Technologies are proposed by individuals, companies, NGOs, donors and Governments. Such technologies may be genuinely new, or already trialled or used somewhere else. Many hundreds of WASH technologies. Some are very well-established, others less so, and some completely unproven as yet.No systematic and thorough process for assessing such technologies at present.WASHTech’s baseline surveys found that of the three countries we’re focussing on, Ghana did have a process by which the government approved technologies, although it was not formally recorded and often circumvented. Uganda has criteria for technologies to meet but there is no approval process. Burkina Faso has neither standards nor an approval process. This has led to 12 different handpumps being used there!
