Q – Can we REMEMBER how convectional rain is formed. Discuss with your
table!
EXT – Why do you think the weather is different across the UK ?
WALT: Understand the factors affect the weather in the UK?
WILFS.
L4 – Describe the factors that affect the weather.
L5 – Explain why the weather is different across the UK.
L6 – Compare the weather across the UK and explain the differences.
British climate
Britain has a mild climate.
It is in the temperate climatic
zone and the sea affects the
weather.
In general, this means that
Britain gets cool, wet
winters and warm, wet
summers.
The weather conditions are
also very changeable.
Year Sevens
• You have 5 tasks to complete on the
Worksheet.
• Each Table contains information that will
help you.
• You have 5 minutes per a table…
• Only move when Mr Watkins tell you too…
TASK: Label your wind… Use the posh
words if you can remember them.
Complete the fill in the gaps
exercise as well.
Prevailing winds is the winds
direction in an area.
The temperature of the wind and
the amount of rainfall partly
depend on where the air has come
from.
Looking at where the air has come
from helps to explain the weather.
A large body of air with similar
characteristics is called an air mass.
Winds that affect the British Isles:
Prevailing Winds
TASK: Answer the Question on
your worksheet.
Places that are further north receive
less concentrated energy from the
Sun.
The equator lies directly underneath
the Sun and so countries that fall on
the equator receive the most amount
of sun.
This means that in the Northern
Hemisphere, the Sun’s energy
becomes less concentrated and
therefore the temperatures become
cooler as you travel north.
Latitude UK
Africa
Edinburgh
Cornwall
Altitude
• Temperatures decrease
with height. The air is less
dense and cannot be
heated so easily.
• Locations at a higher
altitude have colder
temperatures.
Temperature usually
decreases by 1°C for every
100 metres in altitude
TASK: Draw an image to remind
you of altitude. Remember it only
has to be small !
TASK: Colour the image to show areas that would be warmer and colder !
Extension – What's the difference between winter and summer at the
coast?
Coastal areas are most affected by
the sea.
The sea takes longer to heat up and
cool down than land.
So in the winter the sea keeps
coastal areas warm and in summer,
it cools them down.
Distance from the Sea
Ocean Currents
The effect that ocean
currents have on the
temperature depends
on whether the ocean
current is hot or cold.
Britain’s mild climate is
partly due to the Gulf
Stream, a large Atlantic
Ocean current of warm
water from the Gulf of
Mexico.
TASK: Create your own map of the Ocean Current –
Extension – Why does Britain have a mild climate?
TASK
• You have a choice of tasks.
Write a quick advert for a holiday brochure. Tell the customer about
the weather in Cornwall (in the South East, during the Summer), it is
nice and hot and there is not a lot of rain. Tell me about the Latitude!
OR
Explain why there is a difference of climate;
- In the South of England to the North of England.
- Why do mountainous areas of England experience colder
weather?
- Why does the coast have a breeze in the Summer?
- What is an air mass ?
