway is a
fantastic way to start this unique year that will also include the promotion of Rías Baixas wines
and many other surprises.
Ten years ago, a tiny Wines from Spain Trade Fair was held at the Westbury in September 2003.
The number of importers attending was also small. Since then, the Wines from Spain Trade Fair
has grown attracting over 200 professionals in Dublin every year. Nowadays we can be proud of
collaborating with over twenty Irish importers to bring you the best selection of Spanish wines in
this country. It is a successful story shared by the Embassy of Spain, Wines from Spain and the
Irish trade.
Ten years ago, Spain accounted only for the 5.5% of the total wine market in Ireland. Despite the
current outlook, the latest figures (Jan.- Nov. 2012) show that Spanish wines take a stake of 13.5%
of the Irish wine market.
I would like to thank all the Irish trade and Spanish wineries that have participated with Wines from
Spain during all these years. This could not have happened without their enthusiasm and support
during this time. And I would also like to encourage you to keep on looking for new opportunities
of mutual collaboration.
Finally, let me also remind you that Spain is only 2 hours away by plane. From the green Galicia to
the sunny Valencia, our wine regions offer a unique number of grapes, landscapes and modern
and classic wine styles. It has never been so easy to enjoy and learn about wines in its element.
