472 Days Captive of Abu Sayyaf - The Survival of Australian Warren Rodwell
Cambridge Scholars Publishing - United Kingdom January 1, 2015
Authors: Dr. Bob East, Warren Rodwell
In December 2011, the Australian world traveller, ex-member of the Australian Regular Army and university
teacher Warren Richard Rodwell was kidnapped for ransom in the Mindanao region of the southern
Philippines by a group of criminals claiming to be members of the notorious terrorist/insurgent organisation
the Abu Sayyaf Group. This particular group had loose ties with other insurgent groups that were indulging
in similar criminal activity in the greater Sulu Archipelago area including the Zamboanga peninsular –
where Rodwell was abducted. Rodwell was kept prisoner for a total of 472 days making him the longest held
Australian captive outside of official Prisoners-of-War (POWs). During his 472 days of captivity he was
moved between various jungle hideouts in the Islands of Basilan and Tawi-Tawi, eventually being freed by
Page2
his captors only a few kilometres from where he was originally kidnapped. His tale of survival is made all
the more remarkable considering he endured an untreated gunshot wound and an almost starvation diet –
losing over one third of his body weight – and was forced to walk and climb in oppressive heat and under
constant threat of being beheaded. When he was finally released in March 2013 he was emaciated, physically
and emotionally at the lowest point in his life, and totally bewildered. During his period of obligatory
debriefing by both Philippine and Australian authorities, an amazing tale of survival unfolded. Rodwell’s
determination to overcome all obstacles in his path to eventual freedom is the quintessence of all that is dear
in life – life itself.

FOREWORD: The tide of human events is unforgiving. Individuals can get swept up in events beyond
their comprehension, paying a heavy price as a consequence. Australian kidnap victim Warren Rodwell
was just such a person, as this intriguing study by Dr Bob East makes abundantly clear. Rodwell was in
the wrong place at the wrong time. His story is a fascinating blend of the personal and the political which
can serve as a salutary warning to all. In the end, some people simply run out of luck. Rodwell survived his
twist of fate, fortunately, and here he is able to recount his story with the aid of a shrewd biographer who has
been studying the law and order situation in the southern Philippines for some time. A remarkable account
emerges of courage in the face of malevolence and cruelty. Hope and despair, along with the gamut of
human emotions, play out in these pages in a way that should give any traveller, armchair or otherwise, cause
for reflection – and reason enough to arrange holiday insurance before leaving home! Being kidnapped is a
fate that can befall anyone, of course. Any person can be taken against their will, anywhere and at any time.
With the rise of home invasions in developed countries, the wealthiest people can be held hostage right in
their own domain. Hollywood has explored some of the darkest scenarios to create a genre of hair-raising
kidnap movies, but there isn’t always a Liam Neeson or Mel Gibson around to help out. Being seized against
one’s will is usually a very lonely affair indeed. [cont'd] @ https://warrenrodwell.shutterfly.com/2925 Dr

GOVERNMENT WON'T COMPENSATE KIDNAPPED AUSTRALIAN AS INCIDENT WASN'T
OFFICIALLY A 'TERROR EVENT'
DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA / UNITED KINGDOM April 6, 2015
Authors: Warren Rodwell, Daniel Piotrowski
Warren Rodwell was held hostage for 472 days and feared his Abu Sayyaf captors would behead him. He
was freed in March 2013 after his family successfully managed to raise a ransom. Now he fears he will
not receive Victims of Terrorism Overseas compensation. Unless Prime Minister Tony Abbott decides
otherwise, his kidnapping is not listed as a 'declared terrorist event'. ASIO has officially declared Abu Sayyaf
as a terrorist organisation He was held against his will in a foreign jungle for 472 days and feared his al-
Qaeda linked captors would behead him. Under Australian law, the survivors and families of victims of
overseas attacks can claim up to $75,000 in compensation. But for that to happen, Prime Minister Tony
Abbott would have to declare his kidnapping a terrorist event. Despite an official from the Attorney-
General's Department (AGD) lauding his courage and referring a petition from him to Mr Abbott's office,
the kidnapping victim is sceptical it will see action. The AGD did not place any timeframe on when he
should expect Mr Abbott to decide on his case. 'The prime minister has no time for doing things like this,'
Mr Rodwell told Daily Mail Australia - who attributed part of his situation to his low public profile. A
government media blackout was enforced during his captivity. The kidnapping victim said he was a 'little
bitter' this year that other Australians trapped overseas have obtained considerable attention, including
Kalynda Davis, the Bali Nine drug smugglers and journalist Peter Greste. 'I got no attention because I wasn't
Page4
female and I wasn't a convicted drug smuggler and I wasn't a recognised person in society - just one of these
ordinary people.' ASIO has officially declared Abu Sayyaf as a terrorist organisation. Mr Rodwell is hoping
to use any compensation to pay back his brother and sister, who helped arrange the ransom payment that
saved him.

WHY DON'T YOU F*****G KILL ME?!
DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA / UNITED KINGDOM August 12, 2014
Authors: Daniel Piotrowski, Warren Rodwell
'Why don't you f*****g kill me?! You p***ks don't know what you're doing!' Kidnapped Australian held
hostage for more than a year tells of his harrowing ordeal • Forthcoming book reveals new details about
kidnapped Australian Warren Rodwell's 15 month ordeal as a captive of terror group • In an interview
before the book's release, Mr Rodwell describes the incompetence of his Abu Sayyaf guards • 'Why don't
you f---en' kill me? You pricks don't know what you're doing!' • Mr Rodwell has been recovering in Brisbane
since his release in March 2013 They held him hostage in the Philippines for 472 days... but they were
so incompetent they couldn't read, write or count. An Australian who was held to ransom by terrorists for
15 months has told how he screamed at his bumbling captors for them to kill him after witnessing them
make one of many stupid mistakes. 'Why don't you f...... kill me?' Warren Rodwell, now 56, recalled
screaming at his captors midway through his imprisonment. 'You pricks don't know what you're doing!'
Speaking to Daily Mail Australia before the release of a new book about his experience at the hands of
Abu Sayyaf, an al-Qaeda linked militant group, Mr Rodwell shed new light on the disastrous incompetence
of the mostly young guards who kept him prisoner. In that instance, one of his captors had sat on his
hammock, sending it crashing to the ground. But the terrorist organisation's problems ran far deeper than
that, Mr Rodwell said. 'They were not only illiterate, they were innumerate.''They thought one million pesos
equaled one million dollars, so let's double it (the ransom).' He remembered one of the up to 100 guards
who watched over him was particularly incompetent. 'He was completely empty in his head, he had no
initiative.' 'He climbed trees and made noises like an animal.' [CONTINUED/] Copy and paste link https://

KIDNAP VICTIM WARREN RODWELL BACKS NEWS BLACKOUT ON ISLAMIC STATE
HOSTAGES at Fairfax Media
October 2014 - October 2014 (1 month)
Lindsay Murdoch October 10, 2014 South-East Asia correspondent for Fairfax Media reports ...
__________________________________________________________________________ One of
Australia's longest held kidnap victims has backed the imposition of news blackouts in kidnappings despite
growing calls in Britain and the United States for them to be reviewed. Warren Rodwell, an adventurer and
teacher held for 472 days in the southern Philippines, says news blackouts should be routinely imposed for
Page6
one to three months, including for captives of the Islamic State, which has released videos of the beheadings
of its hostages. "My suggestion is that any situation should (then) be monitored and reviewed accordingly,"
he said. Mr Rodwell also believes authorities dealing with kidnappings should be more "proactive" in
their contact with kidnappers and not simply wait to be contacted. Copy & past link to continue ..., http://

Warren Rodwell tells of how he survived as a hostage in the Philippines. October 10, 2014
_________________________________________________________ BEING kidnapped and taken
hostage is different to just being suddenly ripped from your regular lifestyle, routines and loved ones. Things
happen so fast — in my case, within a few minutes There was no adjustment period, chance to prepare or
opportunity to say goodbye. There was nowhere to run. There was hardly time for the shock to set in. My
mind went blank and my body froze when I was confronted by four men, dressed in jungle greens, pointing
M16 rifles at me. Then a shot was fired and pain pierced my right hand. There was barely enough light to
see the bullet and blood fly from my flesh. I’d never before been shot and was immediately worried about
the permanent physical damage. Copy & paste link to continue ... http://www.linkedin.com/pulse/survival-

"I'm regularly invited to offer expert opinion on any unfolding news story for CH7 Australia and not so long
ago i was asked to comment on Warren's kidnap situation in the Philippines. As soon as i witnessed the gaunt
and frail images of Warren i realised he was in trouble and only someone with a cast iron constitution and
a strong will to live would see the light of day. I commented to presenter David Koche that it was sad to
see Warren in this condition and pushed for this to come to greater attention. I was overjoyed to see Warren
released and back on the road to recovery and wish him every success in the future as my God he deserves it.
No-one can ever imagine what an ordeal he has gone through."
— Tony Loughran, Director, ZeroRisk International, worked directly with Warren at Abu Sayyaf Terrorist
Group - The Philippines
"Warren Rodwell's story is one of modern day survival. Kidnapped by Islamic extremists while living in
the Philippines, Warren survived for 15 months in captivity being moved from location to location. How he
maintained his sanity let alone his life is an incredible feat of courage, guts and determination. Warren's story
proves that where there is life there is definitely hope. A true inspiration."
— David Richardson, Senior Journalist, 7 News Investigations and Features, was with another company
when working with Warren at Abu Sayyaf Terrorist Group - The Philippines
"Warren Rodwell describes himself as an 'adventurer' and he is that, in the true sense of the term. Warren
has extensive experience successfully living outside what might be described as most people's comfort
zones and recently lived in the Zamboanga region of the southern Philippines - a part of the world that
has been notorious for the last couple of decades as 'kidnap central'. That Warren was not kidnapped for
so long is testament to his ability to read his environment but, eventually, he was kidnapped by a group
claiming to be the Abu Sayyef Group (ASG). The ASG is an exceptionally dangerous organisation and
has a history of killing kidnap victims if ransom is not promptly paid. Not only did Warren survive his 15
month kidnap experience, which would undoubtedly have taken considerable judgment and negotiation
skills, he was also released upon payment of around 5% of the original $2 million ransom demand.

a person."

"During the 2008 academic year Warren Rodwell and I taught together in Wuxi. He was an effective teacher,
always well-prepared and in control of his classes. I recommend him highly as a teacher and as a manager."
— Reid Mitchell, English Lecturer, Jiangnan University, worked directly with Warren at Government
Universities - People's Republic of China
"I always found Warren to be a dedicated teacher who really cared about his students and did his best to
inspire them to excellence. He was a steady, reliable colleague who did his work well and had the respect of
the administration and fellow teachers."
— David scott, Teacher, Jiangnan University, worked directly with Warren at Government Universities -

"Warren taught at Government Universities in the People's Republic of China where he proved to be very
competent and a great help to his students."
— James Rankin, Teacher, Various Colleges and Universities, worked directly with Warren at Government
Universities - People's Republic of China
"Warren and I both worked in Education together in Inner Mongolia China, I had the pleasure to meet him
at a student event. Warren has that kind of personality that when you speak with him you don't want that
conversation to end, and beyond his interesting character I must say that he is one of the most professional
people that I have met. Warren is not only a great public speaker but also an amazing person that definitely is
one of a kind."
— David Gulasi, Head Master, New World Language School, worked with Warren at Mainland China
"Warren was a well known member of the foreign community in Chengdu for a numbers of years and was
actively involved in publishing and local media. He was also well connected to,and highly regarded by
officers of the Sichuan Provincial government."
— Dan Garvey, Centre Academic Principal, Kaplan Higher Education, worked with Warren at Sichuan

Warren has also written for and edited hard copy magazines. So far, he has travelled United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Oceania, and South America. From 5th December 2011 until 23rd March 2013, he was kidnapped by Islamic terrorist extremists in the southern Philippines. At 472 days, Warren Rodwell is the longest held Australian captive [for the least amount paid (less than 5% of the original demand)] outside of war time. Mr Rodwell is currently based in Australia. This particular group had loose ties with other insurgent groups that were indulging in similar criminal activity in the greater Sulu Archipelago area including the Zamboanga peninsular – where Rodwell was abducted. Rodwell was kept prisoner for a total of 472 days making him the longest held Australian captive outside of official Prisoners-of-War (POWs). During his 472 days of captivity he was moved between various jungle hideouts in the Islands of Basilan and Tawi-Tawi, eventually being freed by
  • 2. Page2 his captors only a few kilometres from where he was originally kidnapped. His tale of survival is made all the more remarkable considering he endured an untreated gunshot wound and an almost starvation diet – losing over one third of his body weight – and was forced to walk and climb in oppressive heat and under constant threat of being beheaded. When he was finally released in March 2013 he was emaciated, physically and emotionally at the lowest point in his life, and totally bewildered. During his period of obligatory debriefing by both Philippine and Australian authorities, an amazing tale of survival unfolded. Rodwell’s determination to overcome all obstacles in his path to eventual freedom is the quintessence of all that is dear in life – life itself. 472 Days Captive - BOOK FOREWORD by Dr Peter M Sales Honorary Fellow, Faculty of Arts, University of Wollongong NSW Australia January 1, 2015 Authors: Dr Peter Sales, Warren Rodwell 472 Days Captive of Abu Sayyaf - The Survival of Australian Warren Rodwell Biography [ by Dr Bob East ] First published 2015 Cambridge Scholars (CSP) Copy & paste link : http://www.skills.itc.com.au/? letter=S [ for Dr Peter Sales ] _______________________________________________________________ FOREWORD: The tide of human events is unforgiving. Individuals can get swept up in events beyond their comprehension, paying a heavy price as a consequence. Australian kidnap victim Warren Rodwell was just such a person, as this intriguing study by Dr Bob East makes abundantly clear. Rodwell was in the wrong place at the wrong time. His story is a fascinating blend of the personal and the political which can serve as a salutary warning to all. In the end, some people simply run out of luck. Rodwell survived his twist of fate, fortunately, and here he is able to recount his story with the aid of a shrewd biographer who has been studying the law and order situation in the southern Philippines for some time. A remarkable account emerges of courage in the face of malevolence and cruelty. Hope and despair, along with the gamut of human emotions, play out in these pages in a way that should give any traveller, armchair or otherwise, cause for reflection – and reason enough to arrange holiday insurance before leaving home! Being kidnapped is a fate that can befall anyone, of course. Any person can be taken against their will, anywhere and at any time. With the rise of home invasions in developed countries, the wealthiest people can be held hostage right in their own domain. Hollywood has explored some of the darkest scenarios to create a genre of hair-raising kidnap movies, but there isn’t always a Liam Neeson or Mel Gibson around to help out. Being seized against one’s will is usually a very lonely affair indeed. [cont'd] @ https://warrenrodwell.shutterfly.com/2925 Dr Peter M. He was freed in March 2013 after his family successfully managed to raise a ransom. Now he fears he will not receive Victims of Terrorism Overseas compensation. Unless Prime Minister Tony Abbott decides otherwise, his kidnapping is not listed as a 'declared terrorist event'. ASIO has officially declared Abu Sayyaf as a terrorist organisation He was held against his will in a foreign jungle for 472 days and feared his al- Qaeda linked captors would behead him. Under Australian law, the survivors and families of victims of overseas attacks can claim up to $75,000 in compensation. But for that to happen, Prime Minister Tony Abbott would have to declare his kidnapping a terrorist event. Despite an official from the Attorney- General's Department (AGD) lauding his courage and referring a petition from him to Mr Abbott's office, the kidnapping victim is sceptical it will see action. The AGD did not place any timeframe on when he should expect Mr Abbott to decide on his case. 'The prime minister has no time for doing things like this,' Mr Rodwell told Daily Mail Australia - who attributed part of his situation to his low public profile. A government media blackout was enforced during his captivity. The kidnapping victim said he was a 'little bitter' this year that other Australians trapped overseas have obtained considerable attention, including Kalynda Davis, the Bali Nine drug smugglers and journalist Peter Greste. 'I got no attention because I wasn't

DAILY MAIL AUSTRALIA / UNITED KINGDOM August 12, 2014 Authors: Daniel Piotrowski, Warren Rodwell 'Why don't you f*****g kill me?! You p***ks don't know what you're doing!' Kidnapped Australian held hostage for more than a year tells of his harrowing ordeal • Forthcoming book reveals new details about kidnapped Australian Warren Rodwell's 15 month ordeal as a captive of terror group • In an interview before the book's release, Mr Rodwell describes the incompetence of his Abu Sayyaf guards • 'Why don't you f---en' kill me? You pricks don't know what you're doing!' • Mr Rodwell has been recovering in Brisbane since his release in March 2013 They held him hostage in the Philippines for 472 days... but they were so incompetent they couldn't read, write or count. An Australian who was held to ransom by terrorists for 15 months has told how he screamed at his bumbling captors for them to kill him after witnessing them make one of many stupid mistakes. 'Why don't you f...... kill me?' Warren Rodwell, now 56, recalled screaming at his captors midway through his imprisonment. 'You pricks don't know what you're doing!' Speaking to Daily Mail Australia before the release of a new book about his experience at the hands of Abu Sayyaf, an al-Qaeda linked militant group, Mr Rodwell shed new light on the disastrous incompetence of the mostly young guards who kept him prisoner. In that instance, one of his captors had sat on his hammock, sending it crashing to the ground. But the terrorist organisation's problems ran far deeper than that, Mr Rodwell said. 'They were not only illiterate, they were innumerate.''They thought one million pesos equaled one million dollars, so let's double it (the ransom).' He remembered one of the up to 100 guards who watched over him was particularly incompetent. 'He was completely empty in his head, he had no initiative.' 'He climbed trees and made noises like an animal.' Things happen so fast — in my case, within a few minutes There was no adjustment period, chance to prepare or opportunity to say goodbye. There was nowhere to run. There was hardly time for the shock to set in. My mind went blank and my body froze when I was confronted by four men, dressed in jungle greens, pointing M16 rifles at me. Then a shot was fired and pain pierced my right hand. There was barely enough light to see the bullet and blood fly from my flesh. Page12 Warren Rodwell International Adventurer / Speaker woccaadmin@gmail.com 14 people have recommended Warren "I'm regularly invited to offer expert opinion on any unfolding news story for CH7 Australia and not so long ago i was asked to comment on Warren's kidnap situation in the Philippines. As soon as i witnessed the gaunt and frail images of Warren i realised he was in trouble and only someone with a cast iron constitution and a strong will to live would see the light of day. I commented to presenter David Koche that it was sad to see Warren in this condition and pushed for this to come to greater attention. I was overjoyed to see Warren released and back on the road to recovery and wish him every success in the future as my God he deserves it. No-one can ever imagine what an ordeal he has gone through." — Tony Loughran, Director, ZeroRisk International, worked directly with Warren at Abu Sayyaf Terrorist Group - The Philippines "Warren Rodwell's story is one of modern day survival. Kidnapped by Islamic extremists while living in the Philippines, Warren survived for 15 months in captivity being moved from location to location. How he maintained his sanity let alone his life is an incredible feat of courage, guts and determination. Warren's story proves that where there is life there is definitely hope. A true inspiration." — David Richardson, Senior Journalist, 7 News Investigations and Features, was with another company when working with Warren at Abu Sayyaf Terrorist Group - The Philippines "Warren Rodwell describes himself as an 'adventurer' and he is that, in the true sense of the term. Warren has extensive experience successfully living outside what might be described as most people's comfort zones and recently lived in the Zamboanga region of the southern Philippines - a part of the world that has been notorious for the last couple of decades as 'kidnap central'. That Warren was not kidnapped for so long is testament to his ability to read his environment but, eventually, he was kidnapped by a group claiming to be the Abu Sayyef Group (ASG). The ASG is an exceptionally dangerous organisation and has a history of killing kidnap victims if ransom is not promptly paid. Not only did Warren survive his 15 month kidnap experience, which would undoubtedly have taken considerable judgment and negotiation skills, he was also released upon payment of around 5% of the original $2 million ransom demand.
