WKU IT Department Relaunches Anti-Piracy Efforts
The WKU IT Department announced today that they are relaunching their efforts to
combat the illegal downloading and sharing of music files today. The campaign will target illegal
student behavior on the campus network.
The public relations campaign will focus on reminding students that their actions are not
a victimless crime, piracy is becoming less popular and therefore easier to stop, and that there are
other ways to listen to music freely.
“We want students to know the seriousness of their actions and to learn that there are
many other options available for music sharing that are not illegal. We hop to create a safer,
more informed campus,” Vice President for Information Technology Robert Owen said.
The IT Department has previously worked to discourage illegal activity by monitoring
student behavior and issuing punishments for activity. While this method stopped some students
from downloading and sharing, the Department is still seeking to lower the number of students
who participate in this illegal behavior.
Western Kentucky University is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Western is
dedicated to being a leading American university with international reach. The IT Department
works to support Western students in their academic pursuits by providing technical support and
assistance.
