POSITION: Associate Director, JIBC Indigenization
DIVISION: Office of the Vice President, Academic
REPORTING TO: Michel Tarko, Vice President , Academic
Summary:
Reporting to the Vice President, Academic, this position is responsible for providing leadership in the
development and implementation of a JIBC Indigenization Plan focused on Aboriginal education in order to
ensure that prospective and current Aboriginal students have access to educational experiences at the
JIBC that are relevant and meaningful.
Working closely with staff and faculty and consulting with the Aboriginal Education Advisory Council (AEAC)
and Aboriginal leaders and communities, the incumbent will recommend, implement and coordinate a variety of
initiatives including increasing understanding and awareness, reviewing curriculum and teaching methodology,
reviewing policies and procedures, and advising staff and faculty with respect to best practices in Aboriginal
education. This position is also responsible for the support and maintenance of the JIBC Aboriginal
Educational Advisory Council.
Primary Responsibilities:
Provides leadership to the JIBC in the development and implementation of JIBC Indigenization planning
and ensures the successful implementation of a variety of initiatives. Develops work plans. Consults
internally with senior staff and faculty and externally with the Aboriginal Educational Advisory Council
and Aboriginal community leaders.
Works closely with JIBC staff and faculty and provides ongoing advice and direction with respect to
Aboriginal protocols and practices. Develops and implements activities to promote awareness and
understanding.
Builds on existing relationships with Aboriginal leaders, communities, organizations and agencies.
Identifies and recommends opportunities for strategic alliances throughout the Province and, assists
staff in developing relationships with Aboriginal communities to promote JIBC programs, and with
employers to promote the recruitment of Aboriginal graduates.
Establishes and maintains relationships with other post-secondary institutions involved in Aboriginal
Education, Aboriginal communities and agencies, government ministries, and funding agencies.
Establishes and maintains internal working relationships throughout the JIBC, and acts as a resource in
matters relating to Indigenization, Aboriginal Education, and Aboriginal learners, the development and
delivery of curriculum, and policy and procedures as they relate to Indigenization. Participates in JIBC
committees and task groups.
Manages the Aboriginal Education Advisory Council; schedules regular meetings, ensures membership
is relevant and participatory; follows up on advice and guidance received from the AEAC; and reports to
VP, Academic with respect to activities of the AEAC;
Develops and monitors budget and manages all financial transactions.
Qualifications & Requirements:
A university degree in a relevant social sciences discipline at the masters’ level; or an acceptable equivalent
combination of education, training and experience. A minimum of 5 years relevant experience in the fields of
adult education, curriculum development, and program delivery for a variety of Aboriginal learners and clients,
and project management, with extensive, in-depth knowledge of cultural protocols, history and cultural values
of Aboriginal peoples is required.

Knowledge and understanding regarding Aboriginal post-secondary education and understanding of
specialized methodologies, adaptations, and modifications of programs with Aboriginal content specific to
Aboriginal learning and Aboriginal ways of knowing.
A commitment to collaborative approaches, team work and student success is essential.
Proven experience and success in Aboriginal education administration is essential. Proficiency in Microsoft
Office is required.
Outstanding leadership skills are essential, including the demonstrated ability to build strong internal and
external relationships and work in a team environment, using effective conflict resolution skills. Demonstrated
project management skills are important. Demonstrated ability to exercise judgment, problem solve, and work
with complex issues is essential. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills are required.
Proven time management skills, with ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
The ideal candidate will be an independent self-starter, who has a track record of working cooperatively and
effectively with diverse groups internally and externally.
Demonstrated commitment to excellence in culturally appropriate curriculum development and delivery, the
recruitment, retention and success of Aboriginal learners’, and service to Aboriginal clients and communities is
paramount.
Salary Range: $97,266 - $108,074 per annum (Fair Comparison Pay Grid L5)
(Placement on the range depends on qualifications and experience of the
successful applicant)
