This is one of those passages where the context is larger than the text ... so we'll be spending more time on the contemporary and then the Biblicalcontext than we spend on the text, which by the time we get to it should by then snap more readily into place.
Why do you THINK this all needed saying at Colossae?Economy fallen apart.Employment situation completely wrecked.Social and economic dislocation and deprivation on a colossal scale. Can’t you hear in the background there wives despising husbands because of their lost earning potential, the dashing of their material hopes and aspirations and children learning the same sort of attitude from their frustrated and disappointed mothers?I can. Can’t you see husbands exasperated at their situation – and at the challenging behaviour of their disillusioned wives – making defensive, over strong reactions and becoming short tempered, hardened and harsh?I can.And can’t you see all that being taken out on wives and children instead of calling families back to Biblical patterns of aspiration, Biblical patterns of response to the other members of the household and respect for God’s ordering of family and society?
This is not about their gender but their covenant relationship with their husbands … submit each to their OWN husbandNow that word ὑποτάσσω
